There's no Blast spell in either version of Shining Force 1. It's a thing in Shining in the Darkness, though.

I wish pic related wasnt canceled.

Sega killed a bunch of other games because they were re-routing money for the horrific looking Hyenas game. They stole assets from all other game development to pay hundreds of millions to develop it, and then abandoned it because it looked like a worse version of Concord and consumer surveys showed it would be dead on arrival if finished. Biggest financial disaster in Sega history, and that is saying a LOT.

Where do I start with this series? What are the must-play games?
>>
>>12067072
The team who made the series left after SF3, and it showed. There are probably a few good titles after that point, but I just don't see the series as being Shining Force. So it's basically -

Main series:
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Shining Force 3

Handheld spin-offs:
Shining Force Gaiden
Shining Force Gaiden 2
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict

Remakes:
Shining Force CD (remake of Gaiden + Gaiden 2 + bonus scenario)
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon (remake of Shining Force)

Also worth mentioning:
Feda: The Emblem of Justice (some of the original devs worked on this title)
>>
>>12067072
The Must-Plays are
>Shining the Holy Ark (This is a DRPG, not an SRPG)
>Shining Force 3 Scenario 1
>Shining Force 3 Scenario 2
>Shining Force 3 Scenario 3

If you're playing in chronological order:
>Shining Force
>Shining Force CD
>Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
>Shining Force 2

>Shining the Holy Ark
>Shining Force 3

The first 4 are pretty much unrelated lore-wise from the last 2 outside of easter eggs.

Shining Wisdom sucks.
Shining in the Darkness is just a run of the mill DRPG with not much going for it.
Shining Force GBA remake should be avoided.

I love SF but hate the xp system. I want to level up my party evenly so I'm not stuck with 4+ characters that can only do 1 damage and just die to one hit but besides the big 6 everyone else just starts naturally falling behind and it's tedious to grind levels and make sure to position everyone and time turns so the weak links can get finishing blows.

I think I'm just going to ignore everyone but the GOATs.
>>
>>12069142
>and make sure to position everyone and time turns so the weak links can get finishing blows.
And that's why I use archers, despite them being weak-ish. They make positioning brainless, especially once they get better weapons.
>>
>>12069142
sf1 is so much worse for that. experience doesnt roll over on level up too. what i do is i set aside certain battles that dont involve too much walking, and grind those to even everyone out, and push for extra levels until the monsters stop giving max xp. like the circus, harbor, and kane battles. however, with the rng of level ups, you'll get shit like hans only leveling up speed for 5 levels in a row, and he has no hope of dealing damage to contribute in a meaningful manner. and then you finally get a new weapon, but its too little too late. same with the birdmen. and THEN certain characters just join you woefully under leveled, and require a stupid amount of catering. for some reason everyone likes to shit on arthur, even though he only needs like 3-5 levels and is the fucking mvp GOAT, and they sing the praises of bleu, who needs like 10+ levels
>>
>>12069247
Arthur can also be a victim of RNG, like everyone else.
Once I had a meh Arthur, weak Zylo and strong Gong. Funnily enough, I also kept Hans in that run long enough for missiles to turn him into a beast.
>>
>>12069282
i have never had a problem with arthur. i guess i should mention that i always push to 20 before promotion (hitting 20 during farming of the kane fight), because in the past i had promoted at 10 and shafted myself with the stat drop (which is another fucking retarded thing sf1 does). i think that was the only time i ever had a weak zylo, was promoting him too early. i recall having a weak luke that way too.
>>
>>12069321
It was level 20 run.
Arthur was only as good as other centaurs and that's with me giving him a stronger weapon. I remember ending up with getting more use out of Pelle that time. SF1 can be just wacky like that.
>>
>>12069342
damn thats crazy. i find that mediocre characters are more often randomly strong than strong characters are randomly weak though. i never really bother with weak characters, so i dont have any stories of surprising success with them, only fruitless struggles.

sf2 fixes pretty much every QoL inconvenience of sf1. picking up an item from a chest automatically gives it to the next available character with an open slot, experience rolls over, level up stats are more normalized, characters join actually immediately useful instead of gimped, and YES, almost all outdoor battles have a path that cuts through the rugged terrain. there are like 2 or 3 battles with a lot of desert, and some battles will have a little bit of forest/mountain to slow you down for certain spots but its not very thick. and there are next to no choke points either (sf1 had loads of needless chokepoints)

if you wanna cheese replay some levels with healers and spam healing spells to get more XP i think?

