>>12074024>What homebrew / hacks are you playing /vr/?I've played FFV a bunch already, so my latest four job fiesta I tried the "Clean Edition" romhack, which is basically a comprehensive QOL/bugfix/upgrade hack that, in the base version at least, maintains the original mechanics of the game. There are different versions available, some of which rebalance stats and equipment sets and generally make the game easier for zoomers, but since I was doing a fiesta I didn't want any of that shit.Overall it was really great. There's a new menu font I really like, and it includes new overworld sprites so characters wear their jobs out of battle, too. It's also got a revision of the 1997 RPGe fan translation, and while I think I still prefer the GBA translation overall, this one does some really nice things, like fleshing out certain NPCs, and even naming some of Faris' pirates after Biggs, Wedge, and Piet. There were a handful of really annoying bugs, though, so I reported them to the developer and hopefully they will be addressed. The worst one was that the ending completely freezes, lol.
>>12074024i want to make a rom hack about hong kong 97 that turns the game into a sidescroller, i have that written on my bucket list of ideas.
>>12074686do you have a mockup of how it might look?
Anyone know where I can learn about rom hacking GBA games? I have a dream about a sci-fi dungeon crawler. Mech suit like in the movie alien or avatar, salvaging wrecked space ships and surviving the horrors that lurk within. I don't want to do a jrpg style, but something more reactive. Likely top down or isometric. I'd also love to hear suggestions for the game I should hack from too!
>>12075083It'd be simpler to develop something new from the ground up. The GBA is one of the easier consoles to work with.
>>12075095Interesting. Okay, what are some good resources I could look into? I'll check YouTube obviously, but anything helps
>>12075108There's a whole tutorial on it here: https://gbadev.net/tonc/

>>12075123Wow thanks man, this is out of my depth right now but this is good. This art should not come easy. The endless tide of slop must be held back in some way.

>>12074527Thanks. Going to replay 4-6 when my ayn thor gets in
I like the color changes but if they kept the original songs and introduced spin dash they would be better
>>12077812this looks really good
win95/98 dev counts as homebrew, right?what software can get that mid-to-late 90s midi sound? even better, what midi composition software did actual gamedevs use back in the day?
>>12079521Midis are midis, you just want to use some era-appropriate soundfont and maybe record it as an mp3 played back through some era-appropriate sound card.
>>12074024>What homebrew / hacks are you playing /vr/?I'm playing Full Quiet on the NES again. I've cleared all the game except for the Crags boss twice now, it seems to be where I get stuck and can't quite finish. It's a pretty neat game though, you have some degree of freedom on how you tackle the world. When you first play it, the "natural" route is to go from the Plateau -> Crags part 1 -> Field part 1 -> Swamp -> Logging -> Forest -> Cliffs, but you can actually go to Cliffs right from the start if you know where the entry to it is and then do most of the game in reverse or some combination of them. Nothing really stops you from just struggling to go through some parts though, and a lot of the game's pathing is simply hidden on your first playthrough and nothing stops you from using it if you know it's there.
>>12079369Is there anything decent from that contest this year? Seems that they were more obsessed about glorifying someone's suicide (this was the bridge jumping kid from Twitter) than promoting their event.
>>12080280Not a lot of modern 2D (Mania etc) or 3D this year. Mostly Genesis hacks this year.
