Should I get an OEM drop-in replacement N64 stick or a full replacement unit? I find the standard stick a little uncomfortable and I can get one of those 8bitdo units for about 10 dollars more, though I'm reading a lot of conflicting reports on how they perform
from my research, all the 3rd party replacements have various compromises and oversights compared to OEM. Obviously OEM has a durability issue if it wasn't opened up and lubed early on.I've personally settled on using a gamecube controller adapter for n64
The 8bitdo sticks recalibrate when you hit diagonals. That being said normies don't seem notice so depending on how autistic you want to get with it, you might just fuck it and get one
>>12085124depends on what you are gonna play.goldeneye, banjo tooie, jet force gemini and other games where aiming is important? OEM is better.for everything else a gamecube-style stick will do.this is because n64 sticks use a different response curve, they are more sensitive at the beginning of the travel.regular sticks use a linear response curve, so the sensitivity is the same from the beginning of the stick travel to the end.pic partially related.
>>12085194>they are more sensitive at the beginning of the travelConsidering they are entirely digital and have a humongous deadzone at the end, does that actually matter? The amount of actual stick positions in the actual movement range is tiny, I have a hard time believing that any minor differences in the response curve are actually noticeable in games.
>>12085205it does matter.the n64 stick has no deadzone. yes, a loose stick has a big physical deadzone. but the electronics don't. that is why a new stick feels so responsive.play a game like turok, you'll notice that aiming slows down as you approach the end of the stick. this happens no matter how tight the stick is.if you do the same with a gc-style stick replacement, the aiming moves at the same speed and doesn't slow down as harshly.in games with aiming reticle like goldeneye or banjo tooie, if you move the reticle to the edge the camera starts to move roughly when the stick starts to slowdown. but that doesn't happen on gc-style sticks, so aiming is harder.this may have been intentional to compensate for stick wear.afaik, 8bitdo hall stick also has the same issue.
