Are these games unfairly hated? For some reason, I’ve always seen Gex thrown in the same trash bin as Bubsy, but honestly these are not bad games. My only real gripe is with the first one, because it seems like they tried to do a momentum platformer a la DKC but the run feature just doesn’t work great. It’s also extremely punishing with Gex’s hitbox being enormous. It’s still an alright time though.
2 and 3 are legitimately fun collectathons.
And the humor? I found most of the jokes land, and the ones that don’t are carried by the sheer absurdity of the voice acting and delivery.
All in all, I like this gecko.
>>
Gex's games are all good to great honestly. I agree that he's really unfairly globbed together with Bubsy who had one mediocre game and nothing but crap afterwards. I love the gecko too.
>>
They're not bad games, the third is even pretty good. They certainly weren't hated at the time.
Ironically, the problem is what made Gex interesting in the first place.
Filling his voice lines with jokes and jabs about ongoing, real world events was a lot of fun when those events were current. But 30 years later those references all fall flat, and his iconic quips are now a barrier for any would-be-new players.

Gex may be the only justified example of a game that "aged" poorly.
>>
bros why can't i beat the 3rd game at all? I beat gex 1 and 2 but i just lose interest playing the 3rd one. My favorite one 2 and i always play it every year. Does the 3rd game get better?
>>
>>12078515
I can play for about 3 minutes before needing to mute the game.

It is an okay platformer with the wall crawling gimmick.
>>
>>12078515
1 is alright, it gets repetitive. 2 is alright too but the reused level themes get repetitive as well. 3 is very good and shows Crystal Dynamics figured out their groove with Gex.
>>12078712
Where did you drop the third one? I only think two levels are kind of weak. The greek one and the anime one. Most of the game is great and it only gets better as you progress.
>>
>>12078515
I don’t think anyone really lumps them in with Bubsy. Bubsy is like his own category.

>Are these games unfairly hated? For some reason, I’ve always seen Gex thrown in the same trash bin as Bubsy
I have never seen gex spoken of similarly to bubsy, when gex is mentioned the worse criticism lobbed at it is being a stiff psx platformer which is fair, the media dimension setting is seen as a pretty cool showcase of the psx.
>>
All gex needed was like a sidekick, good music, less cringy enemy types.
>>
>>12078961
He has a non playable sidekick(atleast 2+ his own hoe).
The series has good music(Gex1 title screen and Gex3 anime channel are my personal favorites, but 3 has a bunch of fun ones)
No idea what you consider "cringy" enemies. They were all on-brand for the series humor or worlds.
>>
1 is fucking hard, brutal ass game. Those Planet X levels are obnoxious!
>>
Gex's reputation comes from people who never played the games and judge them by memes the and outdated comedy. They're all fine games, sold well too. Don't know why they didn't really do anything with the franchise after 3
>>
>>12078987
What could you really do with him after that? I know with about 26 years passed they can think of any idea at this point, but immediately after, I'm not sure. I know Gex Jr. was attempted but went nowhere though.
>>
>>12078987
Crystal Dynamics got Soul Reaver and later Tomb Raider to work on.
>>
>>12078987
Mascots were basically dead by the early 2000s, aside from a couple legacy institutions like Mario and Sonic, no kid wanted to play a game with some rejected cartoon character when they could play Halo and feel cooler and more mature with a gun game.

Gay post. Who gives a shit about young people and new players, I still don't understand like 40% of the shit he says but it's still charming to me.
>>
>>12079252
There were a bunch of games and series involving "mascot" characters after that. They just stopped making Gex, for some reason.
>>
>>12079296
Yeah, but they were seen as uncool childish shit. No one wanted vexx or blinks when they could just convince mom to buy them halo and gta

>Who gives a shit about young people and new players
Companies who want to sell a product, like Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix/CDE and Gex.

>Are these games unfairly hated?
I don't think they're hated? Sure, people might hate Gex himself who never shuts up (and a ton of people these days probably won't get most of references Gex spits out, so to them it just sounds like a mass of bad jokes), but I don't think people hate the games themselves. At worst people might hate camera and some jumping momentum when it comes to gameplay.
I played all three games and for me personally it's something like 2 > 1 >= 3
1 starts out fine but from the third world and onwards it's like devs were almost out of budget so suddenly there are less levels per world now and only Horror TV and Toon TV were good. Planet X is the best part of the game because it's full of (mostly) short levels that just play around some gameplay concepts (like one short level where the entire point of it is to cross OHKO pits by tail bouncing on enemy heads).
2 is my favourite because main menu is memorable, hubworld is fun to explore and has cool aesthetics, music is actually nice, 3D platforming isn't horrible (compared to many other 3D platformers from that time), good balance of collectibles (silver and gold remotes) that doesn't go overboard and levels are mostly about platforming itself with minimum amount of gimmicks (only Circuit Central and Rocket Channel have them). My only big complaint is four Scream TV levels and three Pre-History Channel levels (while every other channel sticks to two) - some Bonus level themes should've gotten those 2-3 level spots instead.

As for 3 - I might as well reply to >>12078712
I dislike 3 way more than 2 because
>fucking tutorial butler is everywhere and never shuts up (reminds me of Spyro and Medievil sequels that also added annoying sidekicks who never shut up)
>game looks visually worse than 2 (maybe just aesthetics, but I do feel like it's more plastic than 2)
>collectathon galore (intentional by devs because they wanted to copy Banjo-Kazooie)
>base collectibles went from golden fly (1) to level-themed ones (2) to golden fly again (3) - weird but okay
>every level (if I'm not mistaken) now has a fucking gimmick, even if gliding is the most common one
>did they cut composer's salary or something because 2 had four unique boss themes while 3 has only one theme shared between all three of them

>some levels are just too long and not fun to play through (looking at you, Anime Channel)
>why the fuck devs wanted to put more plot in Gex series is beyond me (and not like anyone cared because it was the last game anyway)
>>
>>12078515
Note to self: don't drink tap water at Jerry Garcia's.
>>
>>12078515
i only played the n64 3d one. it was alright. i liked the different level themes. my favorite was the kaiju themed boss fight.
i didn't like when they started reusing level theme ideas though. i think the final boss was kinda stupid and uninspired too but most 3d platformers at the time didn't have particularly great boss fights anyway.
