What is genuinely the appeal of turn-based JRPGs? Everytime I try to get into them, I just bounce off of them and conclude that the combat doesn't have enough strategic depth to keep me interested. Mashing the A button to get through battles feels horrible and tiresome and I just don't get it.

Everything apart from the combat

FF is just poorly designed, but generally I don't think a good turn based JRPG does have you considering every battle with a degree of scrutiny. Auto battle/Tactics should be there for those low level encounters that don't require much thought, but the combat shines in the event encounters.
Then again, I've seen a guy on /vrpg/ who goes combo mad with FF games, so what do I know.

The NES ones do have some strategy to them and they can get pretty addicting if you have an 'MMORPG brain'. The newer ones are mostly story games that are also usually aesthetically pleasing and have great music

>The NES ones
Meant like 80s turn-based JRPGs in general

>'MMORPG brain'.

I can understand the appeal of continually leveling your party up, getting stronger, etc, but it feels lame when paired with a system that requires no skill of reflexes to play.
>>
>>12068452
why do you keep making this thread? i just don't get the appeal of that at all, it's just retarded.
>>
Not every game has to require a lot of skill OP, and a lot of these types of games are variety games in that they have exploration, puzzle, adventure etc. elements, or at least used to since a lot of more recent ones kind of don't and are just hallways on rails.

just play ff 1-6 and dragonquest then or mario and luigi or golden sun, all others are avoidable
>>
>>12068510
You gotta play Mother 1-3 and Phantasy Star 1 and 4 too

I never played jrpg's growing up so i have no nostaliga for them. DQ8 was the first older jrpg that really clicked with me after a while. Some old RPG's just do everything right in regards to slowly getting stronger, where there is always something to do or 1 more battle to get another piece of gear. The artstyle and graphics is what kept me playing. I had to start playing them without rushing, I take time to enjoy the world and talk to all the characters and the 60hrs+ just flew by. It made me patient and want to play more jrpgs and I learned to love them

>turn-based JRPGs
All jRPGs are turn-based.
>>
>>12068524
Mana/Seiken Densetsu, Tales of games etc. aren't
>>
>>12068527
Those are Japanese Action RPGs. :)
>>
The point of the game isn't the fighting it's preparation and optimization.

>poorly designed
It's not. Rudimentary, even crude, but making blobbers playable was revolutionary. You can't deny the elegance of the presentation and gameplay.

Charming, good change of pace from other genres, boss encounters force you to think about party structure and spell usage, good music, the progression of enemy encounters of lvl 1 goblins to 4 end game badasses at the same time, cool art design and enemy design.

Play something else, I don't ask what the appeal of platformers are.

Jarpigs are the most divisive genre on this board

It's genuinely a cultural difference. If you want to "understand the appeal" of old RPGs (which is different when "enjoying" them) you need to put yourself in the context of the time with the mindset of the people of the time. That's the problem with the young these days, they're unable to do that, unable to even fathom that things could ever have been different, and view everything from a modern point of view.

This post and this game is a good start honestly >>12068523 it's a 6th gen release but it emcompasses what old JRPGs were like that with the presentation of a 6th gen game so it should be easier to get into for a modern audiance.
DQ8 is a game that forces the player to really commit to it and to take it slow. The combat is also not completely braindead.
If you play DQ8 and still are unable to "get the appeal", you will never be able to.

We all know what's going to happen if he tries them, if an RPG is braindead they'll complain it's braindead, if an RPG actually requires planning and making good decisions they run back with their tails between their legs crying about how the games are "artificial difficulty" and how they cheated to go through the game but "actually the way they did it isn't cheating".
>>
>>12068452
Have you tried Final Fantasy Tactics or Front Mission? Not quite the same as JRPGs but they scratch the same itch for me personally. Might be what you need anon.
>>
>>12068452
you probably needed to play them when you were a kid. i very much doubt i would care about these games if i hadnt.
>>
>>12068452
There is none. Every single JRPG is the slot machine equivalent of video game. Story and Sountrack is the only good part of these games. I wouldn't be suprised if you can teach a monkey how to play FF1-9 combat.
>>
In older JRPGs the combat worked in conjunction with a more open structure. The world felt like a grand puzzle where figuring out where to go and what to do was as much a part of the game as the fights.
With the transition to 16 bit most games started doing away with those elements and became linear moviegames. They also decided not to improve on the basic level DQ2 systems in almost any way for decades since.
>>
>>12068452
Damn I understood the appeal immediately at 8 years old, you must have something wrong with you sorry to hear that.
>>
>>12070001
I rmbr trying to play it at that age and still being frustrated.
>>
>>12070001
This, literally just played Pokémon and thought the combat was based as fuck
