Sometimes less is more. Early 3D would've benefited from more simplicity. Look at this goodness: 480i, 60fps, compelling abstract visuals. Meanwhile you chose to cream your pants for some blocky realism simulator running at 10 fps.

Timmy my son
yuo have 5th gen system
will you pick buttery smooth 60fps racer with 30 opponents and suggestive graphics that let the brain fill up the gaps
or unplayable first person shooter running at 10fps?

I didn't understand how to play this game at all, but it definitely looked cool
>>

What blocky realism simulator running at 10 fps? I never mentioned any blocky realism simulator running at 10 fps.
>>
>>12069373
iS came out in 99 so I'm not sure what 3D games you're comparing it to, Metal Gear Solid?
>>
>>12069394
It's pretty easy. I recommend sticking to the monkey weapon.

After a while simplicity loses its charm and people require complexity. It's not really a bad thing, it's just the "wave of novelty"and it's a completely natural human reaction to anything.

>Grug throw rock. Grug like rock but rock too simple. Grug invent spear. Spear also good. In old age Grug miss good old times of skull smashing with rock.
>"Well yes the impressionist movement is quite beautiful but there's a sort of naive charm in realism don't you think?"
>"Oh I love modern games like God of War but this one retro-inspired pixel art first person dungeon crawler just has a je ne sais quoi about it, you know?"

It ebbs and flows. New thing evolves quickly until people miss the old days. If the Playstation only had games like tempest and jumping flash all the way through to 1996 it would have died like the dreamcast did.

Don't fucking care, I can like both things as I don't have a prohibitive sensitivity to low framerates.

don't badmouth saturn quake, it has more polygons than the sun!

You're really not appreciating just how much talent and effort is required to make even fairly simple looking graphics run fast at a good framerate on retro hardware
Most games ran like ass regardless of their graphical quality, poor performance was by no means limited to just nice looking games.
>>
People would have laughed in your face for trying to release that in 1997.
Games were *supposed* to be getting more realistic and sophisticated. You wouldn't get it if if you grew up with GTAIV. At that point, the stuff people were excited about in the 90's, only seems like a hilarious misstep.
You don't get how cool it was just to walk around in a tangible 3D space and see characters look like humans, kind of.

Was it impossible to have made a 5th gen FPS running at 60 frames? How come even sprite based horizontal axis only stuff like Doom and Hexen ran slowly?

they don't care about eff pie esses but given the vast majority of 5th gen console games running at 60fps are Japan-based, they probably could have done it. First person view is nothing special.
>>
>>12069985
That's a good point. Just blows my mind Japan had full 3D games at 60 frames while Westoids couldn't even get 2.5D Doom to run at that on the PSX.

Forsaken PS1 has some drastic framedrops though.
>>
>>12070004
When there's over a half dozen enemies shooting at you the game drops frames. Sounds reasonable unlike when a chair happens to come into view from a doorway in goldeneye causing the framerate to drop to the single digits unless you preemptively stare at the ground.

Because id absolutely refused any port that would have any sort of texture warping, so they had to use a more demanding technique

I like both, your "graphic warring" is pathetic and doesn't belong to retro players.

The weapons have a pretty big gap in usefulness from my experience. You can freely edit your weapon wheel from the main menu and unequip the stuff you don't like. Monkey, Bird and Tiger were my 3 main ones. There's also the weird tile matching part, I don't know the best way to do those but I just used Sheep to push one of the tiles back and pass through.

I have "showcasing a niche hidden gem solely to facilitate the same tired old good new bad argument" fatigue

Talk about iS without linking it back to how much you hate modernity, or fuck off.
>>
>>12071821
My Afro-American friend, I'm comparing IS to its contemporaries. When I'm talking about "blocky realism simulator running at 10fps" I mean stuff like GoldenEye or Perfect Dark. Nowhere is modernity mentioned. My point is that the hardware wasn't ready to display more realist worlds yet, unlike 6th gen onwards (more MODERN systems, which I didn't hate on). For the 5th gen, non-realist graphics were a smarter choice.
>>
>>12071826
You should know with "realism simulator" you're being pretty silly.

>I FUCKING love science

>>12071826
Plenty of PS1 games ran at 10fps too.
>>
>>12071835
That's the 64 my Friend

The standard was 30FPS for 3D games + a tons of 2D games at 60 FPS
>>
>>12071839
Okay, but lots of PS1 games still ran at 10fps. Same with the Saturn
>>
>>12071830
You should know that when I talk about "early 3D" I mean a very specific era of gaming. Don't come here anymore to vomit your diarrhea.
>>12071835
I just gave two examples that came from the top of my mind, no need to be offended tendofriend.
>>
>>12071843
Both of the examples you posted can be played in 60fps now

>"blocky realism simulator running at 10fps" I mean stuff like GoldenEye or Perfect Dark. Nowhere is modernity mentioned. My point is that the hardware wasn't ready to display more realist worlds yet
That's your opinion in hindsight. People wanted the realism, and they wanted it then and there, and were willing to take the hit when it came to framerates.
Also this bias that 60fps is an absolute minimum you should settle for, is pretty modern. If you were playing Doom on your family PC as a kid, it may literally have being running at single digit speeds. People were just happy that the game was there.
What do you not get about this?
>but the PS2 did it better!
Yeah, that was half a decade later, and we had to go through the slightly awkward early phase to get there.
>>
>>12069373
>Meanwhile you chose to cream your pants for some blocky realism simulator running at 10 fps.
That "blocky realism" is the stuff that pushed the technology, art direction, and arguably the entire industry forward. If everything stagnated on simple geometric shapes because of some "muh optimized aesthetic for the hardware limitations" agenda, nothing would have ever improved—innovation comes first; optimization later.

These "compelling abstract visuals" of yours are basically the kind of shit people were using to make screensavers and winamp visualizers 25 years ago—the graphical equivalent of jingling keys in front of a retard. You shouldn't be surprised that nobody was frothing at the mouth for them to dominate the industry.

But you'd know all this if you weren't just a retarded zoomer shitposting in bad faith ;^D

NTA, but not on native hardware.