So did this series get shelved but those other normal rpg shining games made it to PS4?
>>
>>12071889
Depends on what exactly you mean. But, as with most Sega franchises, especially RPG ones: it's complicated.
By made it to PS4, you probably mean Resonance Refrain, which is a remaster of a PS3 game. It was originally made right after two Shining TRPGs for PSP made by Valkyria Chronicles 3 dev. And then there weren't any new games at all since.
If you're asking for a TRPG in Force subseries specifically, there was Shining Force Feather for DS.
Well, at some point there also was a gacha game in development, but its publisher bled money, so it never materialized.
>>
>>12069680
The first is extremely barebones and boring. 2 is damn fucking good. Probably one of my favorites games on the system and maybe the biggest time sink on the GBA. The music and the slow dialogue boxes are the biggest gripes with it, however.

honestly, i've never tried (because i love getting everyone powerful and dominating), but i want to say yes that people have done it. if you do fail, you can always just keep your experience and try again, and it shouldnt be so much that you cakewalk or anything. its probably a good way to keep the difficulty. however, you will probably need to promote as soon as promotion-only weapons become available, or you will be too far behind.

In SF1 you get three amazing fliers (Kokichi, Balbaroy, and Amon) that snowball hard with Power Ring Boosts.
Balbory and Amon can wield the Chaos Breaker (despite what many guides say), and cast free Freeze 3s with it, and which ever one doesn't get the Chaos Breaker can use the Katana and Power Ring for similar damage
Kokichi can wield the Evil Ring for Bolt 3s and the Valkyrie for massive physical damage
Domingo is incredibly bulky and Attracts enemies as much as Max for some reason.
Tao and Anri for AoE damage to help with clearing out Rout maps, Luke or Gort can use the Heat Axe (you can get 2 with an Egress, but that's what we're trying to avoid) to do AoEs with Blaze 2, and the Atlas Axe comes later for Blaze 3s.
Pelle is strong out of the gate and never falls off. Really all of the Centaurs are good (except Arthur), but there's only so many unique weapons/rings to hand out and Pelle is just better than the others.
Hans and Diane get ridiculously powerful weapons and have very minimal movement penalties over terrain.

The only shitter you have to use is Max, but if you can get him to promotion he can use the White Ring for a few Aura 1s every battle.

You could probably use Lowe or Kris for Healing if you want as well. They also get boosted experience from using healing items so running out of MP doesn't mean they're done gaining experience for that fight.

Guntz is nice because he's has a "Float" movement type like Domingo, but there's only one of the Valkyrie and Devil Lance so he'll be stuck with the Halberd at endgame.

Musashi has pretty good stats, but has terrible movement and Balbaroy and Amon will get much more usefulness out of the best swords.

Really just don't use obviously bad/investment characters like Arthur, Gong, Zylo, Lyle, Bleu, Adam, Alef, and Torasu and you can easily beat the game with no grind.
>>
>>12073232
>Really all of the Centaurs are good (except Arthur)
arthus is easily the best IF you can cater to him, but that probably wont be possible with a no egress run, and without others falling behind.
>guntz
>musashi
theres the running ring and i think 2 peppers to increase movement. you can easily make them not suck, and musashi is a gigachad.
>zylo bad investment
i've always found him immediately and consistently useful (with the exception of one game where he sucked shit after promotion that i mentioned before). i dont recall him needing any special treatment exactly.
>>
>>12072691
I haven't played SF2 very many times, but I imagine you could just solo the whole thing with Peter. Master Monk Sarah and Pegasus Knight Erik could probably help him for an even easier time.
>>
>>12073247
Arthur is nearly impossible to get to the level where he actually gets good in a no grind run, and even when he's better it's just overkill when Pelle with kill enemies just as effectively.

Guntz and Musashi's main problem is that there's just not enough of the best weapons to go around, and the mobility ring and pepper are much better used on characters that already have good movement. They are definitely usable on a no grind run though if you ditch Pelle or Amon.

Zylo's biggest issue is that he can't use weapons or Magic and his Attack doesn't grow enough to match units who can use weapons. He can be fine before promotion but as soon as he takes his promotion penalties without a promoted weapon to counter act it, he requires to much grind to be decent.

