It's a ripoff with this game. It doesn't have much old school obtuseness to it, feels very modern in quest design. It basically influenced Baldur's Gate.
The biggest trap to the game is that normal D&D players will want a cleric, but in Dark Sun clerics suck because the gods are dead or absent, so you want a druid instead.

are psionic powers good?
are thri-kreens good?
>>
>>12090087
Kreen get tons of extra attacks, but you should have at least one half-giant. They get a monumental +4 to strength, +2 to constitution, and tons of extra HP. And unlike the tabletop game, no one needs food or water.

Magic and psionic buffs and AOE attacks are nice, but half-giants absolutely shit-stomp this game.
>>
>>12090087
>are psionic powers good?
Yes, but I'd suggest making every single character multi-class and add psionicist to it, don't use them single-class since there isn't an XP cap but rather a level cap. Gladiators aren't very good for this reason, since you'll max them too easily, fighter/psionicist half-giant is better.
>are thri-kreens good?
Thri-kreen are great in the early game and make good Druid/Psioncists, they get multiple unarmed attacks and you can buff both their them with psionics and divine magic to offset some of their squishiness.

Oh that's so sick. I think I have this game downloaded somewhere, but if not I really need to get it. Watched someone play it and it looks great. Killer music too.
>>
>>12090053
Somebody mentioned in an older thread that clerics in game suck because they haven't implemented the full set of tabletop mechanics, so they're gimped.
>>
>>12090205
>Killer music
Yeah, you definitely don't want to use Soundblaster with it, the soundtrack was made with a Roland in mind.

i always love imagining how muscle bound characters like this got in this kind of shape. is this motherfucker lifting weights and gorging himself on protein?
>>
>>12090209
At high levels in tabletop your cleric can transform into an elemental, since clerics in Dark Sun worship the elements. But since it's a low level campaign...
However, clerics are just straight gimped in Dark Sun, it's part of the system, they don't get access to any spells beyond 3rd level of the Cosmos sphere, where a lot of the standard spells that people think of as "clerical" reside, like Raise Dead.

In the Dark Sun setting the landscape is hellish, so every single person is the product of natural selection. There are basically no fatties in the world and everyone has elevated stats compared to normal D&D. That particular specimen is a Mul, a sterile half-dwarf used as slaves, particularly gladiators. So, it's kinda like the Wheel of Pain scenario for Conan, grunt work and constant training.

i think i had these setup:
>races
1 half giant, 1 thri-keen, i forgot the other 2 characters.
>classes
not sure but i think i had everyone multiclass (triple). if i'm not wrong, druids are the one with elemental summons.
1 fighter/psionic/druid (fire)
1 fighter/psionic/druid (water)
1 fighter/psionic/druid (air)
1 fighter/preserver/druid (earth)
the 3 psionic focus on different type (i think there are 3 types of psionic powers), then preserver acted as the sole mage.
i had trouble in the last battle. i skipped the first round by wishing to the genie in the bottle. the second round was easy, but the third round was hell. i also killed the unique half scorpion man (i think the one with the half scorpion man statue quest) before the last battle, but he was replaced by a generic half scorpion man.

ow shit, it seems i was wrong. it was not druids, but clerics who has elemental according to this post >>12090224

Half-Giants can't triple class, so it would've been Fi/Psi. Decent party otherwise. Trick to the final battle is Wall of Fog, you want to break line of sight.
>>12090368
Druids also pick an element.

there was a Dark Sun game that was sort of an early MMO but I don't remember what it's called but I think it was a sequel to this
>>
>>12091717
Crimson Sands, made using the assets of these games, but Wake of the Ravager, not nearly as good as Shattered Lands, is the actual sequel. It was one of the first MMOs, to the point where it was advertised as a "graphical MUD" instead. Unfortunately it was made by devs who didn't really know what they were doing with online games and it easy as hell to hack your toon :) since character files were stored locally, so you'd just get destroyed by cheaters everywhere you go.

um, no sir, i'm fine but thanks for the offer. whomever you do find that's interested in being with you, just remember to wear protection and establish a safe word. kthxbye.

It was on the TEN gaming service in 1996/1997 and every game they had was packed with cheaters. Duke nukem was their flagship game but they also histed panzer general and ither SSI games. A lot of fun but janky.

I have always had the impression that this game does not implement dual wielding penalties, due to not noticing any difference. But I've never been seen accurate documentation. It wouldn't surprise me because the game also makes other mistakes such as multiclassing being level capped, not xp capped. Bunch of weird mistakes from a publisher that had already made a dozen D&D games that are quite accurate.
Inexplicably, the game does hide a lot of stats in a way that's unusual. Where's the to hit?

>In the Dark Sun setting the landscape is hellish, so every single person is the product of natural selection.
Occasionally, there's some interdimensional weirdness going on, and random people get transported to other planes. The inhabitants of those planes are almost invariably horrified by how hardcore Athasians tend to be.

>>12089357
Uh, does the PC version have sound effects that are played over the soundcard and not the dreaded internal speaker? On DOSBOX it's tricky to match the exact clock speed so the internal speaker won't go supersonic farts
>>
>>12092882
With the high attributes, normal dual wield penalties really wouldn't show themselves very well. The level cap is just a stylistic choice, XP works exactly the way it does in tabletop. You're 100% right that not showing THAC0 is baffling, probably just an attempt to keep out the "scary math" stat from RPGlets, since a large part of the game design seems focused on a very "light" experience and not much challenge.
>>
>>12093193
Yes, it also has a Roland compatible soundtrack, so I suggest you use a DOSBox fork that allows you to emulate that. Though, I heard eXoDOS is already setup for that kind of thing or something, haven't used it myself.
>>
>>12090197
>Gladiators aren't very good for this reason, since you'll max them too easily
You could make a human gladiator and dual-class to something else at level 8.
