Would Gamecube have been a good console if they had launched with a Super Mario collectathon instead of this kiddie Resident Evil ripoff?
>>

it didn't work last time, idk why you think it'll work this time. having autistic hatred for luigi's mansion of all games is your and your problem alone.

gamecube vad.
kiddei.

It was everyone's problem that generation, all the heavy hitters were delayed and rushed

Luigi’s Mansion is like if Peter Jackson had made an animated version of The Silmarillion after The Fellowship of the Ring instead of The Two Towers.

Luigi's Shitty Ass Mansion ruined the perception of the Gamecube and killed the console.

N64 had a revolutionary Mario game at launch and it did nothing for its sales and perception. They would have needed a really good multiplayer game with the similar appeal to Goldeneye 64 or Halo. Maybe Smash Melee at launch would have worked too.

>gamecube seethe thread #3247
why are snoys so insecure?
>>
>>12088675
In what way is it a resi ripoff?
>>
>>12089620
In no way. They are completely different in setting and gameplay.

>NES
Launches (for the most part) with revolutionary 2D Mario platformer that sets the standard for the genre
>SNES
Launches with an iterative but none the less terrific 2D platformer that shows off the hardware extremely well.
>N64
Launches with revolutionary 3D Mario title that sets the standard for the genre
>Gamecube
Launches with a fucking...Luigi spinoff that has maybe 8 bucks of gameplay and some lighting effects

Yeah Nintendo wasn't fooling anyone with this shit. They were lucky Melee was such a big hit.

Super Monkey Ball was the best GameCube launch title. It's a great game but yeah it doesn't do the flagship job the way those older Mario games could. The Star Wars/Luigi combo was solid but it's a shame they didn't have a Sunshine to show off at that time. Or, yeah, Smash Bros. Wow that would have been something. Or Double Dash, even that would have been a better flagship title than poor Luigi's Mansion (even though I do like that game).
>>
>>12088675
They knew how crappy Mario Sunshine was going to be so they went with this instead.

Melee was pretty damn close to the launch though.

Luigi's Mansion is a Horror Action Fishing game. It has nothing to do with Survival Horror.
I don't understand this narrative that it's some Resident Evil shit.
It doesn't even structure itself like classic Resident Evil.

LM's biggest flaw is that it has vignettes of arcade design that it doesn't commit to.
It desperately begs you to replay it like there's some transformative experience as you get better at it,
but it has some things lacking. None of the sequels build on that premise, at all.

One of the most amazing things about Luigi's Mansion's combat is in the tutorial,
allowing you to do arcade Beat Em Up style "Group and Crush" crowd control,
to the point of sucking up 8 ghosts at once.

Not only does this barely come up in the main game, there's little to show for it when you pull it off.
There's neither a survival, nor a scoring benefit to overachieving in active combat scenarios.
I also think it suffers from that 2000's "I'm a console game inspired by arcades but also a console game!!"
awkward middleground where console players will find it too short, and arcade players notice the awkward pacing on repeat playthroughs.

There's no true sequel to Luigi's Mansion.

Luigi's Mansion was like top 10 GC games, easy. I even replayed it a few times as a kid, and I almost never did that.

It literally doesn't. It's more Zelda with its shallow lock & key structure, even telling you where to put them.
There's no mental conceptualization of the space you have to navigate, no puzzle/riddle solving,
no resource management, no resource funneling, not even an ounce of non-linearity.

It's a linear stretch zigzagging through until all the numbers go up.

None of this resembles RE1, 2 or 3. You saw a mansion, locked doors and a door transition and it gave you Boss Baby vibes.
Silent Hill literally resembles that shit more and any Silent Hill fan will give you a wedgie for calling it "A Resident Evil Clone".
