Just bought this and need some suggestions on which games to download.
I need suggestions other than pokemon (I’ve played them to death)
>>
>>12101478
I'm assuming it's capable of Gameboy and Gameboy Colour games.
There's a few obvious ones:
> Metroid II
> Link's Awakening (I think B/W is better than Colour but your mileage may vary)
> Donkey Kong (94)
And the rest:
> Wario Land 2 (I prefer colour but your mileage may vary)
> Final Fantasy Adventure
> Metal Gear Solid
> Shantae
There's some cool ports id you're interested like
> Super Mario Bros Deluxe
> Donkey Kong Country
And some cool romhacks though I mostly play Pokemon rom hacks like
> Pokemon Brown
> Pokemon Prism
> Pokemon Crystal Clear (inb4 hur-dur woke game, grow up it's fun.)
>>
>>12101490
>crystal clear
Black washing the Japanese was weird man
>>
>>12101496
It's a fun rom-hack. I can ignore things I don't like in games, you should try it sometime. Makes for a better experience.

I will always take time out of my day to at least recommend Cave Noir if you're a fan of rogue likes. It's on the simple side, but it's very addicting to pick up and play for a few minutes to a couple hours.

I went on a GB kick a year back and have explored a bit of the library, but my memory retention is ass so I'll get back with some recs that aren't the usual suspects.

Final Fantasy Adventure.
there are multiple patches to give it color now, so take your pick or just play the original.
this one seems to be the best one because it only adds color, no unnecessary changes to the game at all. though, i wish there was a patch that changed the title screen to "Legend of the Mana Sword" or "Adventures of Mana".
https://romhack.ing/database/content/entry/TT2F93LFTfa9EH0UYQEboA/final-fantasy-adventure-color

also, apply these patches to revert some stupid changes to zelda dx.

I came here to post this.

Why did you buy something without knowing what you were going to do with it?
>>
>>12101490
I already know most of those but thanks for the suggestions. I’ll check out the rom hacks
>>12101513
I enjoy rouge likes and prefer easier games so this is right up my alley.
>>12101531
Sweet I’ll check these out.
>>12101565
I was hoping for some hidden gems or games I might’ve glanced over like Cave Noir
>>
>>12101478

Play the spinoff card games, if you haven't. They're surprisingly good.
>>
>>12101478
if you like puzzles there's.
>catrap
>kwirk
>boxxle
>deadalian opus
>sutte hakkun
and more i can't remember now.

Every version of Crystal Clear before 2.0 does not have minorities in it while also still having the original battle tower. Version 2.0 and up adds minorites, replaces the battle tower with something else, but also adds pokemon following the player.
Crystal Clear V1.3b was the first version I ever played. Choose carefully.
>>
>>12101801
Legend of the River King.
Not heard of it but I'll give it a try. Thanks anon.
>>
>>12101892
For some other games you may not have heard of:
Hammering Harry
Resident Evil Gaiden
Great Greed
Rolan's Curse 2
Mega Man I thru V
Survival Kids
Mega Man X1 and X2
Pokemon TCG
>>
>>12101575

Daikatana is actually pretty solid.
>>
>>12102017
Thanks anon, I'd not heard of Rolan's Curse 2 before.

What are some unknown or rare ones you have heard of before? I'd like some recommendations from you

based on this that makes the color hack compatible with the restoration hack.

I've been getting a few random GB(C) titles lately, nothing too great or horrible and not mentioned yet. The Legend of Prince Valiant/Kingdom Crusade is a neat concept, being a simple strategy game where you control your warriors in a topdown action fashion. No story mode or scenarios to work through, just generate a match and go. Kind of stuff the GB was made for. Sneaky Snakes (2d sequel to Snake Rattle 'n' Roll) is a decent, if slippery, platformer. It does spike up its difficulty in the end.

Currently playing gen 1 Robopo(r)n, Sun specifically as that's what the vast majority would have played, but a complete English proto of Star was leaked. If you know Japanese you can play the Comic Bom Bom version which is iirc based on the manga and so some robopon breasts much more boobily, it is their equivalent to Yellow but is iirc based on the 3rd version which is also akin to Crystal.

Not gonna write a review, but it does do some interesting things. If you're using a flashcart (I don't think any support it at least), you won't be able to open remote chests. iirc one emulator has rudimentary support and there's one inconsequential post-game quest that requires it (maybe cheating the item works just as well), but otherwise it's just random goodies. The color palette is something else though, some sprites are quite suspect too...
>>
Obligatory reminder of two surprisingly good Harry Potter games on GBC. Arguably best pair of jRPGs on the system.
>>
>>12097837
>>
>>12102297
I loved Robopon as a kid waiting for his next Pokemon fix, but it probably was really just complete garbage
>>
>>12102367
Sure, it's an opportunistic clone. Probably cheaply developed too, but considering the cartridge can't say it was actually cheap to produce. Aren't all early monster collectors shit as games though? Pokémon gen 1 included. Relies a lot on imagination and other sources to add to the adventure and give your party flavor. Guess that's one benefit to being a sperg, don't lose as much of that when you age.
>>
>>12102408
>Aren't all early monster collectors shit as games though? Pokémon gen 1 included
no
>>
>>12102416
Agree to disagree.
>>
>>12102419
There are a bunch of Robopon you could never get in the west because they never released the equivalent of Blue.

Some of the type match-ups made absolutely no sense. Not only is fire not super effective against gas and/or oil, but it's.... not very effective against one of them? Whut? I never memorized the type match-ups because some of them were so counterintuitive.

