It was enjoyable despite its flaws

>immediately goes to shit afterwards

That second level where the cop comes to check on your apartment is so annoyingly hard because there bad camera angles and that really tight time limit.
>>
I wanted to be a contrarian because I had heard that the game goes weird in the middle (I wasn't sure why), and yeah, it absolutely jumps the shark.

>Starts interesting
>Becomes absolutely stupid
>DDR minigames near impossible and make it near impossible to pay attention to the cutscenes (not that they're any good because they're just guys doing DBZ shit)

My contrarian-ness still comes out though in that maybe I just missed something.
>>
The demo kinda put me off but the story seemed interesting. People didnt know the twist yet at the time. Never got it in the end. Looking back I'd rather have a story get batshit insane for no reason at all instead of wokeness BS from beginning to end.
>>
Atmosphere was great. There was nothing like it at the time in terms of presentation so its movie-game factor felt really fresh.
>>
>>12079617
>maybe I just missed something
You didn't.
Unless you want to dig into symbolism and such shit...
>>
>>12079602
It has a good start, but MAN, it gets exponentially more retarded as you go. In a funny way, but also a stupid way.

>>12079617
The only thing you missed is that David Cayge had really wanted this to have like, six additional episodes/expansions or something like that as a follow-on, but because this wasn't going to happen, he compacted ALL of those ideas and plot down into the single game. (Imagine taking something like the Lost TV show and trying to compact all of that down to 8 hours).

Thus, you get this completely unhinged acceleration in the narrative and plot where you keep going for really sudden and weird twists in a rapid fire fashion.
I don't think that the story and characters would have been particularly good if he had gotten to actually space out and pace the game in episodic releases as he had wanted, because the plot is still EXCEPTIONALLY retarded and messy, but it wouldn't have been this exhausting onslaught that it turns into.

>>12079847
It's an example of auteurism going stupid and off the rails.
It's a shitty story and shitty game, but goddamn it, David Keighe did all he could to try to realize his vision, no matter how demented, and that ultimately gives it more soul and character than the over-market-tested, bloated, and DEI checklisted AAA slop, which we've been seeing so much of for a while.

It's the same reason people have nostalgia for the Star Wars prequels, they really weren't good movies, but they were at least George Lucas's ideas.

I played this game during a heavy winter depression phase, what a ride it was.

That first stage in the dinner is still one of the best introductory levels in vidya on presentation alone. In a way it oversells the game to a degree it never gets to reach such heights again. Fun fact, Cage wrote a postmortem on the game and what he thought worked and what didn't, and it's an interesting read.

This game goes from 11/10 to 0/10 and then back to 11/10 but for the wrong reasons. The flying slap fight you have with the monk on a rooftop was one of the hardest times I ever laughed in my life from how stupid it was.

Also as much as the literal simon says shit was stupid, the bit where there's QTEs that you have to ignore (without the game telling you) to avoid raising suspicion was genuinely clever as fuck. David Cage was honestly really creative with QTEs, Heavy Rain and Detroit are basically the only games where I actually like how they're implemented.
>>
>>12080142
Yeah if you can get past the frustrating gameplay sections this is one of the funniest games ever made.
>>
>>12080113
I hope it brought you as much bewildered laughter as it has me.

>>12080142
Yep. If he was forced to share creative direction with someone else, maybe he could be forced to be just grounded and non-stupid enough that his games would actually work.

That's every David Cage game, even his previous work to Indigo Prophecy, Omikron, was like it
>oh wow a cyberpunk world ruled by despot who answers to corporations and lets a super computer dictate the people's laws that starts with the murder of your fellow cop
>no actually it's about spooky demons who want to steal the soul of the player because this isn't a videogame, this is real life!
>>

>no actually it's about spooky demons who want to steal the soul of the player because this isn't a videogame, this is real life!
Doesn't the game start with the first character breaking the 4th wall to tell you that's what the game is about? The game doesn't pretend like it's not going to get fucking stupid.
>>
>>12080864
>Doesn't the game start with the first character breaking the 4th wall to tell you that's what the game is about?
Sure, but I thought it was going to keep it quiet instead of almost every character being on the 'this isnt a videogame this is a portal to your dimension' along the other many other retarded narrative decisions
>the puzzle you have to kill yourself to advance the plot

They're brain dead easy. They do make it hard to see wtf is going on though.

Yeah Fahrenheit cloaked its stupidity way more, but it was always there. The raven and the hobo on the opening sequence are meant to represent the AI and the "invisibles" right away. The Lovers tarot card that Carma pulls even has a male figure (Lucas) having to decide between a woman in orange (the Orange clan) and a woman in blue (the Purple clan) whose hand glows on the man's heart (the AI reiviving Lucas).
It's all still incredibly stupid, but the story was clearly always meant to arrive at the same plot beats it did. We just expect better because it conceals the retarded foreshadowing better than Omikron did.
>>
>>12080875
Genuinely fantastic atmosphere
>>
>>12080134
Cage acting like it's an unexpected revelation that players would think the Tron shit is retarded never fails to amuse me. He just too high on his Matrix fandom to consider for one second robots don't belong in all stories, especially one about Mayan cults.
>>
I got filtered by that section where you jump and hold on to helicopter. For days I tried to get through that section but couldn't do it.
>>
>>12084790
That's the L/R button mashing, right? You can just change the difficulty for that section and it'll be easy. Same for the whole game, really.
>>
>>12084796
I did change and still couldn't get through it. Its only in THAT fucking section.
>>
>>12079602
Shit was so weird my memory of it is pretty hazy and scrambled.
Doesn't he ""die"" at some point late in the game but he's still walking around somehow. I think the love interest even slept with him and remarked that he felt cold.
>>
Daily reminder that this "game" got 83-85 on metacritic at the time of release and won best story of 2005 award from gamespot, but since that Zero Punctuation review everybody pretends it is the worst game of all time
>>

Have you actually fucking PLAYED the game? Have you even seen it? It has a good and strong opening but then awkwardly jerks you around for a while until the plot finally shits the bed completely and the game becomes utter nonsense.

It's enjoyable in a The Room kind of way in how it's impossible to take seriously (barring the start), really, it's a VERY funny game, but it's certainly not intentional, and its gameplay design isn't doing it any further favors here.
I can promise you that GameSnot gave it a high score because they didn't actually sit through all of it, they just trusted that it would keep up the quality from the beginning.
>>
>>12084861
>story of 2005 award from gamespot
The joke tells itself.
I don't care for le angry reviewer sketch but the point remains true, the story IS retarded. An illuminati mayan priest and a glowing robot AI race to hear the secrets of the universe from an autistic girl while shit gets cold IS as retarded as it sounds. It doesn't make this the worst game ever, but it does make it a retarded plot.
What makes it a bad game is the lack of gameplay. The game even calls itself a movie.
>>
>>12084861
Honestly the high praise from reviews together with how great the first half was (the sex QTE notwithstanding) just added to my disappointment in the second half. I'd probably have liked it more if it got more balanced reviews from the start, tempering my expectations a bit.
>>
>>12085064
Agreed, the other anon's comparison is spot on. If you watch The Room thinking it's the best movie ever you're gonna get very disappointed, but if you go into it expecting a so bad it's good flick you'll have a blast. Same with Fahrenheit.
