As a kid I never saw Sonic as a "badass" guy whose sole existence was to compete with Mario.
Modern perception of Sonic is youtuber historians always talking about the whole sega vs nintendo war and how SoA worked with SoJ to come up with Sonic to compete against Mario and that's basically what Sonic is seen as nowadays.
But for me? It was that mysterious, silent guy who ran across strange lands and had its own aura. I don't care about historically-accurate (mostly from SoA's side) narratives, they won't replace my own memories and perceptions.

Sega didn't really have official presence in my country so no TV ads here.
Genesis was popular here though, with lots of bootleg carts being cheap.
