Man, I don't think I really realized until now how much better this is than the N64.How is there even a discussion? N64 has maybe 15 truly great games, but Playstation has like more great games than the entire library of the N64.Obviously quality over quantity, but I even with that in mind I still think PlayStation wins out.Like if you were locked in solitary confinement forever, but had a choice between a PS1 and it's entire library and the N64 and it's library, is it even a question between the two?
okay
shitty console war thread
>>12077839>>12077848I guess I didn't phrase my thread right. Why the fuck did it do so much better? Obviously the square debacle caused them to drop N64 development but why did every single develop worth a shit develop for ps1 while N64 had basically only Nintendo and Rare?
>>12077852Cartridges were stupid expensive and did little for the actual game compared to CDs. Even Mortal Kombat Trilogy had to be compressed to fit on an N64 cart.
>>12077856Then why cartridges? Anti-piracy?
>>12077865Oh yeah forgot to put that in my post, but yes, it did little for the actual games beyond anti piracy. (And obviously that was always just a stopgap before people figured shit out like always). People will say "faster loading times", but that was purely incidental for what Nintendo was doing.
>>12077865The real reason is not piracy It's just that Nintendo make tons of money manufacturing cart and they didn't want to loose that huge profithttps://automaton-media.com/en/news/capcom-veteran-says-nintendo-was-the-only-one-making-steady-revenue-from-nes-game-carts-capcoms-profits-really-took-off-with-the-ps1/
>>12077852better multiplayer games, 4 controller ports, better graphics, it had fucking mario and dk
>>12077920Nintendo has always been cartoonishly greedy and evil.
>>12077838You’re completely right, but this board is full of Troontendo drones.
>>12077838The highs are higher with the N64
>>12078014Even one for one, I'd take PS1 over N64. Any number of hand picked PS1 games would entertain me better than that many of the very best N64 games. I'd take 100 PS1 games over the entire N64 library.
idk. The playstation kind of has an illusion of variety in a lot of regards. Just because there's a lot of games on it, doesn't mean you necessarily want to play them.>don't you want to play 50 near identical JRPGs?No, actually. I have yet to fully play through even one of those games.>don't you want to play a survival horror game that isn't RE1 or 2, and kind of sucks actually?nah. Like, maybe for ten minutes, just to try it>don't you want to play some sidescrollers that ultimately aren't as good as stuff that came out in the 16 bit era?Ehhhh...
The most baffling thing with the PS1/N64 comparison is that despite being on paper more powerfull than the PS1Most of the multiplat are significatly better on PS1 with much better framerate and a cleaner image
>>12078027Look up top lists for both systems (we didn't call them "consoles" in the 90s) and you'll see PS1 has a lot more with deep mechanics you can sink your teeth into. N64's is comparatively shallow.
>>12078040n64 uses more advanced graphics rendering at the expense of performance
>>12078042>we didn't call them "consoles" in the 90swutYes we did.
I had both consoles, because I wasn't poor.
>>12078042And yet all I want to play on Playstation is Crash Bandicoot, and maybe some some shmups or arcade style games(which were largely ports). Maybe some "quirk-core" game like LSD.I mean, it's alright. But this idea that the Playstation is just wall to wall classics is maybe over stated. No one ever actually plays all of those JRPGs (they're boring).
>>12077838As the years go on and the shimmer of M64 and OoT slowly fade this becomes even more obvious. Hell I would take the Saturn library over the 64.
>>12078132The Saturn is just a bunch of contrarian options that no one ever actually plays.
I dunno, I just played through MGS after having played Twin Snakes, and boy oh boy, without any nostalgia, that game is rough.I really like MGS as a series and I love all the little touches despite the rough edges, but the Disc 2 portion of the game was rough. The final few boss fights against REX, Liquid, and then the jeep chase were a headache. I kept failing not because I didn't know what to do, but because of jank, especially that liquid fist fight. less about skill and more about repeating the same rigid sequence over and over while accepting horrible hitboxes. I was an N64 kid growing up and none of the games I loved ever had moments of frustration like MGS gave me.
>>12077838Nintendo had almost two decades of brand power. That mattered. Parents who wanted to surprise their children on Christmas/birthdays instinctively chose the brand power they knew. Pokemon really helped boost that brand power, and STILL does. That being said, The PS1 had everything going for it starting with the games being cheap, and how you got a demo disc with magazines. Develoeprs loved it ebcause 700 Mb discs are a better format to work with than 32 and 64 Mb carts. Little details like that really helped it.
Why do Playstation fans obsess over other consoles so much? Lots of anti-N64 and anti-Saturn threads started by PS fans.Just go play your gorillion games instead of always obsessing over the other consoles.
