>Arcane Dimensions vs. Alkaline
I'd have to say they're both great after replaying each, but there are two maps that stick out and for different reasons: Slipgate Sickness and Tears of the False God.
They're concerning for different reasons. Slipgate gets overshadowed by all the other levels in terms of quality while Tears overshadows everything else. Slipgate at least feels more like a classic Quake techbase and is set aside as a secret level, Tears is on the first hub and very different from the rest of the maps regarding tone, aesthetics, and even gameplay.
Still fun levels, still raise my eyebrow.

You wish.
I always liked EmperorGrieferus the most, and when Nuked SC-55 emulator got released which is supposedly as close to the real sound as possible it only reaffirmed my choice, imo it's the closest one to the Nuked sound.

What would be really useful is doomwiki mentioning which sound module or soundfont was used by the composer.
So far you guys mentioned that Eternal used WeedsGM3, and Sigil (just like most? Paddock works) used RLNDGM which is basically just a Windows midi sound. And of course Booby Prince himself used SC-55 did he? I can't find the source.

What would be even MORE cool is if wads had the target/preferred soundfont mentioned in some lump. But that's not going to happen in my lifetime.

The way Alf made people here seethe was always funny even if his insane hatred of Half-Life was completely nonsensical. It didn't kill FPS, sprite based FPS was dead already and developers using advances in technology to make more narrative driven games was inevitable, if it hadn't been Valve with Half-Life it would've been someone else. It at least gave the threads someone to collectively despise besides Kaiser.

Is this meant to be like this, or is this because I'm using a sourceport? Kind of weird they just have a pre-completed realm like that.
>>
>>12082837
Depends. Do you like the movement and combat, but hate the tiny underpopulated maps?
Then yes, the mods you mentioned are Quake but bigger.
If you're just not enjoying the gameplay then no, those mods won't convert you because they're Quake but bigger.
>>
>>12082858
Nah, that's just how it is, even in the Kex port.
It is weird, though. Makes you wonder if they had a sixth realm planned but never finished.

Oh, and by the way, there's a secret level in DotM. The secret exit is in The Pain Drain (mge1m1).

So I loaded the Freedoom counterparts to the Doom 2 Wolfenstein themed secret maps. Kinda disappointed they didn't feature nazi enemies or unique textures.

Anyway, what's the lore of Freedoom? Is it literally just not-Doom in the same way Quake or Half-Life are not-Doom?

I'm a bit out of the loop - what happened to all the quake mapping activity of the last decade? Seems like a constant stream of quake maps and mods released from ~2015 (when I got back into q1) to ~2023/2024 and now nothing for months on end?
Even the speed mapping and other map jams seem to have stopped?
I saw some anons discussing slipseer but after checking it out I don't see much activity on their download archive or their forum, so mappers can't have just moved there.

Ok this actually has some color finally again. I've never listened to Nine Inch Nails but I am really not liking the music to Quake. Yeah... That or you make a point to shit up threads with your garbage whenever people who are trying to contribute show up. But yes, very clever strategy. Only problem is - archives exist and you already admitted to trolling "the" megaman "guy" and literally spammed one of the threads with anime and copypasta.

But I'm not gonna argue with you since that's what you want.
Instead I propose people who actually play retro fps post their favorite screenshots.

Check Ghosts I-IV out if you dig Trent's ambient stuff. It's a weird kitchensink of an album but there's some stuff there that feels like it's from the same cloth as Quake's ambient stuff, if taken in a new direction.

The Slip and the EP trilogy in recent years also have some nice choices, and during the pandemic he also released Ghosts V-VI.

I love how Quake informed my taste in music, and how a Quake IV OST bootleg made me listen to shit from all over the world.

I don't think this dude ever left. He gets wiped all the time and comes back same-day frequently, so obviously he's phoneposting and toggling IPs with airplane mode. I guess it's possible that he just gets entire ranges banned and eventually runs out of them, but they probably would've stayed banned longer than they did this time.

I think he goes through manic episodes for days or weeks at a time, and then gets burnt out and leaves until he regenerates his schizo mana and goes on another tirade.

