>Darkseed General #47
>Previous thread: >>5802909

Welcome to /dsg/ - Darkseed General, the thread dedicated to discussing the psychological horror point-and-click adventure games Dark Seed (1992) and Dark Seed II (1995), developed and published by Cyberdreams. These games feature artwork inspired by H.R. Giger, blending surreal horror with puzzle-solving in parallel worlds.

**Game Overviews:**
- **Dark Seed (1992):** Play as Mike Dawson, a writer who moves into a Victorian mansion and discovers a portal to a nightmarish "Dark World." After being implanted with an alien embryo by ancient beings known as the Ancients, Mike must solve puzzles across both realities within three days to prevent the embryo from bursting out of his head. The game emphasizes atmospheric tension, timed elements, and Giger's biomechanical art style.

- **Dark Seed II (1995):** The sequel picks up after the events of the first game. Mike Dawson, recovering from a nervous breakdown, returns to his hometown and is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend Rita.
Ports were released for Windows, Mac, and even Sega Saturn in Japan.

**Resources and Guides:**
- Official Wiki: https: //dark-seed.fandom.com/wiki/Dark_Seed_Wiki (covers both games, including plot details, characters, and walkthroughs).

- Walkthroughs: Search for detailed guides on GameFAQs.

- Emulation/Play Tips: Both games run well on DOSBox or ScummVM for modern systems. Avoid the Amiga port of the first game due to inferior graphics.

**Discussion Topics:**
- Favorite puzzles or horror moments? The mirror portal reveal in DS1 or the carnival games in DS2?

- Mods or fan patches? Share any bug fixes or enhancements for FMV in DS2.
- Speedruns or challenge plays: Completing DS1 without dying to the time limit.

Keep discussions civil and on-topic. No off-topic posting or console wars over the various ports. If you're new, play the games before spoiling yourself.

What a weird fake-general.
Dark Seed was horrendous, you can softlock yourself in so many ways (don't be at your home when the delivery man rings, don't pick up some items...).
>>
Aren't general threads only for vgg anyway
>>
>>12097121
never see you posting that in the doom general mate
>>
>>12097078
Same as the Crichton threads
>>
>>12097045
Does this game really deserve its own general?
>>
>>12097285
nta and I could post more when I get home (and this'll probably be archived by then) but I love Darkseed and think it deserves one but doesn't warrant it (not enough to substantiate one)
A single good thread is perfect though so I hope it at least gets halfway to the bunp limit.

It's my personal big Halloween game next to Castlevania, play it every year and yeah there's no real point since it's a straightforward adventure game I already fully figured out eleven years ago but its atmosphere is very unique and special to me and I'd say that's the most important thing when it comes to a game like this.

I appreciate that the only darkseed fan in existence is willing to make this post. I'll be honest, I was given a copy of this game back in like 2007 by a friend and I still have it. I installed it and everything and not once in my entire life have I started it up. At this point I don't think I ever will.

Based Darkseed-er.

I really enjoyed watching a let's play of this game years ago. Trippy stuff. Great atmosphere. I am a big fan (or used to be) of adventure games, but I never play those with "dead ends".

Hey, ya missed pal.
>>
So if Jack was Mike's Dark World counterpart, how did he escape and manage to blend with society?
>>
>>12097045
>Emulation/Play Tips: Both games run well on DOSBox or ScummVM for modern systems.
This is false. ScummVM only supports the first game and only in the nightly version. Dark Seed II is not supported period.

no one interacts with Jack once, even in the fight at the pool hall it’s proven to be just Mike

>Dark Seed was horrendous, you can softlock yourself in so many ways (don't be at your home when the delivery man rings, don't pick up some items...).
It's a very short game so personally it never bothered me much but I do understand why it can be a pain, especially since there isn't a game speed dial like in Sierra games and it runs fairly slow.
And funnily enough I actually solved the last puzzle in the game by accident, since hitting the supercomputer with a crowbar electrocuted you to death I thought you had to throw the brick at it instead. I understood the hammer connection with the hole but forgot about it when I decided to use it and if that wasn't the solution I could have potentially softlocked myself.

Anyway, as I mentioned here >>12097317
I really love the unique atmosphere the game gets from the 90's nostalgia for the 50's and especially the music which I very rarely see anyone talk about (if they're talking about Darkseed at all). I think the very basic sound you get when playing it on Dosbox is actually the best way to hear the soundtrack since how understated everything is. Compare with how it sounds on the Amiga or other ports or actual hardware and it sounds much more energetic and sci-fi which I don't feel works as well. Of course it fits the Geiger artwork more but I feel that surrealism works best when you have a standard to compare it to and the music is a pretty big part of that.
The music that plays when around the house is probably one of my favorite game songs period.

Love the Library theme, too. It's very thematically appropriate for both the very beginning while you're just looking around and later when you're learning more about the house's previous owner.
People bitch about the house theme but I actually really like it, not enough to listen on its own but it's very themtatically appropriate and does set you on edge like Mike would be.

I'm playing the translated Saturn version right now. It doesn't replace the original release but it's a cool novelty. I love this game and it's based and OP is based.

The music is really nice in the light/real world town

is it just me or does the main character seem like a huge jerkoff

Does anyone know if there is a translation patch for Dark Seed for the Chinese bootleg version of the NES/Famicom?
As for the Japanese PS1 version, is there still no translation patch?

https://bootleggames.fandom.com/wiki/Dark_Seed
>>
>>12102557
Aside from Backstroke of the West potential (especially in a game with already-weird narration, see the "quaint general store"), I don't think there's any real interest since the Darkseed fandom is already pretty fucking small and while the bootleg is in some ways better known than the game itself, you'd have to find a really dedicated fan who knows Chinese and resource hacking that would be willing to do it.
>>
I like Darkseed and 2 well enough, but does it really warrant a general? Are you even allowed to make generals here?
>>
>>12097125
The Doom general is for all kindsa shootan games, not just for Doom.
