How much has /vr/ influenced your taste in retro videogames?
Have you found games that became your favourite ones thanks to this board?
>>
I lurk here to see what rom hacks people recommend.
>>
I now hate Nintendo even more than I used to
>>
I now pretend to like Sega even though most of their console libraries are shit i don't care about
>>
>>12079923
All my best gaming experiences from the last 6 years have been recs from based moon speakers / weeb sleuths on this board.
>>
No. No one knows anything about games on this board, lmao.
this is the "say some well regarded game is bad and try to make people mad for the 50th time this week" board.
A couple of years ago I started a series of threads specifically to try to get people to play games they hadn't played before, and then report back and talk about them, and all of these threads flopped.
>>
>>12080773
Probably because you didn't do enough to make me see the threads
>>
I got to play some sms and less talked gb/c games thanks to /vr/.
Can't say my tastes have changed ever since I started browsing this board.
>>
I stopped liking many of the games I thought I liked, people here convinced me.
>>
Not at all if I'm honest.
Every game I love is suddenly shit or "disappointing".
>>
I've been thoroughly convinced that everyone who talks about the Sega Saturn as if it "could've won" is one of two people
>1. Someone who bought a Saturn when it was new and will always be bitter about the PS1 quickly and hopelessly outpacing it in popularity, number of games, and quality of games
>2. Someone who overpaid for a Saturn and a bunch of physical games in modern times and is desperately trying to convince himself it is worth the money.
>>
definitely hasn't changed my taste in games but I did find what became one of my favorite games on this board: Goodboy Galaxy for GBA
>>
I'm trying to overwrite my actual childhood nostalgia because all the games I played as a kid are dogshit. So by playing the /vr/ games and reading peolples stories im hoping to brainwash myself and replace my own memories

I got some good unexpected recommendations here like Popful Mail for the Sega CD, or E.V.O.: Search for Eden for SNES, Popful Mail in particular was something I would have never discovered without /vr/ and I loved all the cute cheesiness of it, really good challenging game.

I'm not a purist, just ended up playing mostly retro games because my poorfag laptop couldn't run anything better than a PSX emulator when I was a student in 2012 lol, and sometimes when I get bored I check the board to see what people are talking about.
>>
>>12080773
This. Ive tried to do the same, here and on other boards, and they all wither. Maybe I'll get a few genuine replies.
>>
>>12079923
Appreciate pc88 and stuff like that now. Brought neo geo pocket and wonderswan before they get too expensive. People shitting on the speccy made interested in checking it out too.

>>12080828
I used to think that if more people saw stuff like Virtua On and how well it uses the VDP 2 then maybe it could have been more equal. Now I sort of see it as a Ps1 but with slightly less polygons, sure the difference was vastly overstated back in the day but even if its a small difference you'll still want to buy the one with the bigger number.
>>
I'd like to thank person posting "I am an air traffic controller" for DS
>>

>>12080773
You gotta find the secret sauce, I convince people to play games all the time. It's about focusing on the positives and supporting media. Making something interesting with clips or images does a good job of getting people playing.
>>
>>12079923
Not really. I'm still mostly interested in SNES-GameCube games and haven't branched out much within those generations. It's just easier to have a discussion here than it is on /v/. Sometimes it surprises me to see the obscure games that are talked about here.

I played Brightis thanks to /vr/ and it was great

/v/ circa 2007-2008 was all over Shatterhand too

These days I'm probably giving more recs than I am receiving
>>
>>12080761
tell us the games anon, share the wealth.
>>
>>12079923
I stopped using raw pixels and starting applying rgb filters and scanlines thanks to this board and games look incredibly better now.
>>
>>12082735
Scanlines matter a whole lot when sitting back and playing games on the TV, because they genuinely sharpen the image without making it look blocky. On PC, with you face close to the monitor, they end up often not giving the desired effect; the scanlines are too noticeable and it breaks the image apart rather than making it look sharp.
>>
I'll check out stuff that look appealing. but my taste hasn't really shifted. I've started to enjoy shmups more, but I already enjoyed them.
>>
>>12079923
No I was an adult by 1998 so nothing here influences my tastes whatsoever, I find most of the threads mildly disgusting, actually. 90 percent of my game time is done in silence with no internet anywhere around, exactly as it has always been for decades, air-gapped from your noxious cloud of circular gibberish that means nothing and goes nowhere. You don't even play old games, not really. You just look at a long list of roms and get bored.
>>

