A horror masterpiece for Xbox.
>>12072354This runs badly on PC, whats it like on xbox?
>>12072359No real problems on Xbox. Seems to be the PC port wasn't finished.
it stops being a horror game one hour in and turns into a bad half life clone.
>>12072397>horror is when no combatbrainrotten zoomie. amnesia and its consequences have been a disaster for survival horror.
>it's locked
>>12072397This, I don't think anyone can do a vidya that hits lovecraft well. You'd need pretty much taking the COC table top and put into a sandboxy game where you can pre load stories. It's a fun game and as a long time lovecraft nerd I have it and it's fine.
>>12072397I wonder what it'd have been like if they just pulled back on the guns entirely and only really gave you access to two or three with ammo being extremely scarce.
>>12072771>The door is bolted shut.
>>12072359I've had it crash a few times. Disc is perfectly clean.
>>12072354This game really overestimated its replayability with that ranking system.
>>12073281Frankly I think the only way to do a lovecraft game is to have it be a fun game with lovecraft flavoring rather than attempting to do a straight lovecraft game, because the only way to feasibly do one would be to make a walking sim. Even though it's off topic on this board and half the people on this site seethe at it, I think bloodborne is probably the best way to go about doing a game like that.
>>12075634Lovecraft's stories are visually very imaginative and strong, but in a way that's lost when you adapt them to any type of medium other than text. I think this game does a pretty good job of adapting various concepts and ideas, and it has a really rich atmosphere to go with it. Lovecraft has been a bit spoiled by his own fans because the entire Cthulhu mythos is something which has always been a bit lost on me. Cthulhu was memed so heavily and early on the Internet that it's hard to really feel anything about it. I also think the intention was to make the hymns and prayers about Cthulhu alien and unintelligible, and when you hear them said aloud in any form of media the effect is completely lost.
>>12072779I think the forst Alone in the Dark captures the gothic horror/fantasy side of his writing, with the characters and the style of prose in the readables (and the plot is basically investigating the death of someone who would be a main character in a Lovecraft story). It isn't that scary though, which arguably also is a quality it shares with many of Lovecraft's works.
>>12075646Start out realistic and progress artstyles until it becomes freaky and impressionistic. Probably degrade or distort the audio too. Human devs don't produce games like this though because it's not efficient.

>>12072779The best Lovecraft game by far is Bloodborne, followed by COCDCOTE. Any game that markets itself as "lovecraft-inspired" is a sign of a bad game that can't stand on its own merits.
>>12072363Does it have the bug where the witches you were supposed to shoot didn't appear?
>>12077990What is actually "Lovecraft" about Bloodborne?

>>12078054You're either retarded, or you haven't read Lovecraft, or you haven't played Bloodborne.
>>12078136I have read Lovecraft, I haven't played Bloodborne.
>>12072354played it last year, and dropped it around the 4-5 hour mark,it gets so boring and tedious.>masterpiecetake meds.
>>12078579Imagine having such awful taste. I bet you're a weeb who thinks Resident Evil/Silent Hill games are the height of survival horror.
>>12078054there's squids and fish people and this one dude talks about space sometimes and this other dude talks about being cuhrayzee :P
>>12078168NTA but several areas and enemies are directly inspired by Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, for one.I mean the game is largely original concepts, if inspired, but it really does the "unknowable cosmic horrors and maddening insignificance" thing very well. Not just "whoa heckin cthulu and squid people"
>>12077990>> Bloodborneweird way to spell Shadow Of The Comet
It's really funny to me how for the last section of the refinery level Hoover tells you you have 8 minutes until the explosives go off but the section you're in can easily take an hour if you don't know what you're doing.
>>12079782I played the game 4 or 5 times over the years and still I end up going in loops at the refinery level.
>>12075646>Lovecraft's stories are visually very imaginative and strong, but in a way that's lost when you adapt them to any type of medium other than text. This is why for me, Anchorhead is the best Lovecraft inspired game.
>>12079964Videogame gore is pretty ineffective for the most part but the agent who gets ground to death is horrifying.
>>12080012That one, and also the scene of father coming to find his daughter killed (Ramona?) also left an impression on young me.I don't know why the game isn't more loved/appreciated, /v/ and /vr/ are alike way too hasty to call on its flaws.
>>12080017This is one of the first threads I've seen on it. It's weird, I remember this being called something of a "must play" when it first out and maybe due to that reception people came to be quite harsh regarding it. I don't think it's perfect, but I think it's one of the few games of its era to have an engrossing and fleshed out world. It has some unintentional laughs (the voice acting is solid but some of Jack's lines feel like they were done with all the wrong stage direction, the game is also very overactive in playing them, I think the clumsiest one is how Jack recites the prayer perfectly and unfazed while the city is coming down on him at the end, twice I might add).
>>12080039Yes, protag VA has a very strong detective/noir feel to its delivery, which I honestly don't mind all that much.
In another world this game would have been a 90s point-and-click/cinematic platformer hybrid with the final sections playing like when you have the electric gun in Heart of Darkness.
>>12080006>AnchorheadAh, a distinguished gentleman of taste and refinement
