Was the lack of DVD playback the reason for The Dream Cast's failure?

The reason for the Dreamcast’s failure was the Saturn.

If it was. then why the Game Cube last till the end of the gen?

The PS2 was impossible to beat. It was the most hyped console ever, and the sequel to the biggest console ever. Every developer and player knew it was the easiest choice ever handed to them.

BernieBros...not like this...

Even with copy protection that worked, not a shit name that sounds like bottled water found in east europe, a dvd player and a controller that didn’t need micro jap hands, it still would have lost 500 million bucks instead of nearly a billion. However it had some good games.

It was certainly part of it but Sega's plan to crash this company with no survivors was already in motion.

Tragic.

Timely Windows CE support might've given it enough games to compete as well.

No Final Fantasy, no MGS, and no EA games. If money didn't exist or there was some governing body that outlawed exclusives, they could have won.
>>
Dreamcast was always on a timer.Every month sega burned through money they couldn't replenish. Even if it was a success, it would never have seen ps2 numbers and sega would have dropped out anyway.

Sega Japan's on going internal conflict with Sega Usa is what did it in. It was doomed before it even hit stores.
>>

Dreamcast failed because Saturn's failure almost bankrupted Sega.

They should have appealed to girls with a 3D Hello Kitty platformer as their launch game and games similar to Animal Crossing. The boy market was already taken, they should have just given up on that.

it was just too early. i didn't even have a chance to get it, so i had an Xbox instead.

The Xbox was a DC2 in all but name so its ok that you got that instead.

No, the damage had already been done by Sega Japan in the Saturn era by not delivering for the western market and having Sonic. Dreamcast had a good initial launch but the biggest problems were
>No deal with EA which meant no FIFA. Sega alternatives like UEFA dream soccer came too late and this is vital for the European market
>They had already blown too much money and couldn't compete on marketing with Sony, Okawa had to put $500 million into the company
>The online element was too soon with modems, about 9 years too early. Americans were much slower to get the Dream Key online than Europeans, about 10% to 33%
>Gaming was moving away from arcade ports, Shenmue didn't get a western release until near the end
>They didn't deliver for the Japanese audience in the way they did with the Saturn
They had already decided to go multiplatform by the time piracy was starting to become a problem

Girls weren't going to save it in that era when it's not handheld. They sold 2.5 million Dreamcast in Japan in 3 years, it didn't do badly relatively speaking when Gamecube sold 4 million lifetime