One thing is for sure though, the last few threads did not have a single mention of the term "megaman", "megafaggot" or anything like that, so it's pretty clear that it is literally one single guy creating all of the drama.

i know you won't listen, but i feel it necessary to tell you anyway: this gen probably has like a few dozen dedicated users and a handful of lurkers who float in and out. 90% of the people who read anything you say already know what you're up to, we already know you're just being a fag and stirring up drama and playing both sides of the table. so, you're not actually trolling, you're just wasting everyone's time (primarily your own).

it's not interesting or funny anymore. you're not tricking anybody, you're not making anybody mad, there's no loosh to collect. you're just pushing your pink sock in and out rapidly while waving your hands and yelling at everyone to look at you. i know the whole "your le life must be sooo sad to le troll online..." is tired reddit nonsense, but it truthfully applies here. like, what the fuck are you even doing man? if you want to troll, at least do something funny and engaging and witty. go make OC like the floigan guy or some shit. regardless of what you think about those memes, that guy will be remembered forever, he left his mark, and he at least puts effort into his bullshit.

you aren't going to be remembered. you won't be ascending to the halls of trollhalla because 10 years from now, when you've finally exhausted this tiresome bait, anybody who could even possibly remember you will just think of you as "that guy who tried to samefag". there's no story to tell. no meme. nothing. in fact, your antics are so forgettable that it took somebody until like 3 threads ago to point out that you've been doing this for 10 fucking years already, but nobody noticed because your strategy has no wit. if you're going to waste the precious moments of your human life doing this, at least try to make it funny and memorable. food for thought.

ok I think the spammer is asleep or smth.
let's agree on some reasonable quick changes that somebody (probably not me but maybe me) can make to v9 that most people would be ok with.
so far here's what I got:

which means there's a spot in total conversions and to keep things symmetrical - one spot for 4chan's own mods and one for multiplayer maps. any ideas?

Turns out I'm a week behind, but just found out Mohrta's release date got announced. Oct 14.
Anyanon excited about this game? Maybe the demo gameplay was a bit basic and Doomlike, but fuck it, I love that art.
>>
>>12083751
>put mm wad in multiplayer
Nope. It's a total conversion first and foremost. V9 is fine aside from the shitty description in megaman and arguably mid descriptions for the other 2 wads but again the original descriptions are nothing spectacular either. At this point the latest version is 100% passable. If you want to add things to 4chan's mods etc - just do that, nobody (aside from the troll above me) will be against it, if it's done well.
>>12083759

And to add to the previous post, at this point it should be blatantly obvious that no update will be good enough for the shitter, so playing this game of trying to appease him only to have him spam the shit out of a thread with the another improved version is not very smart.
Just switch to using the new link, let him throw a bunch of fits and let the mods (hopefully) do their job of banning him. Definitely no point in becoming hostages to his will and infinite proxies.
And then if somebody wants to either build upon v9 or make something totally new - the new link guy will make adjustments. And if he doesn't, we'll find a new new link guy.

I really can't agree, I didn't like Blastocyst at all. The gimmick is worth a "huh, neat" once, but rapidly becomes irrelevant since aside from a few flying assholes all the shit you care about is down at ground level and the map boils down to being very flat with a funny sky. As a smaller component of a larger level it'd be fine, but it can't carry the whole map on its own.

Immensely dislike when mappers thoughtlessly abuse their tiles with narrowest windows for respite (pic not related), type of imposed fake difficulty this game could have. Bonus points for the guards in perpetual paranoid state, who would come running at you on the lightest creak.

There must be other annoying quirks of fan missions that I'm forgetting, but the tile floors are one of the worst ones.

I mostly prefer to crawl as normal when I can afford it, or use whatever I have left from moss patches generously. The hearing distance is about 6 meters for the loudest surface and when guards are relaxed. Tapping is good when you need to slip through somewhere quickly, but it's illogical from realistic simulation approach this game exerts forward, a sort of exploit you would not expect a beginner player to come up with.

Yeah I'm enjoying this way more than the base game. I don't know why I'm like this with Quake. I have never been able to finish Quake and I've tried once a year for like 5 years. I will casually play through most of Doom 1 and Doom 2 with gameplay mods all the time or load up Blood/Duke and give those a quick spin but Quake? Nope can't even give it a single full run-through. I forced myself to finish the first ep today but the maps just quickly bore the hell out of me. I don't mind the guns or the enemies. But it's the maps themselves that I just despise.

