Masterpiece or franchise killer?
>>
That's a real fucking retarded question, anon. It killing the franchise is a matter of historical record.
>>
>>12073335
Both, like Chrono Cross
>>
Reminder that all Chrono Cross, Dragon Quarter, and FF8 threads are made by the same autists engaging in the same retarded slapfights since GameFAQs.
Hide and move on, there's no discussion here, just microdick energy.
>>

Not OP, but that's not how it works. "Franchise Killer" as a phrase doesn''t mean "any game that sold poorly and was the last game in its franchise," it's used for games that sold poorly because they were so bad nobody liked them and they killed their franchise by being awful.

There's plenty of counterexample; solid games that sold poorly because their franchise or style of game had run its course and was no longer popular. A lot of adventure game franchises spawned during the Myst era fit this category, and a lot of old turn-based strategy games that didn't keep up with the RTS craze. They died out because players moved on, not because their final entries were bad.

So yes, it is a valid question whether BoFV was a franchise killer or a game that just didn't sell for reasons other than its quality

I would argue that 4 actually killed the series. It's a full on ambitious entry in the series which gets bogged down at points but is overall a very competent but traditional jrpg, and it all but flopped. It has a few people who loved it, but even among the BoF fanbase there were many that liked 3 more. After that Capcom saw there wasn't a point in making another game like BoF4, so they slapped the name on whatever project eventually turned into Dragon Quarter to see if the name had any staying power but it didn't.

The bones of Dragon's Dogma could have and should have been a Breath of Fire game.

Even for the standard modern double-or-nothing contrarianism mindset, calling this game a "masterpiece" would be a major stretch. Which doesn't mead it's bad either; but the fan overreaction to the radical departure compared to its predecessors was both predictable and understandable.

Yes, like Dragon Quarter. Go away, contrarian faggot.
>>
>>12073780
Not him but Dragon Quarter is an awesome game, it's just nothing like the other Breath of Fires and never should have been marketed as one.

It's called autism. His mother probably should have held off mainlining Tylenol every time his father slapped her around for burning the chicken tendies.

Some of the ugliest character designs japan ever produced. For the first and only time in history of manga, anime and video games they created an unpopular catgirl.

Tatsuya Yoshikawa did the art for all Breath of Fire games. At least go back to worthless trolling about some franchise you actually have some experience with.
>>

This and Alundra 2 get more hate than they deserve.
>>
>>12073967
In a way they're on the same boat since they're solid games that are mostly dragged down by being underwhelming sequels. Though at least Dragon Quarter feels like it was always intended to be a BoF game and has plenty of proper ties to the series.
>>
>>12073967
>>12073974
I'd say the almost total lack of connection to the first Alundra is what redeems the second one. It's not unsatisfying as a followup because it's barely a followup at all.

Biggest pleb filter I tried. I couldn't "get it", it's system is very strange.

Nta but I doubt that would count as a counterargument; 4chan is very comfortable with the liberal usage of "artistic regression" to label any artist that changes their style in a way we don't like.

Curiously, Yoshikawa was probably the most dramatic example of artistic hard-swerves in Capcom artists. Famously he completely changed his illustration style for Breath of Fire III mid-development, to the point that some of the early spritesets that had already been completed look nothing like the final "designs" used in the promo illustrations.

Good puzzle game, not good JRPG.
It excels in this regard, but the issue is that JRPG piggies have certain expectations that are fundamentally at odds with puzzle game design mentality, despite that JRPGs find their basis in puzzle games to begin with.
>>
I'm torn on this game.
I beat it for the first time earlier this year and it's my favorite game of the series. But comparing it to other entries in the series, it doesn't really feel like a BoF game.
>>
>>12073489
>There's plenty of counterexample; solid games that sold poorly because their franchise or style of game had run its course and was no longer popular.
Yeah like the Might and Magic series. Solid final game, died because the studio went bankrupt.

No that's if you called Infinity SaGa a masterpiece. You only need to be a little contrarian for DQ as people liked it at the time, they just thought it was way too different and therefore wasn't what they wanted.

He got off his leash, his work in BOF2 was fine but he was tethered to other artists designs. 3 was passable and 4 was slipping a bit. At 5 he went off the rails pushing his own hideous gremlin style and these androgynous subhumans he drew.

Years later he went back to making decent looking characters, as he would have starved if he kept up the shit he produced for BOF5.
>>
>>12075640
It's really sad when talented artists simply lack the discerning objective taste of the average entitled consumer.

He also did the art for Megaman X8 if you ever wondered why the characters looked so "off" in the art for that game.

The average consumer thinks Gundam SEED is a good show so fuck em
>>
I have yet to play IV, but I played the first three games and I loved all of them so I'll certainly love it too. BoF is already my favorite JRPG franchise.

III has the best dragon transformation system so far. It's basically perfect with the gems and customizations.

Left character somehow spawned so much porn back then, i guess she was better than the actual game.
>>
>>12073497
At least it's better than Xenogears

>Left character somehow spawned so much porn back then
wut?
She got a few pages in a single anthology in comiket 64 (2003). BOF V only got like 3 doujins in total over 22 years and she was ignored in all of them save a few pages mentioned previously.

She had very little art from japanaese artsits aside from DR P, and even that was like 2008 or so.
Pic related is one of the few times any japanese artist ever bothered to draw her before the late 2000s, and it was a one-off BOFV pinup.
Japanese didn't just ignore her, they ignored this whole game.
