Mjolnir's version of Heretic is somehow the most fun I have ever had playing Heretic. The powerup changes are just nice and drastically reduced enemy count makes it no longer an absolute slog. And it's just casually hidden in a secret. Impressive mod and a shame Mjolnir will never be finished.

It wasn't long ago that jokes about Nightdive remastering their remasters were funny
>>12089592>>source code has been supposedly "lost" for over 20 yearsThe source code of Blood was never lost. People just couldn't get Monolith/Warner to release it. A couple of veteran Monolith developers even stated to have had it, but couldn't release the source for legal reasons.https://blood-wiki.org/index.php?title=Blood_Source_Campaign
>>12089592Wasn't Blood's source code actually leaked a little while back? Like not the old alpha leak from the 90s, but the finished retail version. As said, it was never lost, it was just locked up somewhere. Compare to the source code for Strife, that actually IS lost.
>>12089656>Wasn't Blood's source code actually leaked a little while back? Like not the old alpha leak from the 90s, but the finished retail version. If you talk about the version that was leaked by "definitely not nu-Apogee people", then it was still an Alpha version.

He still got early version of PowerslaveEX and extremely early probably unusable version of TurokEX open sourced on his Github, alongside StrifeVE (if only because it was based on Chocolate Doom). If he didn't work at Nightdive at the time, he'd probably open source BloodEX too.I just don't think that there is any interest in that code.>>12089617Now I remember shit like Jace Hall wanting to re-release Blood for its multiplayer after seeing ZDaemon and getting nostalgic for Bloodbath or hyper3DGE developer adding copious amounts of Quake source code in his port to make use of permission Monolith gave to Transfusion team to use Blood assets to make his commerical game that got shut down by WB and never materialized. There was a lot of funny shit like this happening before BloodGDX and NBlood suddenly materialized one after another and both before FS.
>>12089582Usually takes like 3 days
Posting this one more time because of the fuckhead who wiped his ass on the catalogue.Since some people complained about a lack of variety in music for playing Arcane Dimensions, I quickly grabbed and compiled these. They're just music tracks in .ogg format, but you could put them into the game folders and then also change music tracks with the console.None of them loop seamlessly because Quake's soundtrack doesn't do that either and I couldn't be fucked even if it did. I generally went for slow and medium tracks with some atmosphere to them, how well they actually fit is probably very subjective.A bunch of tracks from Trent Reznor's public domain Ghosts albums:https://files.catbox.moe/62ea9t.zipThis one isn't actually assembled by me, someone else on /vr/ compiled it years ago and I just use it sometimes.A bunch of tracks from the old Gremlin Interactive games Loaded and Re:Loaded:https://files.catbox.moe/dfxbz0.zipThese probably fit better in the more techbase kind of levels.Tracks from various versions of the Diablo mod The Hell:https://files.catbox.moe/hsxk0h.zipThese are actually moody and spooky as fuck, I think these would fit pretty well as substitutes for the original Trent Reznor soundtrack in overall feel.
>>12089962>Is he?His attitude towards BloodCM come off as very insecure. That's what I'm judging it off.https://x.com/SVKaiser/status/1126922637475766272>He still got early version of PowerslaveEX and extremely early probably unusable version of TurokEX open sourced on his GithubWould've been good to see those updated, but that won't be in Nightdive's style.>I just don't think that there is any interest in that code.I think there would've been. That would've allowed people to have a deeper look at where things went exactly wrong with Fresh Supply and fix it themselves. There's clearly no interest in that, I'll agree with you.>There was a lot of funny shit like this happeningIt does sound fun.
>>12090029I mean, a comparison to BloodCM is only barely above a comparison to ZBlood. I'd say it's a reasonable-ish thing to be pissed off about. I can see the argument how it actually uses Build at core, but it is a gross oversimplification of how things internally work. That said, it might've sounded to him like a personal attack on his own road as a developer too, considering that he gone from making Doom 64 Absolution TC for Doomsday to making Doom64EX, from which point it might've been insecure, but I feel like that is reaching.
The older i get the less and less i care about perfect twitch aiming and i just want to play with a controllerdoom on woof plays really well with a controller
Giving it another whirl for the love of the level. Beginning of this run made me laugh out fucking loud.>>12090103Doom as a game is fairly accommodating to gamepads, you can have half decent controls without analog sticks, and genuinely decent with two analog sticks.Woof and Nugget (and GzDoom) have good gamepad support also, and also they allow you to use a mouse at the same time as a gamepad, in case that's something you want to try.I came to prefer analog stick to WASD as I got older (more comfortable on my fingers and wrist), but I wanted to keep using mouse, so I was glad to discover that this actually works pretty well.I also see some people say they get a good substitute for mouseaim with gyro input, but I don't know if Woof and Nugget actually support that.
>>12090121I still prefer a keyboard, but Doom's lack of vertical camera control lends itself well to analog stick usage. You can roll the stick around instead of simply nudging a camera like you would in other games.

