I recently rescued a Sears Telegames Super Video Arcade, a rebranded Intellivision, from a bin of electronic waste and don't have any games to play on it. What are some good games for the Intellivision to pick up?
>>12066220Utopia
>>12066220
>>12066231Mega-based, but really only worth a shit with two players. To answer OP, picrel is not just my favorite game of all time, I'd go so far as to say it's probably THE best game ever made. Others I'd recommend:>Sub Hunt>TRON Deadly Discs>Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man>Astrosmash
>>12066231Oh hey, I've heard of this one, I always thought it was for the Commodore 64 or another 8-bit home computer. I'll have to pick it up!>>12066257Microsurgeon? Never heard of it, but it looks interesting. I'll see if I can find a cartridge.
>>12066220I forgot the name, but the D&D game is insanely ahead of its time, worth checking out.
>>12066315>the D&D gameThere were two D&D games. The first one was just called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, often referred to since as Cloudy Mountain. The other one is Treasure of Tarmin. Two different genres, both great games.
>>12066334Ah thanks anon, it was definitely Cloudy Mountain I was thinking of.
>>12066220>from a bin of electronic wasteThat's a great find! What place was throwing that out?
>>12066315AD&D Cloudy Mountain
>>12066315I actually used to have the AD&D game complete in box. I'm a fa/tg/uy mostly and snagged it at a yard sale 10+ years ago for pennies because I thought it was a book at first glance. Unfortunately it must have gotten lost in a move or I gave it to someone who had an intellivision, but it's top of my list to get another copy of. This one.>>12066281Can BEEEE SEVENTEEN BAWWWMER be played without the intellivoice? I don't think I'm going to be lucky enough to pull one of those out of waste bin like the main console. >Sub HuntLooks fun, I'll give it a shot.>TronI also used to have a copy of this from the same yard sale, but like AD&D, it's since gone missing. I'll have to grab a new copy of that as well. >He Man Shit, the price range on this one is crazy. If i can find it for cheap I'll pick it up, but those ebay listings for $1000 aren't filling me with confidence. Might just have to emulate this one. >Astrosmash I think I have this one for my Atari 2600. It was ported as Astroblast, right? Oh yeah, if it helps, I already have an Atari 2600 with Space Invaders, Berzerk, Missile Command, Defender, Adventure, Pitfall, River Raid, Robot Tank, Starmaster, Chopper Command, Donkey Kong, Q*Bert, AstroBlast, and Video Olympics. Don't want any duplicates of those unless the Intellivision port is noticeably superior.>>12066369Local thrift store. They have a box of miscellaneous wires/TV Remotes/various electronics they sell for $2 or less. Basically junk, but you still have to pay them money. It was buried under a broken PS4. They must not have known what it was or how to test it, because I've seen this place charge $80 for a Sega Genesis.
>>12066413You might like some of the INTV games from later in the system's lifecycle like Thunder Castle and Tower of Doom.
>>12066427Those both look sick, thanks for the recommendation. Tower of Doom especially seems up my alley. Apparently it was a third AD&D game that they lost the license to during development, so I'll have to get it to go with the other two.
>>12066220Imagic stuff is always the best. I particularly enjoyed Beauty and the Beast.
>>12066413>Can BEEEE SEVENTEEN BAWWWMER be played without the intellivoice?Technically, yes. But it's a bitch.>TronIt can be found hella cheap, I'm sure.>He ManI had no idea the price had gotten so crazy. Emulating might be okay, as I don't remember using the number pad much, if at all.>AstroblastI don't know about a 2600 port, but if you played that you didn't really play the game.
>>12066562I think my favorite Imagic game is probably Demon Attack.
>>12066823Speaking of shooters, The Dreadnaught Factor and Mission X are both great.
>>12066220Night Stalker
>>12066823If you've never played the C64 version, do so. I believe it was never officially published, (though it got out onto pirate sites very quickly) and I think it's the best version of the game.
>>12066847I wanna like Night Stalker, but Dark Cavern on the 2600 plays so much better. Every time I play Night Stalker I feel like I'm fighting the controls more than the game.
OP here, I picked up the cheapest unlabeled cartridge I could find to make sure the unit worked, which turned out to be Bowling. I then went to a small local retro store and grabbed a copy of Utopia, Tron Maze-a-tron, and AD&D Treasure of Tarmin. They didn't have much selection, but hopefully I'll go to a larger store later this weekend and pick up more of your suggestions.
>>12067128Cool man. Keep it going.
>>12067128A lot of people find Maze-a-Tron to be inscrutable, but it's certainly worth giving it a shot.Keep trying to find Deadly Discs if you can. It's much more accessible.
What's the deal with Intellivision anyway? Why was it so unpopular?
>>12067262It was fairly popular compared to other non-Atari consoles of the era, but it couldn’t beat the 2600 on price, and it didn’t have the same library of arcade ports.
>>12067262It wasn't, it created a lot of buzz up until the Colecovision came along and stole its thunder
>>12067289Would the Intellivision III have turned the tide?
>>12067297Hard to say, but if we're doing hypotheticals, Atari could have brought out the 7800 or an equivalent quite a few years earlier if the Warner execs hadn't pushed out Nolan Bushnell and fucked everything up. Fun fact about the Intellivision and Coleco (and the NES): the arrival of 2600 competitors was caused by Bushnell's ousting as head of Atari. He knew the 2600's days were numbered and had not just one successor in development, but a whole host of experimental projects which were keeping the various chip fabricators completely booked for the near future, as a stalling tactic until something was ready. But the dumb boomer execs from WB thought that was a pointless waste. They seemed to think that 2600 carts were like .45 rpm records, and once you set the format you could sell them forever, so they had their guy cancel all those projects which freed up resources for rival competitors to begin manufacturing.
>>12067309>They seemed to think that 2600 carts were like .45 rpm records, and once you set the format you could sell them foreverWhat could have been...
>>12067314I find it kinda hard to fault them, the market was largely not understood yet, and when they acquired Atari, Bushnell told them the 2600 was old tech and needed to be replaced, but their guy thought it just needed marketing, and their guy was 100% right on that count. The 2600 went from an also-ran about as well known as the Fairchild to a household name that sold millions. Unfortunately, that meant that the higher-ups thought their guy was a genius and Bushnell was just a chicken little, but the long view justified Bushnell. The 7800 got massively delayed by corporate bullshit and Atari went from the #1 name to a footnote in gaming history.
>>12067323>Atari, Bushnell told them the 2600 was old tech and needed to be replaced, but their guy thought it just needed marketing, and their guy was 100% right on that count. To be fair, Nintendo probably would have done the same exact thing.
>>12067262From my understanding, it's the PS3 to the Atari's Wii. It sold the second most units of its generation, was more powerful, and had more complex games. Unfortunately, it was also more expensive and just didn't have the massive game library or killer apps the Atari had.
