What are the best of the best retro VNs?
>>12092258Metal Slader Glory for the SNES people hold in pretty high regard. Like up there with Policenauts. It got translated recently too.
>>12092258
>>12092258DoukyuuseiDookyuusei 2Isakut. Elf #1 fan
>>12092801The SNES remaster got translated recently. The Famicom original was translated a decade ago.
>>12092258You posted it>>12092801Policenauts is cool but Snatcher is even better.
Machi is pretty fucking kino https://vndb.org/v1360But it isn't translated. It's the predecessor to the non-retro 428 Shibuya Scramble, which was translated and also fantastic. But if you want to see what inspired it, Machi is that VN.
>>12092258>old VN>not a single one centered around feminization/trapsSuch a missed opportunity.
>>12092952Here:https://vndb.org/g388?f=032gen3gjaN1874_0bz3i&m=0&p=1&s=20yhttps://vndb.org/g421?f=032gen3gjaN1874_0bz3i&m=0&p=1&s=20yThis is a search filter for English translated VNs from before 2007 or earlier with either a trap love interest or a trap protagonist.
>>12092962>from before 2007 or earlierfrom 2007 or earlier*
>>12092962Believe me I know about that site. Even modern VNs don't have stuff like that.
>>12092826I will play this game if it's translated in english.
>>12092258Seraphita. It's the Futabu! of the 90s.
The ones that have the hardcore fucking and sucking. I'm talking pussy-slurpin, cum-squirtin, anal-excavating type of shit.
>>12092826looks like an RPG to me
>>12092258True Love. Well, okay, it's not a VN. And hitting some of the requirements is genuinely difficult.
is there a newer copypasta?I never did get around to playing Yu-No, but I've listened to the soundtrack for years.
>>12095041>only tag on Euphoria is "panic button", which is undefinedkind of mean desu
>>12092258Literally the best selling eroge of the 90shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2yYSN7sv2I
>>12093112you overcooked that one
>>12092801Is the SNES version even much of an improvement over the NES?
>>12095041if you like the yu-no soundtrack make sure you listen to umemoto's other music. https://youtu.be/dOvfINPELDg
>>12095675Care to help me out picking a new Rance game?I started with Sengoku Rance back when its translation was all the rage on /v/, more than a decade ago. Then I beat Rance VI (2017 version?) and Rance Quest Magnum. I have zero idea of the whole timeline thing, but I know it's complicated.I just want to play a nice Rance game which is:1) translated2) modern (e.g. no need to emulate a pc-98 or such)3) good
>>12092258I really liked AYAKASHI.
>>12096946No, the SNES version has a few added scenes, some slightly different colors/ character designs and different (generally considered worse) music due to copyright. Both releases are important for their respective systems, the Famicom version having the largest ROM size (1MB) of any game on the console, and the SNES version being the final release for the console.
>>12092935Never knew about this. Thanks anon, will check out
>>12097284Pretty sure you can play IX, I believe it has been translated. Or you can play 01 or 5D, those have a time/roulette/DayNight mechanic that you will love or hate. I think 03 and X are the only ones not translated at the mpment. Evenicle is a fellow Alicesoft franchise that is cool if you like Rance, similar gameplay.
>>12097829Thanks. I kinda wish I did them in order, but...>5DI think I tried this one years ago, if there's a roulette. You're stuck in a cave and have to spin that stupid thing as the main gameplay element, right? I didn't enjoy it.>EvenicleThanks, I didn't know about this but I only want to play Rance's adventures because this based retards always cracks me up.
>>12097284Play 03, it’s voiced and translated. Kichikuou isn’t modern, but it’s really good if you liked Sengoku. it’s also more serious, and you can just download and play it since it was released for windows.
>>12097968Nice, thanks.>it’s voicedLet's hope I can mute this, I hate voice acting (especially japanese).>Kichikuou That's the strategy game, right?