>>12090149I skimmed some of those posts, and also threw it in as just an additional alternative. The other two are different anyway.I'm not strongly married to it, I love the soundtracks to the expansions too, and those sound nothing at all like the base game's soundtrack.

>>12090364>I have no interest playing things like Hideous Destructor, Deathstrider, or Project Gryphon with a controller but I’d still like to see it.I bought a controller specifically to test gameplay in DS and concluded that it's impossible to support it. For one, InputProcess doesn't even have proper controller support so a majority of the menu won't work correctly. The relevant feature suggestion that was opened about three months ago has gone stale. Then there's the problem of having too many buttons. Euro Truck Simulator 2 cleverly solved that issue by having customizable modifier keys, but that doesn't work here because GZDoom's bindings are far too simple. Delta Touch seems marginally more playable than a controller. I know, I don't like that fact either.
>>12090446I wonder if some variant of a weapon wheel could be used for various commands, or if that would get too cumbersome for HD and DS anyway?

>>12090476Join us!Join us!PLEURGH! PLEURGH!Join us!
>>12090456For HD it might be a lot easier to do. There are fewer things to support and the majority of commands are simple key combinations. Easy to say in theory, though. For me personally it'd be a waste of time for the amount of effort required to attempt to support that kind of thing for DS, both to create and later maintain it, assuming it's even possible to begin with. There isn't a large enough playerbase to test, develop for, or even justify the feature to begin with, and within that already small group only a fraction of a fraction would actually use a controller to play this kind of mod. Making sure both types of input are supported without dumbing things down just isn't worth it. Games geared toward controllers/consoles tend to have the UI and gameplay designed around that fact, and because those are more limited by design it's inevitable to "streamline" certain concepts. I'm not willing to sacrifice any of the current gameplay/QoL to accommodate consolefags, as much as I'd like to see the mod become more accessible on principle.
I'm liking Alkaline as well.

I saw some youtube video where someone claimed the G-Man was just some employee of the US government in the original Half-Life and not some strange entity beyond comprehension... I have to ask, does anyone really think that and how did they come to that conclusion? I mean really, even if we ignore everything aside from the original game even disregarding the expansions of the original game, we're still talking about a character who can seemingly teleport at will, speaks in a bizarrely stunted manner about mysterious employers and his way of "hiring" Gordon involves a series of confusing actions. Ok, question for the anti-save state crowd out there, specifically in relation to Doom. Let's say there is a map with a clear "death zone," that is, an area where the odds of you surviving on the first try are almost zero. You need multiple play-throughs to figure out the routing and flow. But, let's say you can get to that point easily, trivially, 9 times out of 10.Do you still feel that saving before the death zone is cheating, cheap, lame, etc., or is it just a sensible use of time? These days I mostly play for fun and don't concern myself too much with 100% perfect play-throughs, but I still try to reduce unnecessary saves / save-states to the bare minimum.I'm pistol starting a bunch of .wads and have found this coming up repeatedly. (I would still need to replay the death zones even without pistol start.) It feels bad to save during an otherwise hardcore run, but replaying the same parts over and over utterly kills my desire to even get to the hard part again. What are your thoughts?