>>12077870They partnered with Sony to make the Nintendo Playstation dude. Sony supplied the disk drives. When that relationship fell apart Sony took everything they learned and released their own playstation and Nintendo had to start over from scratch on a new system. And they didn't trust any other manufacturer to supply a disk drive to partner with so they stuck to carts that THEY could manufacture themselves. And that's why the N64 released a year/year and a half later than playstation and Saturn.
>>12078162MGS is mostly designed like shit, horrid gameplay and frustrating level design. Konami had better 3D stuff on N64.
>>12077838Console warring is a >>>/v/ thing, since it's filled with tendies, the most autistic fanbase (even worse than snoys, it's not even close actually).PS1's library is more rounded, but the N64 is very good at some genres and it's a very interesting option for multiplayer experiences with friends.
>>12077838>Like if you were locked in solitary confinement forever, but had a choice between a PS1 and it's entire library and the N64 and it's library, is it even a question between the two?Fair enough, but as someone who owned both plus saturn back when they were still getting games, the 64 blew away anything related to multiplayer that involved more than two people. It really was the party console.
>>12078209"HEY SONY WANNA HELP US DEVELOP A NEW CONSOLE" ended up being the costliest mistake Nintendo ever made. >>12078216All I know is Nintendo sold the Gamecube as the "multi-player party" console to play various games with friends. That didn't sit well with social-anxiety-disorder gamers who preferred playing lengthy RPGs alone in the dark.
>>12078024>hand picked bestwhat do you rec?Hard mode: no MGS, SotN, Spyro, FF
>>12077852because MUH NINTENDUHsame reason people go to mcdonalds everyday or drink corn syrup everydaytheyre stupid they did a good job with the few games that they worked on though, I will give em that. too bad they sucked at releasing more than 4 - 7 good games though
>>12078042>PS1 has a lot more with deep mechanics you can sink your teeth intoFuck no. Especially not if you're looking up top 10 lists.
>>12077838N64 had multiplayer baked into to almost every game and the system came w 4 slots for controllers. It was a party system that worked so well, even 22 year old white girls in 2025 still start talking shit about Mario kart 64 when they get drunk. So while I love me some psx, it just didn’t have the last cultural footprint for most likely the reasons outlined above. “Remember that one awesome time in ff7…. Yeah we all did that” where as “remember that one time we kept flipping Jimmys kart on rainbow road so he couldn’t finish the race and just left the house cursing about horse cum or something? And then we played for 10 more hours after, ah yea good times”One of those memories is going to have a lasting and very different impact.
>>12077838It was the true SNES 2. Nintendo went off the rails that gen but thankfully Sony was there to swoop in and save us from their idiotic obsession with piracy. (cartridges in 1996 lol)
>>12078386>Especially not if you're looking up top 10 listsWhy would I be looking at that.
>>12078418>thankfully Sony was there to swoop inYeah, I don't now what I'd have done without 30 second load times every 30 seconds.
>>12078435>I don't now what I'd have done without 30 second load times every 30 seconds.Doesn't happen.
>>12078439Only a slight exaggeration.
>>12077838PSX did what Nintendidn't.
>>12077852Because Sony did their homework and offered developers good deals, easy hardware to work with, way more freedom in unit printing, etc. Add that to the fact that most 3rd party devs already disliked Nintendo due to their policies, and it's no wonder that most companies jumped ship the second they could.
>>12077838>Man, I don't think I really realized until now how much better this is than the N64.I'd argue conversely that the N64 is the ONE console that really holds up against the Playstation. Against everything else, it sweeps the floor cleanly because of its enormous variety of actually great games to which there is no comparison in any other library. But the N64 is the one thing where its best dozen peaks so hard that it outshines even something with hundreds of good to great titles.>Like if you were locked in solitary confinement forever, but had a choice between a PS1 and it's entire library and the N64 and it's library, is it even a question between the two?Yes. The N64 has games that are so well made that I'd legitimately pick playing variations of them, and them alone, for the rest of my life, over everything else, were the alternative to be denied playing them.>>12078027>don't you want to play 50 near identical JRPGs?Agreed. There exist RPGs that are good, but it's a mostly time wasting genre that is utterly style over substance in the worst ways. I don't care how many of them there are when so few even try to have good gameplay.>don't you want to play some sidescrollers that ultimately aren't as good as stuff that came out in the 16 bit era? This is the one area where the PS1 actually, truly mogs hardcore. The Playstation had the best selection of 2D platformers of any console, hands down. It outright rapes everything besides possibly the peaks of the SNES, SEGA isn't even in the competition here as the best Megadrive titles that aren't Sonic are just slop, and Sonic is only so good.