he posted on 4chan

>>12083627
damn, what aa fucking badass
>>
I refrained from playing Blood for years because I thought the art style was ugly. But you guys wouldn't shut the fuck up about it so I caved in and it was excellent.
>>
>>12080828
This. This board made me realize my friend who is a Sega Saturn larper is full of shit and probably posts here in all likelihood.
>>
As terrible as this board is there is always at least one thread up that recommends me a great game I've never heard of so I keep coming back
>>
>>12082778
thats a skill issue you can alter the size of the scanlines to match what youd see on a tv.
>>
>>12079923
Yes. A few years ago, dodon pachi was talked about quite a bit and I finally took the plunge after I beat aero fighters. I had no intention of getting into shmups, I was only beating aero fighters because as a kid I could never beat it at the local pizza parlor(round table) and I wanted closure. It was actually really great and had a few curve balls that were hilarious. So, I decided to see what all the fuss about dodon pachi was and it sucked me in immediately. I beat 1-3 back to back then played don pachi and in many ways I enjoy don pachi more as a trad shmup. Also parodious was mention here nonstop and it's as good as all the anons said. Hard as balls, but so fun and rewarding. Basically /vr/ helped me love shmups. Other games I love I picked up from /vr/:
>Elevator action returns
>Metal max series
>Under the root
>Daggerfall (not really,, but I was convinced to give it about shit and now I love it)
>>
>>12079923
You convinced me to try SotN for the first time last year, which in 1998 I dismissed as retarded platformer anime faggotry. I guess it still is, but I don't care. Man what a great game.

Also /vr/ has made me feel like some kind of Alpha God because I beat games at 8 years old that all of you shitters cry oceans of basedbeans about. Plus I take great pride in being the last human alive with an attention span that doesn't require dopamine injections every 2 seconds so I can enjoy pacing and quiet dynamics.

pity the zoom zooms

SEGA fags are just weird as fuck.

Like, the Megadrive was my first console, it was amusing to see Sonic run and play around with the mascot platformers, flight sims and racers like Micromachines etc. on it and playing through things co-op with my brother is something I have fond memories of, but as soon as I experienced other devices to game on, PC, Gameboy, Playstation and on it was clear how much better I could do and I just never looked back or paid much mind to it.

I just tried emulating a bunch of games on it recently, some I've played before and others I've told were the "real gems" of the system and it was basically like I remembered, they're mostly "amusing novelties" you might play to pass the time on a rainy day, not abysmal, but nothing you'd take any deeper interest in or particularly care about the design of.

Saturn games like Nights, Panzer Dragoon are not much different in my experience. I just don't understand what would drive someone to be obsessed with SEGA consoles or the idea that they totally could have been better than they were in particular. I mean, with a director like Yu Suzuki I can actually understand, he's a serious visionary and basically on another level to the other devs at SEGA, and they acknowledged this gap in competence themselves and understood how far ahead he was compared to everyone else. But I'd rather imagine what he could have done had he other great minds to play off somewhere else, rather than flounder at SEGA with a huge budget but no one else on his level to bounce shit off.

>>12080828
Saturnfags are just massive hipsters.
>>
i have 50 or so games saved but i cant say how many i downloaded because of /vr/
i like reading people talking about their favourite videogames though
>>
>>12079923
/vr/ gave me a much better appreciation of 2nd gen games
>>
>>12079923
I mostly use /vr/ to express my views, not be told by others. I enjoy reading what people have to say about games especially ones that are new to them. I probably never would have checked out worlds scariest police chases if someone didn't mention it here a decade ago. Still it's nice to see some people in this very thread who have taken a liking to games I've been posting about for years.
>>
There has been more than one occasion where I've posted about a super obscure game no one has ever discussed on here, only to see another person posting about it a week or so later. I always smile when that happens.

>>12082293
lol I also checked that game out.
>>
It hasn't influenced my taste. I'm a free thinker (also known by /vr/ as a "contrarian") and form my own opinions on games. I've found a few good recs here though if that counts for anything.
>>
>>12083920
>Metal max series
I discovered the series here and I'm loving the ds games
>>
>>12082731
Nemuru Mayu
Germs
Crime Crackers
Brightis
Mizzurna Falls
Garage
Idea no Hi
Maka Maka
Eldorado Gate
The original Gagharv trilogy
Rasetsu

Learning japanese has basically turned back time 20 years for me, making gaming a magical wonderland again.

>How much has /vr/ influenced your taste in retro videogames?
zero
>Have you found games that became your favourite ones thanks to this board?
i dont think ive ever played a retro game because of this board. i basically just replay the same games over and over and very rarely will play a new-to-me retro game.

4chan (including slow boards like this one) has been a low iq shitposting website for way too long now and if you still come here in hopes of having genuine discussion about stuff then you are doing it wrong