>Pegasus Knight
you have to hold out for 3 battles instead of promoting right away (even though the creed crew join at 24). i really hate how late they put the pegasus wing compared to all of the other items.
>>
>>12073258
>just not enough of the best weapons to go around
musashi is a beast as is. literally all you have to do is fix his movement. i dont know what you're smoking to think he needs ANY sort of special treatment other than that. he has decent hp, incredible defense, and hits like a truck.
guntz would be fine with a halberd too. whats wrong with the halberd? also you can use it to cast bolt.
>birdmen
honestly, im not really sure what you're thinking with the birds. even in my games where i try to farm people, the birds just fall behind. they dont get any defense bonuses from land effect so they get smashed, they dont really get good defense level ups to compensate, and you REALLY have to feed and cater to them during the gap from middlesword to longsword (which is needlessly extensive) for them to do any sort of damage. its always such a struggle for me to get the birds to DO anything, i shudder to think what a no-egress attempt would be like. i would literally rather have another paladin with even a chrome lance at the end than to bother with the birds.
>zylo takes his promotion penalties
ah, i see. that will do it i suppose. timing promotion with weapon acquisition in order to offset penalties wouldnt be a factor for him.
>>
>>12073268
The birdmen require Boosts from using the power ring to start snowballing, but they're always the first into battle on outdoor maps so they are the best first uses of the power ring before it cracks every battle. In every no grind run I've done all three fliers end up at at least level 20/20 because of how easy they are to position, and how they trivialize some of the most annoying terrain maps in the game.

I really do think Guntz and Musashi are good, I just also think there are better uses for the 2 movement items (There's only one pepper afaik). If I'm going to repair bad movement it will probably be someone like Domingo so he can get in the fight to draw aggro and tank better, or Luke/Gort so they can get in faster to use Blaze 2/3. Halberd only giving you +25 Attack is pretty bad compared to other late game weapons. It's still usable, but not great.
>>
>>12073285
i just dont see why the boost couldnt equally just be used on literally anyone else too (like arthur. who WILL utterly explode in stat growth after promotion). yes sf1 has a lot of tedious terrain, but you still want to keep people together.
>There's only one pepper afaik
you're right, i was thinking of sf2, which has 2 peppers. and yes, there are a lot of things that you can do with added movement, but i would never abandon my boy musashi. he's just too good.
>>
>>12073292
I just find that you get much more milage out of Boosts on fliers, and once they gain only a few levels (except Kokichi, he's just always good) it's not exactly necessary. Arthur being good requires you to level him to 20 before promotion and then like 10 levels after that to get the ulility you get from consistently Pelle as soon as he joins, and he doesn't get as many oppurtunities to get experience as the fliers or AoE attackers do so it's harder for him to actually snowball.
>>
>>12073292
I also just think we have differing play styles because I do like to extend as far as I can in SRPGs and not keep units close together. Domingo really helps with this because he draws enemies to him instead of the squishier units.
>>
>>12073258
>Guntz and Musashi's main problem is that there's just not enough of the best weapons to go around
>Zylo's biggest issue is that he can't use weapons
Anon, you've literally pointed out that relying on weapons is a weakness too.
Zylo's main strength is not using weapons. He will be stronger than sword/spear users that got stuck with weaker weapons, while not getting in the way of other force members.
His movement is also second only to fliers, as he takes no penalties from forests and mountains.

I do remember having a bad time promoting him in the last run that I did level 20 promotions though. I can't point all the reasons, but when I did level 10 promotion runs he performed notably better. Top 5 even.
>>
>>12073318
My problems with weapons are at different points in the game. Zylo suffers post promotion while Others suffer late/endgame.
I think you have room for one of these characters (if you don't Egress for a second Heat Axe), and they will perform good, but they will perform worse than the others overall.
>>
>>12067745
Retroarch is fucking garbage. Use standalone emulators.
>>
>>12068049
The turn order is based on speed, I think. It doesn't matter actually, the game is pretty easy.
>>
>>12073232
I have never had a bad Zylo game. I always feel like he has the most consistant stats in the game. I wouldnt call max a shitter but he can get some bad levels if your unlucky. If anything the one of the birds usually.dosnt end up pulling their weight whenever I use both. Kris often ends up a decent fighter.by midgame as long as you dont frontline her, at least compared to all then other healers
>>
>>12073302
in my normal, grindy runs, as soon as arthur catches up during circus grind, he functions perfectly fine with the rest of the fighters, even pulling ahead a bit before reaching 20. after promotion, his stat growth explodes within the first 5 levels (usually. sf1 has wild rng) sending him even further ahead. pelle joins strong/competent, but he never really does anything "special".
>>12073315
and yes, i swarm and overwhelm, but leading with somebody with high defense/hp. gort in the early game, guntz/musashi later. diving forward doesnt do much if the rest of the team cant BE there once the engagement starts.
>>
>>12073318
>bad time, level 20 promotions
thats crazy. i never had a bad time with zylo if i push 20. and even IF the promotion penalty hits him hard then, he bounces back in just a few levels as long as you dont skip through battles and let the monsters get stonger than his growth. and why would you anyway? promoting at 20 resets your experience rate to if you were level 10, so you can fully farm right away.

I played SF1 to death as a kid but never got very far, played RoDD like 5 times, and finally completed a vanilla Genesis playthrough last year.

All NG+ in RoDD are even easier with early full power Mawlock being broken as fuck.