Maybe it's just the music all sounding really samey on top of the maps being very visually boring. Legit I think NIN on music was a mistake for Quake. Interesting and the quality is there but I just think the songs all sound the same and it makes the whole experience less fun than having some actual variety in music. I know that map Crucial I just finished was using a song from Quake but it was so much more bearable there since the map was at least very visually interesting.

I like Tears, but it's a rare good example of a modern Quake map. Most of those Slipseer guys only care about aesthetics, and put gameplay second (and even then they make the combat encounters more modern Doom or Serious Sam). They're too much of an echo chamber too, so nothing gets actual criticism and no improvements are made. Just look at Quaddicted - any and all maps from Slipseer get perfect ratings no matter what, because all their friends rush to give perfect scores.

Yeah I immediately was like - this isn't what I'm looking for. I think ID had better OSTs when they had less money to throw around. And some games are hard carried by the OST. Almost finished with the map, still only my trial run and I haven't recorded my demo yet, lol, but I'm certainly gonna because this map was good.

I already praised the visuals, but the gameplay is strong too. Just kinda ok/decent for the first half, but it ramps up pretty well as it goes, getting more varied, tough, and fun.
The map does not starve you for ammo, you're provided with healthy and ample ordnance for the jobs at hand (though I don't hate ammo starvation levels, Hell Beneath is one of my favorite iwad levels), and you can go full hog with rockets for most of the level.

I'm not gonna be beating the challenge time at all, that's for sure, but I'm glad I played this level, and I'll make sure to play this set in full some time.

I can't recall which games did this, but I'm 100% sure some did, most of the times it's used to demonstrate how your character's power level got increased, and accompanied by some (epic) cutscene before that. And of course it felt cool as hell every time, mowing hordes of enemies (bonus: who you struggled with the whole game).
Slaughter segments (let alone maps) rarely give you this feeling. Instead of a powerful hero you feel like a janitor.

Somewhat related, vidrel is not a slaughter, but I'll be damned if it wasn't satisfying as hell.

The posts above could indeed be one or two people instead of three but the longer delay makes it more likely it's genuine since what are the fucking chances two or three people are glued specifically to this thread at the same time?

you know you can have threads on auto, right? and if you have a bunch in tabs, you'll see a number pop up, indicating there's a new post. there'll also be a red dot if someone replies to you.
it's not necessarily a case of someone sitting there staring at this thread. I've had this general open for years in a tab and click onto it whenever a new post hits as I mainly lurk.
I was one of the people that complained about the megaman hijack attempt and got called a samefag. whatever.

I actually like Quake more. I'll try and sum up why I love it:
The music is fantastic. You'd think being an FPS it'd have a metal soundtrack, but the ambient, almost Silent Hill style stuff you get instead sells the atmosphere of an evil otherworld to you
The monsters also help with the atmosphere, because they feel weird. There are almost no traditional monsters shooting bullets or fireballs at you, it's all melee, weird homing magic, bouncing grenades and lighting.
The weapons are neat too. I love the nailgun, it's such a cool alternative to a machinegun. What better way to fight otherworldly monsters than rapidly driving metal spikes through them?
The verticality also helps, maps can technically do more than Doom levels, although admittedly you need to play mods to see it.
Quad Damage is 10/10 and reminds me of Pac-Man when you gain the ability to eat the ghosts. Suddenly you have a minute of being a death machine and it's a lot of fun.

I never said that. There are some anons that are like "yeah sure, that could work in the image, but maybe the description should be changed a bit" and so on, but there is one unhinged person that would constantly go on and on about it. remember how someone made a point of there never being conversation about the mod until they came came along. and then we started seeing different internal resolutions pretending to be different posters yet the screenshot res was the same lol. Or it was something like that. and don't forget about all the multiplayer rooms that were filled with bots, showing that it wasn't popular at all, therefore didn't belong on the image.
>Or at least he only gets banned but never wiped and has a billion vpns or something.
you've always got an answer like this and sound idiotic.
so I'll ask you again, show me how you'd like me to prove I'm from the UK and I'll do it. I don't suppose it matters anyway because the mod is there on the image now - yes, I saw it before imgur blocked UK access at the end of last month.

True.

