How did people buy this when it wasn’t even in stores

Most people would have a got a cheaper re-release instead of the big box first print run. Each release they take something out of the box and it gets cheaper. From 1990 to about 1997 they sold shareware compilations in stores too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FsllqBSG84

I bought it on Steam (after pirating it for 30 years)
I got it at the Swap-O-Rama flea market in Alsip, Illinois from a shady mexican man on bootleg 3.5" disks.

neither my brother nor i remember how we ended up with the first shareware version but im pretty sure it was on a 3.5" floppy because the DOOM logo on a diskette sticks out in my memory. but i also know i had at least 1 shareware cd compilation that had it too. i never actually bought the full version until just a few years ago on steam
You bought it through mail order or ordering over the phone using the instructions that came with the shareware copy you either bought at a store or got from a friend, Doom 2 also had a boxed retail release
