Apple II had the most games of any 8-bit system despite the fact that it had poorer graphics and sound than the competition. It's interesting.Still a LOT of kino games were made despite that.
>early 80s computer gaming>the graphics aren't that goodBig shock.
>>12092138>Apple II had the most games of any 8-bit systemthat's such an obvious lie. why even embarrass yourself like this? it's remarkable. you're a fucking idiot.

>even basic text gives you eye-cancerI thought Steve Jobs was all about quality assurance?
we had a CGA graphics gore thread a few months back. the Apple II won

>>12092708Apple ][ project was dominated by Steve Wozniak, whose ideology was to extract maximum performance out of generic off the shelf components, no matter how insane it sounds. The entire color system on Apple ][ is built around NTSC color signal producing undesirable color artifacts, something everyone at the time wanted to minimize, but Woz was a psycho and manipulated those artifacts by building color "pixels" out of combinations of different black and white patterns creating specific shades of color noise.Later models of Apple ][ added additional functionality which allowed the computer to separate pure text and graphic areas of the screen, disabling color pixels around text characters.
>>12092708>I thought Steve Jobs was all about quality assurance?it was 1977. they didn't have much choice. they were trying to save money and use as few chips as possible.>>12092806>wondidn't win anything. commodore destroyed them, and produced one of the best selling computers in history - the c64, something apple has never been able to achieve since their founding in 1977. embarrassing.>>12093808>those ideology was to extract maximum performance out of generic off the shelf componentsno. it was to reduce the amount of chips used to cut costs>but Woz was a psycho and manipulated those artifacts by building color "pixels" out of combinationswasn't even his idea. he borrowed that from an electronics book written a year or so before apple 2 was released. he barely understood how it worked. your chatgpt slop is hilarious.
>>12092857I don't agree, you really need to craft your image around the CGA palette to have chance in hell of making it look good, and this would necessitate using heavy amounts of dithering and black. Without very high contrast shading, the image gets blown out and turns into bright and flattened mush.IMO, the old Macintosh computers that could ONLY rock black and white (no grays), but where most art used crazy amounts of dithering, ends up looking way better than almost all CGA art.
>>12092806Like if you look at just the chair Avatar is sitting in here, you can kinda see how you could work with the colors, but since the art wasn't made for CGA, the entire rest of the image is harsh to look at and not cleanly visibly readable.Taking a look at pic related, it's an example of how you would need to use shading and dithering for CGA's color palettes to not look bad. In fact, this art is very good.
>>12093981I definitely like C64 more, but Apple II lead to us eventually getting Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, and I have a soft spot for Oregon Trail.

>>12092138Isnt this when the crash happened?
>>12094908The crash had zero effect on computers. PC Games were reaching peak sales when the crash happened.
>>12094941Crash was in part caused by Commodore constantly reducing prices of its computers, making them an affordable alternative to consoles and eating away from their purchasing audience.
>>12092206Back then "has graphics" was a feature
>>12095127True, a lot of that stuff was just 100% text, because drawing good is pretty hard, and drawing good with those technical constraints is really hard. Thus, I do still appreciate those who even made the effort, even if it comes out rough.
>>12092114Wait till you see how bad Spectrum looks and the Apple 2 was 5 years older. Apple 2 performs pretty well in some game with pretty smooth animation, in the C64 the cpu is halted pretty often from the other chips.
>>12095258Apple 2 and C64 CPUs performed about the same. They're both 1MHz because the CPU and GPU had to access the same memory bus.
>>12095258For sure. The original Apple II version of Prince of Persia in particular is really impressive.
>>12095020That had absolutely nothing to do with the crash. The crash happened because you had 12 consoles that all had the same games.
>>12096393No, he's got a point. It wasn't the only reason, but there was a shift away from the "game machine" to computers, and the increasingly cheap C64 was a big part of it. Why buy little Billy a console to fry his brain on when you can get him a computer and help prepare him for The Futuret. parents bought him a C64 for that very reason
>>12096393Vectrex was pretty different teebs
>>12096393>intelle consleWhy this includes a budget redesign, a rebadged 2600 and a 2600 clone is beyond me. It's not like you have to be dishonest to drive the point home as there are plenty of unique systems to pick from that released in the US, nevermind abroad.
>>12096694Yeah, and by the time the Coleco hit the scene, the Odyssey, Channel F, and Arcadia were basically footnotes. They weren't doing well against the 2600 even back in the days when the 2600 wasn't selling well enough to keep Atari afloat yet. They're cool, and interesting from a retro-game standpoint, but they were not serious market contenders that everybody knew and talked about. As a kid, I had heard of the Odyssey2, and that was about it for non-Atari consoles in the pre-Intellivision days
>>12096393The Sears Telegame was literally a rebranded 2600 which Atari made for Sears to sell. For the others, pretty much only the Colecovision and Intellivision had any worthwhile market share.Probably the biggest contributor to the crash as a whole was Atari realizing that, oh no, making more stock than you can actually sell, and not trying to gauge your fucking market, isn't good. Thus they tried to push off their excess stock (of all kinds of games and hardware, not just E.T like the legend says), to try to stop bleeding money, which then spooked retailers and distributors who weren't even done selling what they had received.
>>12096393Atari died, so that Nintendo could crawl through the gutter to rape the corpse of console gaming back to life long enough to now rape it to death again. The wrong kid died.
>>12098369Atari was shit.