I was in that thread and I don't think the guy was pretending to be multiple people at all.
Also guess what? A ton of multiplayer mods are empty now because it's been years. If we started deleted wads from the pic because they are unpopular we'd have 5 left.
>you've always got an answer like this and sound idiotic.
What exactly is idiotic? Do you not see that all the anti-mm posts have the exact same writing style and general message?

>I don't think the guy was pretending to be multiple people at all.
I know. that's what we're arguing about.
>If we started deleted wads from the pic because they are unpopular we'd have 5 left.
Surely the logic follows then - you wouldn't want to ADD a new mod to the image that had no multiplayer life. Isn't that reasonable? An anon was posting shots of the rooms filled with bots.
>"duhh that could just be you"
I don't even have zandronum or whatever it's called installed. I know you won't believe me but whatever.
>Do you not see that all the anti-mm posts have the exact same writing style and general message?
writing style - that's in your head unfortunately and I can't change that. I would have thought the different screenshots showing the different (you)'s on different browsers with different colour schemes would prove it to you, but no.
general message - well, yeah. the general message is no, they don't want it added to the image. that isn't suspicious.
>there is no way to prove it
if you think of a way, come back and request it.
how about this hypothetical.
if say, 5-10 people all recorded their voice and said they were one of the anti mm people. you'd hear different accents and voices - would that convince you? again, hypothetically. or would you not believe that either? what would it take exactly?

>Surely the logic follows then - you wouldn't want to ADD a new mod to the image that had no multiplayer life. Isn't that reasonable?
Literal nonsense. The reason TO ADD it to the pic is so that more people know about it and thus there are more players. Literally the entire fucking purpose of the pic is to LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT GAMES THEY MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE. Also, it's not empty, every time I enter there's at least a couple of servers with a bunch of people.
>I would have thought the different screenshots showing the different (you)'s on different browsers with different colour schemes would prove it to you, but no.
Because anybody can do it and what's much more apparent is a person's agenda.

He also shit on it in this article and interview on Making of SIGIL from Shacknews in which he claims he was following its release and reading reviews, meaning he knew the name and snubbed REKKR on the DGC podcast when he struggles to "remember" the name and butchers it:
>“When REKKR came out, I was reading reviews on Doom World, and they were like, ‘Wow, so, here's something new.’ And I was like, ‘Goddammit! I came up with that idea, but they came out with it first!’” he recalled. (An overview of REKKR posted on Doom World in September 2016 indicates the mod’s designers came up with the idea well before the game’s full release in July 2018.)

Funny thing about that is that Memento Mori 2 had separate deathmatch sections in its maps two DECADES before you or Romero thought of doing that yourselves. Its mapmakers also forgot to flag said sections' items as multiplayer only, so 100% items is impossible to get in them.

For me it's the atmosphere and pace. It edges out Quake II for me in the gameplay because power-ups are placed instead of items you can save for later. A level with a Quad ideally has to be designed around the specific use right there. The psychological affect a Q1 Quad has for me is like my mind goes into a blind haze as I'm just instinctively speedrunning and killing as fast as possible. It wears off and I come back to my senses, usually amused by retracing my steps through the corpses.
No other FPS makes me do that.

How much of those quirks and bugs Decino talks about on his channel about the OG Doom engine are still present in modern versions of GZDoom?
Note: Not including things like "infinitely tall actors" which are a dedicated flag you can enable in the settings or other deliberately simulated bugs.

NTA, and I don't care about what your favorite eceleb told you, but what's the difference between "deliberately simulated bug" and whatever NOT-simulated quirks/bugs you have in mind?
You do realize that Doom source code has been thoughtfully picked apart into the smallest possible pieces long before your favorite faggy mcfaggot made a twitch account, and there's basically no such thing as non-deliberately simulated bug in modern source ports? Everyone know about Doom bugs, and everyone deliberately simulate them in their source port because that's the accurate behavior. Even GZDoom.
>>
>>12084889
I think it's a combo of most of the enemies having too much HP and some of the level design + enemy layout forcing you to take things more slowly than you might have in Doom 1 and 2 - like you really have to clear out Ogres in a few maps but then they only give you a shotgun + nailgun at the time unless you find x secret and that just means you are stuck slowly plinking away at them sometimes. Quake 1 I feel has the doorway problem all the time - where in you are just stuck peaking around cover to slowly kill something (usually a well positioned Ogre) till it is safe to move into the room and actually fight. Prob an issue with having two nail guns + the super shottie feeling so weak and maybe they could have given you certain guns like the rocket launcher sooner if the enemies are gonna be so chunky all the time. I think the grenade launcher might be an issue too since it is overlapping with the rocket launcher for does good damage but damages you. Shambler I don't mind but I do think Ogres are used way too much and a bunch of the low tier fodder have way too much health alongside it. I immediately enjoyed Arcane Dimensions expanded roster more but the new enemies were also quicker to kill mostly so the gameplay felt faster and snappier. I'll prob play Alkaline and Mjolnir at the same time so I'm not too spoiled by AD.