It's incredibly basic compared to even Pokemon, and it's GBA sequel was a downgrade in so many ways.
>>
>>12102424
That's not what I'm disagreeing on.
>>
>>12101478
Grand Theft Auto
Super Mario Land
Castlevania: The Adventure
Earthworm Jim Menace II Society
Welcome to my Evil Lair

If you don't like these games you probably won't like any gameboy game.
>>
>>12102426
Okay, but the point is that Pokemon is objectively better than Robopon (at least for English audiences).

And I think most people would agree the OG Pokemon is an extremely well-made game, despite a few minor glitches and balance issues.
>>
>>12102446
I'm not disagreeing with it being better, but that's also not what I was asking. I'm not going to comment on the hyperbole because you just seem to want to have pokémon argument.
>>
>>12102454
Hyperbole would be calling Pokemon "shit" rather than flawed.

>I'm not disagreeing with it being better
No, you just said that Pokemon was shit, and that other early monster battlers were comparably bad. Totally different, right?
>>
Tumble Pop
The Smurfs
Heiankyo Alien
Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters
The two Sunsoft Batmans and one Konami
Trax
Avenging Spirit
Nail & Scale
Lock & Chase
Ghostbusters 2
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
007
Shamus
Crayon Shinchan 1, 2 and 3
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
Beavis & Butthead
>>
>>12102473
*meant to type Crayon shin-chan 4, 3 is kinda a whatever mini game collection
>>
>>12102465
If you'd genuinely care about the word "shit", you'd take umbrage with me calling the entire (early) genre shit which is a harsh thng to say. GB Pokémon for me is the shiniest of the shitheap so to speak. I just find the genre weak when it comes to gameplay which is why I say "as games" and that I find or create enjoyment in these games from other elements. Saying anything else would be lying or implementing a double standard.
>>
>>12102481
I don't know enough about other early GB monster games. But it sounds like you just have a personal preference and don't enjoy that genre. I can understand that's personally, I think most jrpgs are repetitive, boring, simplistic gameplay with dogshit writing, and I'll never understand the love much of them get. But I know many people feel very differently
>>
>>12102496
People are allowed to have opinions. If you don't like certain things, you shouldn't have to wave them away if they occur in popular things.
>>
>>12102193
NTA but check out Shadowgate Classic
>>
Do romhacks run fine in normal hardware? I'd like to ask for some rom hacks recommendations myself, I pretty much don't care about pokemon
>>
>>12102635
>Do romhacks run fine in normal hardware?
Overwhelmingly most hacks/translations should run just fine. Theres not ZSNES or Project64 situation where lot of hacks were made for not really accurate emus in mind, so there problem playing them back on OG hardware
>>
>>12102635
Some do, some don't, the more recent the hack the more likely it is to run on newer hardware but there are exceptions. Usually with newer hacks that don't work the hacker is aware because if some trick they used.

Bump with a suggestion:
Quest: Brian's Journey. It's a GBC demake of the N64 game and from what I can tell it's more polished/finished overall. Give it an hour and see if you like how it plays.
>>
>>12101507
>I can ignore things I don't like in games, you should try it sometime
I've tried it for the past ~15 years. I've decided it's not for me. It's easier and more fun to simply ignore games that are full of things I don't like or disagree with, even if it also has a few cool features.

There are literally hundreds of 8+/10 games I haven't even touched yet, so I don't really see the point of investing time in games I know I'll have problems with.
Especially when it's just a mod of a game I've already played and not truly unique.

Games that probably won't get listed:
Great Greed (a JRPG about saving the environment)
Namco Gallery games (basically Namco games remastered for the Super Game Boy)
Pac Man Special Color Edition - Can play this on a regular Game Boy and it has different modes ON SGB that it doesn't have on DMG OR Color, same with Ms Pac Man Special Color Edition
TMNT - Fall of the Foot Clan - 90s in a cart. Fun beat em up where you pick your favorite Turtle and get on with the show.
Color:
Mega Man XTreme - Basically an MMX game on the Color. You can play it on the DMG, but it's not that great.
Wendy - Every Witch Way - Platformer by WayForward.
N Sync - Get To The Show - This is only for the kusoge appreciator, avoid if you cannot savor it.

AVOID
Link's Awakening DX, ESP if you're playing on a DMG (why is it slower on a DMG than the original?) I also am not a fan of the color palettes. I don't give a crap about people bitching about the bonus dungeon, because... you don't have to play it.
Grand Theft Auto - Novelty of it aside this sucks balls even on the Color. YES you can play it on a SGB YES I have done so YES it's even worse
Star Ocean - There's a beta translation of this floating around out there, it's not a very good game period.
Medabots - IIRC these games had special sensors within the carts that won't boot on an ED.
Every single Simpsons game, do I really need to tell you why?

If you're interested in playing Oracle of Ages and Seasons, I suggest using the Variable Width Font (VWF) hack.
There's no changes to the content, only how the text is displayed.
Ages: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2934/
Seasons: https://www.reddit.com/r/RomHacks/comments/rxt3rg/a_variable_width_font_hack_for_the_legend_of/

Also compatible with the GBC colors fix for GBA mode, if you're playing on GBA hardware or emulators and want to access to the GBA exclusive content, without the nasty GBA color palette.
Ages: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3589/
Seasons: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3588/

that font looks like crap and it's hard to read on a small display.
most font "improvement" hacks are like that.
