Did this game hurt Sonic's brand image? Sonic 3 sold a fraction of Sonic 2's sales
>>
>>12065019
It was the first Sonic game I hated. I've never gotten past the second stage and don't care to. Such an annoying frustrating game

Dost thou, in thy mortal comprehension, derive any semblance of favor or approbation from the perverse spectacle presented before thee, or hath it incurred thy disdain and contempt within the dark recesses of thy malevolent soul?

Was Sonic 3 ever bundled with the console? That might explain why Sonic 1 and 2 have more "sales"
>>
the fact that the original release had a game-breaking bug probably didn't do a lot to help its image.

the revision is still a great game, though.

Can't say but I would put the discrepancy up to other factors. Sonic and Sonic 2 both being pack-in titles that millions got bundled with their console inflates their popularity as many people got it by default. Second is sequel fatigue, the third game usually sells less than the previous 2 even if the prior games were popular. Then there is the nature of Sonic 3's release, people knew they were buying half the game and that the other half would come later thanks to the magic of lock on technology. While that may seem cool and innovative now, it was probably not as fun when you realized you were basically paying $120 for the full game after a six month wait. Finally Sega was pushing its next gen console the Saturn so I am sure many people were saving their pennies for its the 1995 release.

SNES tilt occured

People didn't know Sonic 3 and Knuckles were half-games. Nobody thought of them like that. Not the consumers, not the media. At least do your best to dispense with the ridiculous revisionism. Sega's history is counterintuitive enough as it is.

Sonic 3 was released as a stand alone title. Stop talking rubbish.

the great debate
>>
>>12065293
that's not even fucking fair, spinball is at least fun in an unironic sense.
>>
>>12065293
im ashamed to say im a chief authority on this subject, having beaten both. in the case of mario is missing, both the NES and SNES versions
>>12065180
yes. sonic 3 has a few "not for resale" versions that were system pack-ins
>>12065296
yeah but mario is missing has one of the greatest opening cutscenes of all time

git gud (the fifth/final stage is very frustrating)
>>
>>12065019
Anecdotally I got this game and after that I had no interest in playing Sonic 3. Thankfully my uncle randomly bought me S3 as a gift because he knew I was a Sonic fan and I ended up really enjoying it. Now S3+K is my favorite of the trilogy.
>>
i remember renting Sonic Spinball as a kid and realizing it was literally pinball. It was an L, but I can't imagine how pissed I'd be if I'd wasted a birthday or christmas on that game
>>
>>12065293
Gameplay: Spinball crushes the competition
Soundtrack: tie

>>12065019
Spinball is a decent game and I will die on that hill. Last stage is stupidly hard tho. Also Lava Powerhouse is a banger. Top ten sonic for sure.
>>
>>12065378
you say that like pinball is bad
>>
Who gives a shit, it's a spinoff, I thought it was trash even as a kid. But then I got Mega Collection and learned that there were worse Sonic spinoffs, like Sonic Drift for example, they should've made a kart racer for the Genesis, something like Super Mario Kart, but instead we ended up with something that plays like that F-1 game for the GB except even worse

this is the only sonic game i ever had besides the original. it was way too hard for me. im not sure if i ever made it to the 3rd stage.

>Sonic and Sonic 2 both being pack-in titles that millions got bundled with their console inflates their popularity as many people got it by default.
True. The rest is stupid bullshit. Not only did nobody think of either S3 or S&K as "half games," they were fucking stoked to play shit like sonic 2 as knuckles. It was like an official romhack in the days before romhack were even really known to most people, and the ones that knew usually involved hex editing bullshit or getting your game genie drunk on mints.
I want to know where this delusion comes from, especially with the "$120 for the full game" retardation. Do you even know what game prices were at the time? If they were just two parts of the same game then I guess Doom 2 was just "the other half." Fucking sophistry.
>>
>>12065378
First time I played it was at a display demo in a department store. Honestly liked it just as much even though I couldn't even figure out all the emeralds on the first stage. Wasn't even a pinball fan, but there was already shit like DRMBM that was fun as shit to get me interested enough to figure it out by renting it a shitton.
>>12065575
Shitters never put the time in to get good due to the horrendous game over music, which is kinda understandable since you'll hear it a lot when you suck. People blanket shit on the entire soundtrack just off a fucking shitpost the dude made with the game over screen. Considering its based on pinball, you would think people would be more willing to accept its delayed gratification compared to the rest of the series, but nah.
>>12065581
Sonic Drift 1 and 2 were both great, fuck you buddy.
>>
>>12065019
I recently played it and enjoyed it. I stopped at level 5 because the table sucks ass.
>>
Spinball is actually fun and overheated, it's the game gear version that's cheeks. Labyrinth and 3D Blast were both way worse.
>>
>>12065315
Sonic 3, at least in North America, was only bundled twice, once in 1994 and again in 1996.
Meanwhile, Sonic 1 was bundled with every Genesis console for nearly a year, and Sonic 2 was bundled with releases between 1992 and 1994, nearly 2 years.
>>
I really enjoyed Spinball but I HATED the stupid ass framerate slow down.

How the FUCK do you have that much slowdown in a sonic game.
>>
>>12067349
There were also Sega Genesis + 6 Pak bundles between 1995 and 1997 that included Sonic 1.
>>
>>12067352
Coded in C instead of 68K assembly
>>
>>12067357
Has anyone been able to hack it to fix the slow down? is it C lang problem or programmer problem
>>
>>12067358
More likely a programmer problem.
Ecco the Dolphin was also programmed in C and runs great.
>>
>>12067361
ah nice
>>
>>12065019
Sonic 3 sold a fraction because it was an absolute trash game with half the levels, horrible music (Icecap being the only exception) and so many bugs that they put it in the manual that Robotnik has so insidious traps that the only way to escape them is to reset the console.
>>
WORM BAGGED
>>
>>12067358
Someone on Sonic retro was trying to fix it, the program checks a lot of unnecessary things on each frame even if they are off screen, you might have noticed it gets smoother when you defeat more enemies. I really got into it on a handheld with faster emulated cpu which showed there is a great game hiding under the slowdown. I'm not bothered by it much anymore, I enjoy trying to make games slowdown as much as possible now.

>>12067361
Secret of Mana, Lion King and many Neo Geo games too.

>>12065019
I think the character was seen as outdated until Sonic Adventure revived him.