And then if you aren't in love with the soundtrack it's basically what if we put EMF from Ashes Afterglow on every map in the game. But I think that has a bit too much going on even to really compare. As far Cthulhu stuff goes - I was more impressed with Strange Aeons than Quake 1 so far. The level design is so much more interesting in that.

Dimension of the Machine is really, really good. I thought Quake 2's Call of the Machine was hit or miss, but at least Machine Games' Quake 1 work is 10/10. You can tell this was inspired by Arcane Dimensions from the appearance of these places, and thankfully it's mostly avoiding the "get locked in room, meet massive waves of enemies" modern maps like to do.

Kinda? I poke around at it sometimes, and the player controller is something I wouldn't mind using in another project (or refining that one). But it would need to be scaled back for a single person to project I think.
I also started a game it game that's a bit more manageable.
And here's a game I did with my kid that sits unfinished (needs saving, music, and some simple story elements, plus a kids mode to make it easier).

I *guess* Eraser could count as a TC, though it's mostly partial sinxe there's plenty of stock textures in places and the monster roster is largely the same. The project I'm working on now is more of a proper TC, just with a short runtime.

>>12085609
That's the idea, it's a nice contrast and makes places stick in the player's memory easier.

>>12085639
Small world is small.
>>
>>12085792
I guess Golden Souls is encompassing enough in its changes and advanced levels that it's like a TC? Not sure though, much of it is still stock Doom, at least the with the first one (still haven't gotten around to the sequels). I'd personally at least call the first Golden Souls more like a Partial Conversion.

>>12085803
Oh yeah, so he did.
>>
>>12085823
I never knew where the cut off was for a total conversion. Back in the day it seemed to be more forgiving. Like if the goal was to change the setting entirely, even if you were using a bunch of stock weapons/textures, it was still a total conversion. It seemed mostly about the enemies/setting/story.
I think the definition got more stringent as time went on.
>>
>>12085831
Today, at least in my mind, total conversion at least entails all new assets.
>>
>>12085823
>I'd personally at least call the first Golden Souls more like a Partial Conversion.
It's vague but most of the guns are different enough, and I think the enemies had extra stuff to them so they weren't just the Doom ones. Even more so with the revamp of it.

The sequels and Simon's Destiny definitely are TCs too.
>>
>>12085831
I guess it's all relative. Back in the day, people called Osiris a TC, even though it's just partially reskinned.

>>12085856
Or maybe changed assets at least? Pirate Doom feels like it could count for a TC because it really goes out of its way to reskin all the base enemies.
>>
>>12085931
Yeah, changed would still cover it I think.

The term "Total Conversion" was coined by Aliens TC right? Which is also of course the first? So that would be one benchmark to judge them by I suppose.
>>
>>12085938
>>12085931
Advancing technology and all that, back in the day there wasn't a lot you could change.

These days comprehensive TCs are dying out in favor of just making games and selling them bundled with GzDoom.

well, he did do a lot of deathmatching with randos. allegedly, if civvie11 is correct (doubtful), he played so much doom that carmack actually locked his computer after x amount of time during the development of doom 2. i have no idea if this is true, but assuming it is, it wouldnt be particularly difficult for a developer to beat the average joe blow whos only ever played solo. i dont imagine too many people were fragging in the doom 1 days. or maybe they were, i dunno, i was a quake 2 brat so i missed out.

This took me like 2 hours. Good comfy exploring to find most of the shards and I loved all the custom content. Missed 2 of the secrets and the game said I was shit at the end for beating that final fight too slowly. It's so big that I doubt I will compare it to everything else in AD or other Quake mods to it similar to how I treat other large complex levels in Doom where in I can only really compare them to each other.