>>12078317Gran TurismoAce Combat 3Tekken 3Bloody Roar 2Megaman X4Einhander A plethora of RPGs and TRPGKlonoaThe Shiphon Filter trilogySilent Bomber
>>12077852Better question. Why did EVERYTHING turn to shit in the 90's? Music, movies and video games all took a nose dive in quality after 1992. Why? Because the Jews teamed up with an evil alien race that came from a black hole calling themselves the Niggaryans and together they hatched a plan to rid the universe of the white man once and for all. The plan is to destroy all entertainment and make their women so unappealing that white men kill themselves.
Intendo partnered with Philips before they even partnered with Sony and Intendo screwed Philips over two.At that point in time, Sony and Philips were by far the two biggest CD drive manufacturers in the world.
>>12077838With how cheap it was to develop for, how much storage was available, and the low cost of manufacturing, anyone could make any weird and experimental title they wanted to.
>>12078418>It was the true SNES 2Nobody fucking believes this shit. PlayStation did everything the SNES tried but 1000 times better. It was also far more similar to Mega Drive in many important ways. PlayStation fans aren't SNES drones. Stop trying to make it happen.
>>12078716The schizo SNES hater is back
>>12078716SNES-CD / Nintemdo Playstation had the same CPU as the SNES, same basic architecture, etc. PSX was so far ahead. Nintendrones BTFO!
>snesdrones snesdrones!lmao this guy is in other threads throwing the same tantrums
I only had the PS1 and at the time I always wondered how fun the 4 player games on N64 were, but for single player games I never felt like I was missing out on not playing the Zeldas etcI guess they were the most "open world" games people had before GTA3, but I was very happy with all the single player games I hadI'm not sure what are the proper names for the genres are but let's just focus on action/adventure games, exclude platformers and sports/racing, and include any theme (like horror or whatever):- Tenchu 1- Syphon Filter 1-3- Soul of the Samurai- Resident Evil 1-3- Silent Hill- Jackie Chan Stuntmaster- Castlevania SotN- many more I can't remember right nowIt's prob dumb to compare these to N64 Zeldas but whateverAnd I put Tenchu first there because it's a really underrated game, it's the first game I can think of that let you climb on roofs and stuff, the first 2 levels are so open and full of houses to climb
These retarded threads are why nobody uses this board to talk about games anymore.
>>12078716>Nooo, the CD JRPG slop machine is not a successor of the Cart JRPG slop machinelol>It was also far more similar to the Mega Drive lmao
>>12078892You could have 8 player some PS1 games with two multi-taps.
>>12078495Konami and Treasure were doing better stuff on the Megadrive than Sonic.SNES is just wall to wall good sidescrollers. Where do you even start? Super Metroid, Castlevania 4, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Hagane? Even the licensed games can be pretty top tier, what with Super Star Wars, Aladdin, and so forth.
everything that isnt a turn based jrpg or 2d game has aged like putrid milk. I was a squaresoft fanboy growing up so I highly preferred the ps1 but if im in the mood for something that isnt turn based Ill gladly play one of the 15-20 great 64 games over the thousands of shovelware ps1 slop.
>>12078408>N64 had multiplayer baked into to almost every game and the system came w 4 slots for controllersLaunch titles: Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64, two games without multiplayer.
I wish I wasn't a zoomer
>>12078519fuck off dad
>>12078014This. I'd take almost any three first party nintendie 64 games over 90% of the PS1 library. Star Fox, Mario Tennis and Majora's Mask alone have more depth and polish than most PS1 shovelware.>>12078162>oh boy, without any nostalgia, that game is rough. You just described like 90% of the PS1 library.
The n64 roms take up less space on my hard drive than the ps1 stuff. So n64 wins
>>12078519what makes this thread special enough to warrant this?
>>12077838Yeah, I realized a while back when I started playing through some of the PS1 games I hadn't checked out yet. The N64 was Nintendo's worst /vr/ home console by far.>>12078014They really aren't
>>12078418Cartridges should have stayed the standard so that game tech advanced slower. We would have gotten the advantages of CD regardless anyway in due time on carts, like full motion video.
I genuinely just can't find anything on ps1 I like as much as n64. The ps1 has a better larger library but when I sit down to play a game from this time its n64. The Zelda games punch so far above their weight class for me its insane
Paper Mario > Final Fantasy
>>12078014this series alone blows any N64 crap out of the water
>>12079356I'm a zoomer. I can't do ps1 jrpgs
>>12077838That's cool and all and I'm happy for you or whatever but the N64 is still better.
>>12077838That's cool and all and I'm happy for you or whatever but the N64 is still shit.
too bad some nerd doesn't port the entire library.
>>12078162that's a long post just to say you're bad at videogames and a brand loyalist