>>12098014>I hate voice acting (especially japanese)NTA, but shit taste.
>>12098014>That's the strategy game, right?Yup, it’s the non-canon strategy game where they threw all their future ideas into one last effort, and it sold so well that it saved them from bankruptcy. It shows how art is often born from desperate situations.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvqTxcvnO_Q
Retro VNs suck ass. They had a ton of soul but the stories were awful and the sex scenes were worseSorry but it do be that way
>>12098020Why? It adds nothings and restricts your imagination. I don't need someone to read out loud something I'm already reading.
>>12098180It adds to the immersion. VNs are not just books. I like having good visuals, choices, h-scenes, and voice acting. Each adds something nice to it.
>>12098182I really don't care about immersion. I'm just sitting in front of my computer, clicking.>>12098046Interesting, thanks!
>>12098194I absolutely hate /vr/'s general attitude on VNs, which is inexperience and general dislike for basic shit about them. And the weird dislike towards Japanese things and Western bias is also annoying, which is weird to affect a thread like this.
>>12098205You shouldn't care so much about other people's preferences. Go be a weeb somewhere else.
>>12098205he just said he doesn’t like voice acting, it’s not that deep.
>>12098217Kill yourself>>12098218>>I hate voice acting (especially japanese)Makes it pretty clear what he means.
>>12098223Lol yeah, of course it's clear. I don't speak japanese, it's pointless to hear over the top and weirdly pitched dialogues that you don't even understand.Seriously, mind your own business.
>>12098234>hear over the top and weirdly pitched dialoguesNormalfag opinions like this can be safely discarded. >I don't speak japaneseIt's part of the experience. I can't imagine consuming a foreign country's media and not being okay with hearing their language. Dubs are a cancer (yes, even when Japs do it to English language works), and just turning off the audio is missing part of the experience.
>>12098239>It's part of the experienceIt's a video game, not a trip to Japan.
>>12098251A video game with voice acting. Should a Jap turn off GTA: SA's voice track because they can just read the subtitles? Of course not. They should keep the English voices even if they don't understand it. And those who do, are retarded.
>>12098257Sorry but you're a faggot. Let people do as they please instead of seething impotently.
>>12098257japs play The Witcher 3 and other western games with japanese dubs if they are available
>>12098263>Let people do as they pleaseYeah, go for it. I'm gonna call you a retard for it if you post about it. >>12098265I'm aware. Dubs are a cancer. But sometimes (luckily) they don't get dubs and only get subbed.
To get this thread back on track. If you didn't know the very first VN got translated last year.https://vndb.org/v661>mountain road. You take the role of the young man. The young woman is named Nami. The two of you attend the same college. While driving back home from an out-of-town date, you got into an accident. The car's brakes suddenly stopped working, leaving the car totaled and the two of you clueless about where to go, until you spotted the mailbox of a nearby home. Together, you trudged through the woods, struck by the rain and trembling from the lightning. Nami was looking more and more displeased. Emerging from the woods, you found an old western-style mansion gated off with high walls. It's a horror themed one with lots of choices and branches.
>>12098297Whoops, the greentext should have started with>One summer evening, a young man and a woman were driving down a winding And then continues with what I posted.
>>12092863>I'll be returning some of my own "damaged goods"Was he in the right?
>>12098297I've been curious about playing it ever since it was translated, but never got around to it. I fear it's only going to be a mystery game instead with no horror.
>>12098340It relies heavily on the audio to create the atmosphere (hence, the sound novel branding they used). But does it actually get scary? I mean, it's a 1992 game that relies more on words and audio than the visuals. Though there are visuals of course. If you can get yourself in the right headspace it can be spooky
>>12098350 (me)>audioSince the thread went off the rails there, I want to specify that it doesn't have voice acting or anything. It's ambient, spooky sounds that fit the moment.
>>12098297I wish this one gets translated.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cTzVjLtNSg