However, Instincts adds new multiplayer modes, weapons, and 'feral abilities', the latter being reflected in the modified storyline.

Nope, I only heard of AD by the time I was halfway done with Eraser and it was taking up *most* of my waking hours so I barely had time to play games. Only reason I brought Maskim Xul up is because both are big, sprawling maps that more or less let you go anywhere you like - either way, I still think Eraser is nowhere near as good or tight like that. I think I even called it a poor man's Library of Nightmares at some point.

This does remind I should go back to AD already, get Bogbottom out of the way *again* so I remember where all the tomes are and get my playthrough of it going after like 8 months. I love AD but the huge maps that take hours to clear sometimes give me an aneurysm.

>>12087060
I thought it might have been the other way around. Maskim Xul I think suffered from changing the weapons up too much once you got to map 3's Archvile library and the final fight right after. Amazing extremely hostile atmosphere tho from beginning to end. Eraser having a more standard loadout but upgraded was far less frustrating to play.

Yeah, you're right. In technical skill shown it may be inferior, but familiarity has its own merits. Obsidian also tends to make dehacked/voodoo sorcery first and maps second so by consequence they feel a bit hollow on occasion.

Something about the idea of a map that is well-designed enough to avoid relying on teleport traps and encourages both players and monsters to move through it is just appealing to me.

Anyway, got started on the dorms. I think I'll deliberately make them a bit less functionality first because I'm kinda tired of making only utilitarian spaces already.

I think my real issue with the weapon roster towards the end of Maskim Xul was that the Grimoire Excidium - didn't just eat your health for ammo. It also ate your armor. If it only ate your health that would be one thing. But the armor limited its usefulness in the final fights and made me wish I had a BFG9000 instead. The jackbombs needed to be able to be cooked, thrown, or possibly just set as a proximity mine - too many times the enemy would just walk past it even on redoing an entire fight. So again I felt it felt like I would have been better off with a plasma gun. And it felt like for all the time spent waiting for it to detonate - the bomb itself didn't do enough damage. Both ideas were neat - I just wish the execution had been better on both.

Rest of the guns I had no issues with but the two plasma alts being worse than the original and the enemies deadlier made map 3 less fun than it would have been.
>>

>>

That is actual music but they also don't use it on every level. You load up the most popular mapsets and you are gonna find custom music on most maps. Not always - but a good chunk of the time. And there is enough variation in Bobby Prince's soundtrack to keep things fresh using just his Doom music in a megawad.

Do people just not play Quake mods? Every other map I am seeing just picked Gloom Keep or Focus. How is this not a bigger complaint? You'd think people would want to copy Tears if it is such a popular map and maybe recognize a different song might draw people over. I feel like I've been posting next to NIN cultists the entire time and I can't trust a thing they have to say anymore since they just want every map to have Gloom Keep in the background.

Maybe better. I wouldn't perhaps mind some basic Halloween map project where people make one map each with a deadline for the 31st or so.
I like Ad Mortem's palette and textures, and I'd like to map with them, it's got that great Halloween mood, but I don't think that's like, available as an untangled and free asset or anything.

Perhaps we could just do a little map project like this using whatever the latest build of Ad Mortem is as a pseudo-iwad? It could be dubbed Sub Mortem or Side Mortem or something, maybe going for a 2048 size just to make sure people don't get too carried away.

Not the most original solution or anything, but it's something straightforward and low-resistance which fits the mood of the season.

I agree with you in principle, but the NIN soundtrack has a great synergy with the quake atmosphere more than a lot of generic ambient music, which I listen to often when working.

I have played a few quake maps that used baroque music to great effect. Two I remember off the top of my head - Handle's sarabande and Vivaldi's winter.

This general has never been consistent with yearly projects, Halloween or otherwise. I'm not sure what you were expecting.

>>12087675
I agree. I assume in the early days of quake modding there was hesitancy to replace music, since suitable CD tracks are rarer, bigger filessize, and more likely to attract copyright concern compared to midi, but by now custom music should be the default.

>>12087716
Most modern quake maps make little pretense of maintaining the same atmosphere as the original levels, and I think that's ultimately beneficial to avoid monotony. The same should apply to the music.
