For those of you that were around to experience the birth of online multiplayer in the 90s and early 2000s, what are your memories and go-to games around that time?

Clans were a big thing

I played a few MUDs in the 80s, actually

Getting to play Diablo 1 for 15 minutes before being told to stop hogging the phone line.
Later I ended up spending an ungodly amount of time playing Soldat.

Yep, I was also playing Diablo 1 and remember getting cut off constantly by phone calls.

Played a lot of Diablo 1, Ragnarok Online, and a ridiculous amount of Counter-Strike 1.5 and 1.6.

Would play CS with friends from school almost every day (surf, kz, zombie mod, or regular). Was totally incredible back then before cheaters ruined nearly every online game.

I remember using some programs like Kali and Kahn to matchmake I guess? this was before GameSpy. I remember playing Descent through Kali.

actually I also remember playing a few times with a friend by doing the direct connection via modem, where one person sends the call and the other receives it. I don't remember it too well but for 28k modems it was actually pretty smooth

I remember ignoring it for the most part. If I'd been into dealing with other humans in real time then I wouldn't have been so interested in video games to begin with. If the AI for computer-controlled opponents were good enough to surpass humans then I would NEVER want to play a multiplayer competitive game with strangers.

Occasionally I did get into some FPS or another though. I loved Forsaken deathmatch (over Kali) and Unreal Tournament. I also played through Diablo II, albeit mostly by myself. Oh and I was into the Sacrifice multiplayer scene during the short time when that was flourishing.

Also my go-tos were Goldsrc and Source games and mods. Nothing better.

My dad was in a Delta Force clan around that time and it was fun to watch them play. They all knew each other for the most part but I think they met one of the guys through playing. He lived up in the mountains with a bunch of kids so he loved to get the guys who had kids to bring us up to hang out, a very beautiful and picturesque home and setting with a pond. He died in an accident involving a tractor trailer while driving down into the city to meet up with dad and friends; they all only got to meet up twice.
