>In the wake of the September 11 attacks, in the PS2 version of "Panic!", the effect of monuments around the world being "destroyed" by pressing the wrong switch was changed to "covered in feces." As a result, the release date, originally scheduled for spring 2002, was postponed to summer.

The German version of Half-Life replacing the human enemies with robots is something everyone probably already knows, but what's even funnier is what happens if you kill a scientist or security guard.

Every corpse and gib in the German version of SiN was replaced with boxes with "CENSORED" written on them.
It gets absolutely ridiculous when you have to pick up an UNCENSORED severed hand next to a pile of red boxes in the shape of a human in one mission.

Pretty much every single non-bing bing wahoo game that came out prior to the late 2010s was censored to oblivion in Germany.
>>
Non-censorship change: the Ratchet and Clank games aren't changed that much for Japan, but for some reason they decided Ratchet needed bigger eyebrows to appeal to Japanese audiences (and it worked I guess)

He's like this in every game but it looks the most ridiculous in the PS3 games where it's like they stapled caterpillars to his head.
>>
>>12084337
Not retro but Bulletstorm was one of the most insane cases.
The over the top violence was pretty much the selling point of that game and they censored it to such a degree that even fucking skulls on poles were removed.

as an american't, i think Probotector is an improvement over Contra. These are so cute! :3

Which kind of defeats the purpose of the game. It's biggest selling point was the dismemberment tech.

NA and EU versions of BioMetal have music by 2 Unlimited.

Imagine coming home from your roller rink + laser tag birthday party, putting in the new SNES game you were gifted, and hearing the most memorable roller rink jock jam

Probotector is probably the only time censorship actually made something cooler.

Reminds me of that video where someone in an audience was waving a german flag and Merkel walked up and confiscated it, telling him no. Just wtf, not even allowed to show love for your own country over there?
>>
>>12083773
The PS2 version only came out in Japan, I doubt 9/11 attacks were the reason. They likely felt it was more in-character with the game.

The SegaCD version, which was released in both Japan and the US however did have two levels removed, one which involves a Japanese typewriter (and had some violent scenes) and one that had a cigarette vending machine.

Replacing human or human-like characters, especially if they can die, with robots was very common in European countries back then.

Probably one of the most ridiculous was Contra Hard Corps, which had you play as either a man, a woman, a cyborg werewolf, or a robot, which resulted in them being changed into a robot, a robot, a wolf-robot, and... a robot. Even more ridiculous is that in the character select screen their heads would morph into the other character as you changed your selection, but since the man and woman were changed into identical robots you see them morph for a second into a human-like face before morphing back into the exact same robot with just a slightly different color pallet.

Oh, and the US version also did not go unscathed, since the game was designed with a lifebar in mind but this was removed in the US and UK versions, turning it into one-hit deaths in a game not intended for you to die in one hit, making the non-Japanese versions brutally difficult.

Hegel's "WE WUZ THESUSING AND ANTI-THESUSING AND SYNTHISIN AND SHIEET" buck-broke Germany and Germans along with the world through them on a metaphysical level.

Add to that highly repressive Protestant mores and you have this shit.

Based spiteful devs. The Duke Nukem devs did something similar when porting to the N64. Nintendo wanted them to tone down the sexual themes so they did and made it somewhat more violent out of protest.

Darkel wasn't removed because of 9/11, it was because he just overlapped with rampages and didn't add anything to the game. Shit gets removed in-dev all the time, sometimes small NPCs, sometimes entire areas and modes and game mechanics.
>>
>>12086382
>>12086504
There's so much bullshit about what was allegedly removed floating around. Hell, the fucking GTA wiki claims entire buildings were removed last time I checked. If it was anything more than a handful of dialogue and radio commercials, there's no way leftovers wouldn't have been found in the code by now.

What the fuck were these devs smoking? Is there some plot in the manual about how you're some Boston Dynamics robot golfer being tested against humans, or is this just one of those '90s things where they made it KEWL and XTREME for no reason?
>>
>>12086581

Wait there is only ONE robot?
With a name like that I'd expect a bunch of robots golf it out, which would be kinda cool.
You could have different kinds, maybe a barrel on wheels with a swinging arm and other cool shit.

That ain't censorship, that's just trying to appeal to a foreign domestic market.

Golf Ou was a GBC game that was Japan exclusive, but unreleased EU and US market localisations were produced and were discovered in the 2020 gigaleak.
The EU localisation featured the same kindly old man giving you golfing tips, whilst the US localisation had a hostile robot threatening you.

https://tcrf.net/Proto:Golf_Ou:_The_King_of_Golf

Golf King:
>Hit the ball on its right side for a hook.
>Try it!
>Hit the ball on its left side for a slice.
>Try it!

Golf Robot:
>Hit the ball on its right side for a hook, human.
>Try it, OR FACE PUNISHMENT AT THE HANDS OF YOUR ROBOTIC MASTER!
>Hit the ball on its left side for a slice, human.
>Try it, OR BE BANISHED FROM THIS GOLFING UTOPIA.

IIRC every Japanese character you typed on the typewriter had it's own animation, and I think one of them got beheaded and another committed seppuku, both had blood too if I recall.

Found videos of the two removed scenes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR4eURRMuuc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z09ocQK7UDw

Sucks that these were removed since the first one is a shitload of content to have cut out. The the beheading I mentioned is in the first one at 5:17, I guess I mis-remembered the seppuku one since I didn't see it.
>>
>>12084893
>>12088347
I also just realized I forgot to clarify, the scenes were only removed in the US version, not cut from every version, they are there in both the Japanese SegaCD and PS2 versions.
>>
>>12086517
Well if it isn't there, that doesn't mean it wasn't planned...
