>get into emulation
>decide on no full romsets but basically anything that looked even slightly interesting or in a genre I like I grabbed
>get addicted to free games and the dopamine hit of making my collection larger for nothing
>end up spending more time downloading and looking up cool games than playing them
>check out libraries for consoles Ive never even touched like saturn and neo geo and download all the classics
>end up with literally thousands of roms before I finally decide I have enough
>now I cant decide what the fuck to play because I have too many choices and dont even know where to start
>end up scrolling through a fuck huge list of games and trying different shit out for 30 minutes at a time but rarely find something I want to stick with

how do you guys deal with this? what are your absolute favorite rpg/action/platform games from gens 3-5 that I should play NOW?
>>
Just play -a- game, retard.
>>
Are you the same bot behind that awful Raiden II thread? Kill yourself

>>decide on no full romsets but basically anything that looked even slightly interesting or in a genre I like I
>played one at a time to completion if I didn't get bored with it
fixed that for ya

Stop watching porn.
I'm serious.
>>
>pick a generation
>pick a genre of game you like
its that easy. if you like 2d platformers do snes and play through dkc's and marios. if you like jrpg's pick ps1 and final fantasies. rinse and repeat until you've played all games ever made.
>>
>>12075584
Instead, make a list of games then obtain one at a time and play through as desired. Keep your library small.

Welcome to analysis paralysis, buddy.

I just download the game I want to play and play it.
>>
Use original hardware like people who actually PLAY the games, not digital file hoarding emulator posers
>>
>>12075584
I have a chronological list of games and play the next game on the list. If I dont want to play that game ill play something else instead. I posses willpower and can employ it... at will.
>>
>>12075584
So you admit you stole 1000's of games?
>>
>>12076526
He duplicated them, increasing humanity's overall wealth.
>>
>>12076526
It's not stealing. Who did he steal them from?
>>
>>12076531
I like this and I’m stealing it

This

Also this. I find it best when you play on actual hardware, flash carts/burned copies are fine but limit your selection. Either remove games from the SD card and leave only a few you're interested in or burn 1 copy of a game and play that until you've completed it or decide it's not worth playing.
>>
>Choose a game randomly (use a random number generator if you have to)
>play the game
>if you play for a while and the game doesn't feel engaging or interesting, quit and delete the file
>if the game is "okay" at best but you still feel compelled to beat it, do it and then delete the file
>keep only the games you thoroughly enjoyed and try to keep as few of them possible
>only what you really enjoyed, no more than a few dozen
>never play anything else anymore

There. This is how you minimize time wasted playing games that aren't really worth it and can use the rest of your free time to do some exercise or learn something useful.
>>
>>12076526
He should give them back to 1000.
>>
>>12075584
ive beaten this by just choosing a game beating it. like irl i wouldnt have the money to get new games. so i gotta play what i got. i mean if it legitimately sucks then ill move on. but if its good then ill beat it. beaten alot of snes games and ps1 games like this
>>
>>12075584
I sorted everything by year and just went chronologically. Sometimes within a system/genre, sometimes just all over the place. You can also watch anime/shows from that year for extra immersion
>>
>>12075584
I keep complete rom sets on flashcarts for most consoles, and tons of isos for odes. I used to have this problem but then decided that I was going to make it a point to beat at least 50 games I've never beaten a year. It's year four and I've beaten anywhere from 70-110 each year. I play games to beat them, and I go out of my way to play ones I've heard good things about. Not just retro, but newer games too. I beat game 79 a few days ago, and I'm hoping to beat 100 again this year. Next up is SMT3 Nocturne.

Look up game magazines on Archive.org for the specific system you wanna play. Read through them and find some cool stuff and hype yourself up about it.

That's the appeal and the true retro way to do it.

Get stuck? Find the GameFAQ guide to just get a hint but don't actually use it fully, just to get yourself back on track. Only use these if you're trying to 100% stuff like Skultellas in OOT or Majora's Mask

Play arcade roms but every credit you put a real quarter on a jar
>>

Plastic coomlectors don't tend to actually play the games either, they just display them next to their funko collection
>>
>>12078665
Good suggestion. There are also Japanese restrospective overviews of console's libraries, for a tighter focus.
>>
I just feel bored and impatient with every game I try now. I'm tired of downloading stuff only to instantly delete it
>>
>>12075584
Don't play any game, until you get a desire to play some specific game

Maybe this site is just an insane asylum

>end up scrolling through a fuck huge list of games and trying different shit out for 30 minutes at a time but rarely find something I want to stick with
That's why emulation is soulless. Get a real hardware setup and buy games and you will play them. The feeling of getting your monies worth is strong you won't drop a game in 5 mins. ROMS are worthless and there is always something else you could be playing right now so you do.

Someone will say no! it doesn't matter and blah blah blah. The only thing that matters is how your brain ticks and what is satisfying and what isn't.

Sincere question
Do I even like video games if the only way I can force myself through one is by sunk cost
>>
>>12079003
I love video games.
>>
There is no value in games you don't pay for
>>
>I cant have fun without losing money first!
paypigs are really something else man
>>
>>12079013
It just helps you not drop a game at the first slow part.
>>
>download ffta because i love the art and liked it as a kid but never beat it
>get past the first herb quest
>shut it off and just lie in bed staring at the ceiling because that's somehow more fun

I just want to play games
>>
>>12075584
Try Retroachievements. I'm a subhuman retard that can't make myself finish games without a digital trophy.
Maybe it'll help you too.

I browse old magazine scans and look for games I used to play, games I rented or owned, games I never got to play, games I dont remember at all, critically acclaimed games, the dark horse game that seems good, the bad games, and anything the ads or reviewers made look interesting. or, just check out guru larry, retrovania or other youtube channels and play something that looked sweet
>>
>>12079017
something in your brain is telling you to do something else before you get back to games
>>
>>12079003
literally yes

you cant force yourself to enjoy something, regardless of how much money you spent.
