So after almost 40 years I finally beat Rogue. It was a game I got obsessed with as a kid, but because it was just one of a bunch of pirated games there was no manual so I never even really knew what I was doing. But some years later it did get me way into Nethack and Tome etc. To this day Powder is one of my favorite games, but other than dabbling here or there I never really went back to Rogue itself. Fast forward a few weeks back there was a Rogue thread which inspired me to finally try it again. These days though I only really play handheld stuff and my PSP mostly just has console ROMs so when I saw there was a version available on Switch for cheap I went for it. Turns out it's one of the worst ports of a game I have ever played, buggy to the point of being nearly unplayable. There is this weird letter wheel which you use to select which item in your inventory that about half the time just doesn't work. Not so bad when you go to drink a potion and it thinks you were trying to drink a scroll. Less good when you go to throw a dart but end up throwing a potion of healing. There is also one scroll type which if you read it causes an error that crashes the game. That kind of shit is riddled throughout.
Despite all this I beat it, and not only did I beat it, I apparently now hold the world record for this shitty shitty port. I don't consider it a huge accomplishment considering the list of other winners are all different people implying anyone who actually did suffer through the entire thing never went back to it.
You should try Brogue, it's kind of an enhanced modern Rogue but it stays true to the spirit of the game. Congratulations on beating the game, I never have lol. What was your gear like when you finished?
It pains me to think of referring to it as a roguelike, but semantics aside, as games of this sort go it's actually pretty easy. I would say about on par with Fatal Labyrinth or a naked Shrien with a good weather forcast. Far easier than Powder which actively tries to fuck you over at every turn. Not many items will screw you over when testing them so it comes down to getting lucky with finding a few sets of armor until you're either far enough down that Aquators stop spawning or you're strong enough to take them naked and then having a few good wands. I had two wands of polymorph, one of cancelation and a couple slow monster monster which I used to just run away got me through the dragons, griffons and medusas. I never got any attack wands this run. Another very lucky thing was finding a two handed sword on the third floor which got upgraded several times. This was my loot at the end
>>12102608Ohh yes, Brouge is awesome. I've had many happy hours with it.
>>12102604I don’t care.
>>12102634Nice. You get hit by some acid monsters or just get a shit RNG for armor?
>>12102645Yeah my armor had been pretty good at one point, but on the way back up I was strong enough that I didn't have to worry once I was running into Aquators which are what rust your armor. Speaking of which, in theory leather armor is immune to their attacks but not in this version. Also you can only ever equip one ring at a time. It gives you an option to put a ring on either your left ir right hand, but if you put one on your left hand then another on your right the left one automatically falls off. This is the scroll I came to refer to as the scroll of delete game. It brings up this dialog box, but you can't choose. The whole game simply freezes.
>>12102604>These days though I only really play handheld stuffA fate worse than death.
>>12102653kek sounds like a wacky variant
>>12102657I'm in my 50's and busy with all kinds of other stuff. Games being things I play handheld mostly in bed at night is just fine. It's mostly all old stuff anyway.>>12102658It sure is. My understanding having looked into it some is it seems to be a rom of the Amiga version they dumped for a quick buck and never even play tested.
>>12102672>I'm in my 50's and busy with all kinds of other stuff. Games being things I play handheld mostly in bed at night is just fineActually bad for you at that age. Time to accept aging and get better habits.
>>12102672>rom of the Amiga versionDisk image?
>>12102681>nooo you can't play video games
>>12102681Better stop posting then :)
>>12102845>>12102939No, I mean lying in bed while staring at a tiny screen is bad for you. It's an old man thing, gotta worry about circulation at our age.
>>12102604tf does pete buttigieg have to do with rogue
>>12102681>>12102949Your fake concern is cute, but I am very active and in quite good shape for my age half an hour before sleep at night is hardly that bad of a vice.
Is there any console port of rogue? I don't wanna play it on a pc / emulator/ old computer.
>>12102604Congrats OP. I don't know how many people can say they've beaten it.
>>12102604Now try Dwarf Fortress.
>>12103048Not fake concern, I see plenty of people with neck issues from using phones in bed. Good that you're in shape, stay that way, but it's better to practice good habits and sit upright while gaming.
>>12103870Beds can be like this now. Won't be bad for your neck with the support.
>>12103889That's not as good as laying on your side with a pillow between your legs while playing. It's the resting the device on your chest or lap and looking down at it that causes issues, since holding your arms at eye level would be tiresome. Mobile/handheld gaming just isn't very healthy. I know this wont stop people though, which is fine for me. More money of theirs in my pocket.
>>12103870>>12103901To be fair I don't lay in bed with my neck crinked like that. I've actually always just preferred handheld over console or computer games. Partly it's because I'm also this guy and have always hated CRTs of all kinds so even the original Gameboy was wonderful just in that I could play games without having to look at that glaring light. But also the convenience just appeals, in the old days I commuted a lot via train so it was perfect and now it just works for late at night or when my wife is watching something interesting enough to stay in the room for but not so much I actually care. Also point of irony, I have bad ADHD so always looked for active jobs, construction, urban farming etc. Now I work as a facilities coordinator for a bunch of tech bros where even though other than one VP and the finance guy I'm older than almost everyone by at least a decad, I'm also the strongest and fittest and the one everyone needs to move shit around because most of them can't even squat let alone lift something with a squat so they try to move a 20 liter pail and throw their backs out. It's a little comical.>>12103089There is a ZX Spectrum one apparently, but if you're set on playing original hardware good luck with that. I would just recommend Fatal Labyrinth for Genesis which is pretty much just Rogue altered just enough to not infringe on copyright. Dragon Crystal is apparently similar but I've barely played it.Another note with this version of Rogue, Fatal Labyrinth, Shiren and other console roguelike games from the retro era, none of them have randomly generated levels. I have seen in this Rogue as well as the others mentioned the exact same levels with the same items in the same places pop up repeatedly. I believe it's just a limitation of old hardware so how they had to code it to make the games work.
>>12104158>Another note with this version of Rogue, Fatal Labyrinth, Shiren and other console roguelike games from the retro era, none of them have randomly generated levelsThat's mega-lame. The Amiga version you say it was ported from had randomly generated levels, I don't know why they'd take that out.>>12103089Rogue was a computer game from the 70s, there's no reason to play it on a console. The UI will be awful, because it was designed for a full keyboard.
>>12102604I can forgive Rogue for having problems since it's from freaking 1980, but man there is way too much RNG. Don't get enough food? You die. Don't get strong wands to deal with strong enemies? You die. Get attacked by multiple creatures, or just one dragon or griffin? You die.Still an amazing achievement for its day, and inspired countless imitators over the decades.