Okay, I completed Dimension of the Machine and enjoyed it.>Realm of the MachinistsNice start to the episode, I don't see how it's themed unless the Machinists were sewer workers.>Realm of the BlacksmithsThe best realm. It feels like you're fighting your way into and through a massive forge, I really liked this, great looking maps and fun fights. You really had to fight for the Rune and unplugging it from the device caused all hell to break loose. I wish the other realms did this sort of thing with their Runes.>Realm of the StonemasonsMore like realm of the FUCKING VORES. I expected a big stone castle or something but it's just lava. It's okay, but fuck the obsession with platforming and why do you need this many vores? No illuminati anywhere, 0/10.>Realm of the CultistsHey, I get Ranger is pushing your shit in but you really don't need to give up this hard. The smallest and easiest realm, I loved the visual of the giant evil cathedral at the start and what I thought was lava at the end turning out to be a weird underground sunset. Odd that the first level gives you the SSG last, even after the secret thunderbolt. I'm assuming it's trying to do some storytelling with the Enforcers shooting at the monsters near the end but it also could have been an AI fuckup trying to kill me and setting off an infight war.>Realm of the AstrologersThe start was a bit shit thanks to the jumping part, but getting teleported into that research base was a neat twist, as was overriding security and causing a big war. The second map was cool, with the Grunts and Enforcers trying to explore an ancient temple and all the scripted infighting>Final MapOH BOY, IT'S CHTHON! AGAIN! You had expansion bosses to choose from and you did this. A better boss fight that his original appearance I guess...Pretty good all the same, I liked this more than the new Quake 2 episode, but I'm a little confused why they didn't add expansion content into all this.
>>12092607>but I'm a little confused why they didn't add expansion content into all thisMore like why they didn't add any new content to this new expansion at all and it's just a vanilla map pack, when even the tiny studios with infinitely worse modding tools managed to do that two decades ago.

>>12089221>>12089223SUB MORTEM : A Dead Simple Halloween ProjectJust for the mood of the season, a simple and straightforward mapping project. I wanted to play around with these textures and props more, and so did some others.>Assets: Ad Mortem, no additional assets or custom textures (there's already LOTS).https://files.catbox.moe/tsacv4.zip>iWAD: Doom 2>Map Format: MBF21>Constraint: Playable area MUST fit 2048x2048 box.>Deadline: Your level should be fully completed by October 31st.The idea here is that I provide the latest published build of Ad Mortem with the levels stripped out, and that's used as the temporary asset pack which we make maps with. When Sub Mortem is finished and completed, it'd work as its own 'expansion pack' to Ad Mortem, a .wad containing only the levels, music tracks, and a UMAPINFO lump, which you load on top of Ad Mortem so it adds itself as a selectable second episode. (We'd probably arrange Sub's levels starting at MAP40 or so, just to be safe). If Ad Mortem itself ever has that vaunted final version made, it would be trivial to tweak Sub Mortem in case any of its map slots would need to be shifted or anything.I would really not want to add any custom content onto this like new textures, DeHacked, etc, because this should slot effortlessly and seamlessly onto Ad Mortem, which already has LOT of good stuff to work with anyway. Only levels and their music tracks. You have a little over 2 weeks to put the map together, and since it's constrained to 2048, you can't get carried away into some sort of magnum opus which won't be finished in time. I basically just expect a turnout of 4 or 5 maps or so, but that's still good enough.

Batman Doom is still lauded as one of the big landmarks for how creative and comprehensive it was with its DeHacked usage, and that one is fucking 26 years old now. One of its authors did level design for Bioshock, by the way, and later remade one of his levels from there as a Doom 2 level, just for the fun of it.A more recent one was like a Vanilla limits demake of Ghoul's Forest 3, which honestly looks better than the original Ghoul's Forest 3, and is just one little quirk/limit away from being perfect. There was also Knee-Deep In Knee-Deep In ZDoom, which was Knee-Deep In ZDoom demade in a similar manner, and that one's also very fucking impressive.

Has anyone actually played Alien Trilogy on PC? It seems almost everyone played the PS1 version and to lesser extent Saturn. Are there any decent source ports for the game?I just beat the game on Playstation yesterday and the third chapter was way harder than the first 2, there were also a few instances where you could get soft locked, once you know what to do it's not that hard but for the first time the levels can be quite confusing. Also some aliens take way too much ammo to kill and the flamethrower runs out of ammo really fast.I'm not sure if I wanna try resurrection because everyone says that game is unfairly hard even on easy difficulty.
>>12094907>I used to like him until I found his twitterI don't use social media, so the idea of suddenly hating a content creator for their behavior on such sites is alien and weird to me.

