The NES has a few games I like, but honestly? It aged poorly.

Exactly. NES was the only system of it's generation worth anything. Genesis is what the kids actually wanted, gross and edgy. (SNES was the trusted brand that mother's bought) and the PSX was dark and adult driven. It was all a natural flow.

the obvious retro trinity is nes/snes/ps1. they were the most popular consoles by far and got the overwhelming share of third party support. whatever console got DQ and FF is the system japanese people cared about and japanese devs made games for, and no one besides japanese were making anything worth a damn. trying to cram genesis in there is laughable and so is putting ps2 above any of them, as it was the beginning of modern slop and will never be retro.

I agree that most of the library has aged poorly but the same is true for ps2, and theres 10x more ps1 games I still enjoy now than ps2 games. devs were far more creative and took more risks in 5th gen, a unique point in time where the types of games that were possible was far greater than 16 bit era but budget costs and dev times hadnt exploded too far yet. Im aware most casual fags like you just see a bunch of blocky polygons and think that makes a game unplayable thoughbeit.
