Fighting games(not tournament fighters like MK or SF) like double dragon and bad dudes where you move left of right and beat guys up. Then the other one allows you to walk left, right, up and down. These are your belt scrollers.
some retard way back heard d&d players use the phrase hack and slash and misapplied it to action games. it was originally an rpg term for a type of campaign or session style where you just killed monsters and got loot.