>>12094964Serious Sam has been getting a lot of disrespect lately by people who parrot others opinions and say the game is just S+M1
>>12094964I tried to get into this, but it's just wave based arena fights with lots of kiting.Funnily enough, I played Dwell for Quake recently and they used Serious Sam enemies, and they also managed to make the mod mostly wave based arena fights, so it's like these things have a curse they carry with them.
>>12094964I like Serious Sam, but I can't play SS2 because it always gives me a headache whenever I try.
>>12094974>That picKek, I get the reference. You could do it with a revenant too, come to think of it.

>>12094191Personally I just made it as powerup for one character akin to TF2 Spy's cloak and replaced the sphere itself with something more useful.
>>12094964>is serious sam even posted here? There used to be some weekly coop events. I don’t think any wad or mod I’ve played has had more fun “huge enemy count” arena fights than the Sam games.SS2 was the first one I got into, ironically, and it was through Gametap.>>12094969That can be a big part of it, but not as important as properly dispatching them. Nearly any enemy that can run after you also outruns you, very unlike Doom, Quake, and the Build games.
>>12094124You can set the controls to a moore modern style in the settings so the game still plays fairly well unlike most other PS1 FPS games, I think it's 3rd or 4th optionIt actually had modern style controls before Alien Resurrection
>>12094772Treasure Tech Land, coming Soon™
>>12094772That one where I fucked your mom.
>>12095005>Nearly any enemy that can run after you also outruns you, very unlike Doom, Quake, and the Build games. This is why I enjoy Serious Sam. You have to engage every enemy at some point. It's a big balancing act that really makes you feel like a one man army in the end. There's a constant push and pull to fights where you gain ground causing enemies to spawn before you fall back so you can dispatch the horde. It sounds like it would get boring constantly repeating that but the game spices things up by throwing high value targets in the mix, forcing you to change your tactics on the fly and adapt.
>>12094964>Enemy health multiplier on Serious difficulty changed from 1.25 1.0.This changelog note sealed the deal for me. Finally I'm gonna finish SS2 on Serious, barely touched the difficulty before because of that dumb HP multiplier. What do you think about dual weapon and sprint gameplay modifiers?IMO sprint is good the way it's handled here, that is you can only speed up forward running. I mean it's not omni-directional unlike say Doom, which would be bad because several things in Sam depend on player being slow. There is sprint in SS3 & SS4, but it took away your ability to fire weapons which sucks. For whatever reason they ditched that in 2, it was the right thing to do. This encourages more aggressive playstyle.Dual weapons is straight up OP though. Also it's a little finicky with Uzis and Revolvers. I'm thinking of switching these off, thankfully game allows to do so mid-game.
How does Painkiller differ in gameplay from Serious Sam besides the cards?
>>12095051Weapons are neat if a bit showy, general gameplay is more monotonous.
>>12095051painkiller is more braindead and more serious (heh), i say that as someone that likes painkiller
>>12092867keep working on that map dude
>>12095101Interesting texture usage there.
>>12095029The sheer enemy count AND enemy variety can be a complete joy. A lot of the boss fights are simple good fun, too.>>12095035I think "shoot and sprint" is an upgrade you can grab in 4. I should replay it and its expansion sometime, but it's looking like I'm going to go back to SS2 sometime soon here.>>12095051In gameplay it differs based on what was talked above about the movement. There's a fun bunnyhop that lets you cruise around fights but the bad guys can't keep up with you. The weapon combinations are fun if seemingly arbitrary at times, and there's a good Painkiller GZDoom mod that's worth trying out.A bigger difference regarding Painkiller and Sam are the level and enemy themes.
Blood is fucking amazing. Just beat E2M3 and holy shit what a masterpiece. Actually jumped from that ghost in the secret pathway.btw what do tomes do? open the secret mission exit when you collect all of them?
>>12095109>and there's a good Painkiller GZDoom mod that's worth trying out.Painslayer's one of the better ways to get a Painkiller experience, even if the cards are pretty busted since you can just focus hard on getting the 666 ammo one.
>>12095105Thanks. Sadly Ad Mortem assets are poorly organised. I have no idea how to find something I need. 2.5k textures, take a guess what is what.
>>12095101Looks D64esque, I like it.>>12095116The tomes would open up a secret exit in the level you find them, yes. I don't think they're used anywhere else in the game, at least not anywhere else in the base game (haven't played the expansions).
>>12095128I know, that's part of why I didn't want to try to add anything extra to it, because I have no idea what else Vaeros might add onto it for whatever final build is intended.

