We need to make a game based on a 1930's film that commits every westformer sin possible.
retroshovel is so ludo for some reason. they aren't good but i for some reason have a lot of warm feelings towards them. the kusoge effect i guess
Imagine a Gone With the Wind or Duck Soup adaptation on the SNES... would have been pure ludo
>>12101514A Marx Brothers game would be very cool.
80's and 90's Wizard of Oz-related properties were a hilarious clusterfuck.>early 1980's>Disney gets a bug up their ass about making something Wizard of Oz so they don't have their film rights over the property expire>another lighthearted musical like the original?>no sir, instead Dorothy hasn't slept since coming back from Oz so her aunt and uncle think she's gone insane and send her to an asylum to get 'cured'>cure is going to be electroshock therapy>movie is far more dark fantasy and disturbing than the bright and colorful original>box office flop that doesn't even make back 1/3rd of it's budget>DiC gets the television rights away from Turner>says "Return to Oz shows people are still interested in Wizard of Oz, right?">makes animated series>doesn't even get a full 65 episodes for syndication, dies after 13 episodes>fucking SETA comes along and says "wow, Wizard of Oz is REALLY popular lately, better hop on that wagon!">announces game for SNES and NES>ends up only releasing SNES version>it bombs
>>12101464What the fuck is a westformer, and why are you forcing this retarded nomenclature?
>>12101803Western platformer. This is contrast to eastformer or japaformer.
>>12101828Decades from now, robots will explore Antarctica and find hidden troves of southformers buried in the ice, where the ancient fallen wendigo civilization once had its own version of the E.T.-in-the-landfill phenomenon
>>12101631There was even a JRPG for the DS I think, seems to have sold decently. Anyway Return to Oz is awesome, so at least we got that out of this mess
>>12101828A nonsensical separation. It'll never catch on. I'll make sure of it.
>>12101850Not as nonsensical as westformer level design.
>>12101631>>12101840It also had like multiple anime in the 80s alone. People just keep going back to the Oz well.
>>12101873There's so much to drag out of it after all... Baum wrote like 14 main-line Oz books apparently, and then somebody else took up the mantle and added a couple dozen more. I read a few of them as a kid but I have minimal memory of what was actually in them
it's a pretty based motionpicturevania.
What was the most common copyright protection length internationally in the 1980s? Was it 70 years after author's death, like it is today, or was it still limited to only 50 years?Regardless, L. Frank Baum died in 1919, meaning that his works would universally fall into public domain in most nations in 1989, probably causing an increased amount of Oz adaptations.
it definitely should not have been a platformer. it should have been a zelda clone or a point n click.
>>12101631There were at least 3 anime related Oz shows, the most famous being the Nippon Animation one with redhead pudgy Dorothy.
>>12102187And then there was the HBO series, which took a LOT of liberties with the story. Followed by its NES adaptation that took even more liberties
>>12101464>The Wizard of Oz (SNES)Looks cool, never heard of it before. It should have had bosses though.>WestformerSorry, but that term in inapplicable in this instance as Japanese developers (SETA here), by definition, can't make Westformers.>it definitely should not have been a platformer. I would have made it like Sim City or a base-building sim like Dungeon Keeper, where you play as titular Wizard of Oz and you have to try and create a harmonious society by balancing out the Wicked Witches of the East and West and the Good Witches of the North and South and you control the Oompa Loompas and shit, and the base-building aspect is that Dorothy comes to fuck up your shit so you have to put poppy fields in her path and stuff like that. Either that or a 1-on-1 beat'em up where you can play Dorothy or either of her three companions, or either of the witches... or a belt scroller where you basically beat the pulp out of Oompa Loompas as you travel the yellow brick road. If Natsume had gotten the license they could have used the Power Rangers engine.
>>12102280>balancing out the Witches>the base-building aspect is that Dorothy comes to fuck up your shit so you have to put poppy fields in her pathThat... sounds really cool. I would play that.
I thought AVGN was kidding or exaggerating when he showed you falling through platforms but it's real. the entire game feels unstable, like it is coming apart at the seams.
>>12102280It's not Japanese.
>>12101860Yes, so completely nonsensical, how you move from point A to point B, truly completely out-of-left-field design, who would have ever thunk that one up, or even managed to beat them?
>>12101919The books are in public domain, but the only Oz material anybody really cares about is the Judy Garland movie, and WB has such a chokehold on the rights to it that you can't even use the same shade of green for the Witch.
>>12102280SETA published it, it was developed by some studio in Washington
>>12101464Bimmy thought this game was ASS
>>12103523Go back to your pathetic stalker subreddit. Please.
