thinking of picking up one or the other. ignoring backwards compatibility, which has a better library, and what do you prefer/recommend?

PS2. 1 has a certified list of classics but the PS2 has sheer volume and variety going for it. You could trawl through the full romset every month and still find something new that catches your eye. Like this PS2 enhanced port of MDK2, I doubt people even knew this was a thing.
>>
>>12091935
>ignoring backwards compatibility
But why? This alone is reason to pick PS2 over PS1. You get both libraries so there's no need to choose between them.
>>
>>12091957
for fun mostly, makes for a more interesting question imo
>>

Crash PS1 games + CTR > Jak + Jak x
Ratchet > Spyro ps1 games
Twisted Metal Black + GOW > Twisted Metal PS1 games
Klonoa > Klona 2
FF on PS1 > FF on PS2 + kh
MGS ps2 games >MGS1
RE ps1 games + dino crisis > RE4 + DMC
SotN > ps2 castlevania games
Silent hill ps2 > silent hill ps1
Ape escape ps2 > ape escape ps1
GTA PS2 games > GTA PS1 games
THPS ps2 > Thps ps1
Spiderman PS2 > Spiderman PS1
>>
I feel PS1 has more pick up and play games, and their roughness at times is part of the appeal. PS2 is significantly more polished and more accessible these days as far as games go. They're basically matched on # of games worth playing.
>>
ps1=good games, soul, shovelware
ps2=soulless shovelware
>>
>>12092134
You niggas always cry about shovelware as if anyone's actually recommending shit like Shrek: Treasure Hunt when they reminisce about old console libraries and not the other hundreds of actual good games worth playing
>>
>>12092142

Getting a ps1 you're gonna miss out on
The Suffering
Incredible hulk ultimate destruction
Spiderman 2
Fatal frame
Silent hill 2-4
Three GTA games
Bully
Destroy all humans
The list goes on. Ps1 has a lot of kino too but the games feel a lot more arcadey.
>>
>>12092158
none of those are shovelware though

incredibly helpful, ty
>>
Ps1 has a better library and this is simply because 2d > 3d.

I tried a lot of ps2 emulation recently and turns out the only game that's really good is mgs3
>>
>>12091952
99% of ps2 games are shovelware.

PS1 goes weirder, more experimental, more eclectic, simply more choice between genres with the most experimental stuff not being available on PS2 at all.

If you like digging for obscure and/or Japan-only games, PS1 is easily the winner. I love grabbing a pile of random unknown things and discovering gems/shitpiles blindly. This is also how you'll discover how artsy the PS1 actually is, the next generation had established too many conventions and "rules" for that to repeat itself fully.

Of course a PS2 is the best option if you're only buying one console, but any model of PS1 is good to have
>>
PS2's catalogue is incredibly overrated. Overall the 6th gen kinda sucked, yes, better than what came after, but still worse than what came before.
>>
As far as libraries go I could go either way. If you had to pick one console there's no reason you'd ever pick the PS1 over the PS2 though.
>>
>>12092729
This is the correct take. The PS1 was experimental from the get-go and has a much more even representation of genres, while devs didn't figure out how to code for the Emotion Engine until 2006, which is the same year the PS3 released, prompting all the AAA devs to move on, leaving the PS2 as a budget weeb console.
>>
>>12092853
nah the ps2 has far better racing games on it
>>
>>12092634
ffx is also good. radiata stories is great and very underrated rpg. I like the first onimusha though that game is a lot better on xbox. but yeah thats basically it.
>>
>>12093434
We got ffx at home (lotr the third age on gamecube)
>>
>>12091957
Some fag will say an obscure turd "hidden gem" doesn't run properly with the backwards compat but they can be safely ignored.
>>
>>12093438
I appreciate how shameless of a clone Third Age is.
>>
If you played through backwards compatibility you didnt really play the game
>>
>>12093494
tbf tomba doesnt run on ps2, that one's fairly popular
>>
>>12091935
>ignoring backwards compatibility
Well the backwards compatibility was kinda bad anyway IIRC.
But yeah PS2. It was just a perfect bubble of 20-30 man teams running rampant with easy-to-greenlight projects. If you had to choose for some reason, pretty sure both consoles are like $30 these days.
>>
>>12094515
You don't recall correctly.
>>
in comparison my ps2 library is just 15 games. its not even close. even though admittedly a lot of these games are just translated weeb slop I was curious about but some of them are gems too
>>
>>12091935
A really tough one for me, but I'll have to give the edge to the PS1 since a lot of my all-time favourites are PS1 games:
>Final Fantasy VII
>Resident Evil
>Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
>Symphony of the Night
>Mega Man Legends 2
>>
>>12094524
No grandia? Also missing chrono trigger although it's a port
>>
>>12094770
the PSX conversion of Chrono Trigger is awful
>>
>>12091935
>ignoring backwards compatibility
Why? It solves the issue with allowing you to partake of both the PS1 and PS2's large catalogs.
>>
>>12094770
I have grandia for saturn and the snes/ds versions of chrono trigger. theres really no reason to have the ps1 version of either of those.

Perhaps Anon doesn't want to rely on emulation
>>
>>12094778
playing anything on a ps2 is soulless, simple as.
>>
>>12091935
I prefer ps1, but both libraries are fucking stellar. There is no wrong choice.

So fuck all the other consoles at the time for having multi platform games? You do know the ps1 has msdos games ported to it right? Also had a quake 2, duke nukem 3d, shadowman and doom port, so dont act like the PS1 was any better.
>>
>>12094773
who gives a damn when it's what you got