>>12094605>evasive responsesThey are deliberately avoiding describing their dev strategy and attempting to obfuscate it by making it sound more nuanced than need be.Based on those logs, they are just cherry-picking fragments of code from the original game into fresh supply, and probably doing minimal manual testing to check there is nothing obviously broken. It would be preferable for them to write a proper test suite on the game state, based on expected values dumped from the original game, and write whatever shitty new code they want to pass that.Who is this Bundle85 faggot?>It seems to be a semantic difference by what Kaiser meant by "from scratch"versus what "from scratch" actually means

>>12095128The flowy liquid sky used to show the reflection of flowing water from below is kinda clever actually. What if you put a brick texture there, and then layered the animated texture over (1 map unit in front of it), and used translucency on that?

>>12095160>They are deliberately avoiding describing their dev strategy and attempting to obfuscate it by making it sound more nuanced than need be.I won't say so. For once, Edward gave a good answer that does line up with Hendricks observations he described on Doomworld.>they are just cherry-picking fragments of code from the original game into fresh supplyIn other words, it literally is just an overhaul of Fresh Supply. People that are okay with Refreshed Supply (from what I understand) are this way because they think it's fully new port of the game done from ground up with source code as its foundation. That's impression you get from explanations and remarks from Kaiser and other Nightdive developers. This slip up by Edward and Hendricks expert opinion instead reveal the truth that it's actually Fresh Supply 2.0. A patch people hoped that "nu-Atari didn't allow them to make".>Who is this Bundle85 faggot?"Software & Netcode Engineer at Nightdive Studios". With a reputation for being obnoxiously tense and straight-up antagonist towards people. Also, it's embarrassing how Kaiser immediately went into "I'm getting bullied in middle school" mode to a point where a fucking Discord moderator speaks for him like overprotective mother for his child.

>>12095167>>12095221I tried to another way and make brick texture transclucent, but:1. Brick texture is too hard, you can barely see reflections behind.2. Both Woof! and UDB start spazing out and give me rendering glitches. Not fun.
>>12094969it is though
>>12095320I meant like overlaying the animated texture as an animated one, not making the bricks translucent, but the top of the animated texture is that tortured soul sky, which you can't exactly cut off. That kind of thing would be a real rough visual hack though. The best way to make that kind of visual would be to plain make custom versions of the brick textures with water shimmer on them, which would require a fair bit of small fine tuning due to palette limitations.

>>12095252Sometimes, I find it's best to limit the number of levels you play a day to avoid burnout.

btw there's STILL ammo scarcity in E2 of blood despite what I'd been told. You lied to me
>>12095337There are several on steam outside of Rekkr - like Hedon mentioned above. I didn't list most of Scumhead's other titles since I thought their map design needed some serious work. I heard Scythe 2 was much improved in comparison to the rest. Action Doom 2 was another total conversion meant to be more like a brawler. And Venturous which is basically an Indiana Jones Total Conversion. Hellshots Golf too was a thing.I don't know how the hell I forgot Selaco exists till now - but yeah that's GZDoom and it's frankly the best of the GZDoom releases on steam gameplay wise and one of the absolute best GZ Doom TCs period alongside Ashes. It's kind of better gameplay wise than Ashes but I do much prefer the worldbuilding/lore of Ashes and Hedon more than Selaco.
>>12095252I only ever check monster counts if I'm doing a run for a thread challenge. But also, 70 monsters for one level isn't that much, I'm pretty sure that KDITD has levels with that many (and more) monsters.I suppose it depends on how it's used though, 70 Barons in one level would be basically misery without the BFG9000.
>>12095364The opinion of that gets varied based on difficulty (more enemies, higher health), secrets found, and random weapon drop chance. I feel kinda dumb but when is it useful to use the single barrel fire of the shotgun in blood? I always just spam both barrels at the same time.
>>12095494Yeah that map is a pain to navigate if you want to find everything. Maybe you could add a basic compass to Quake as a simple solution so I could at least know which way I am going.
>>12095498Shooting two separate enemies in rapid succession I guess.
>>12095498When you know that double shot would be excessive. On some edge cases double single shot also can put cultists in their hurt state (they don't shoot after being injured for a while)
>>12095494I love Fogbottom but also slightly hate it. It's gorgeous as fuck and with great gameplay, but it's a daunting fucking task to take it on, you need to make plans for the evening for this kind of level because of how big and sprawling it is.
