>>1210610812.5fps vs 60fps.
>>12110574The refrest rate on a CRT on a spectrum is 50 fps although there were rare NTSC ones and Timexes and clones that did NTSC I'm not knowledagebale on them. There were about 40 million clones of the spectrum made but only about five milliion spectrum 16/48/48+/tosatrack sold by sinclair, I don;t know how many of the +2, +2a, +3 amstrad sold but it must have been quite a bit another few millions. The mazing thing about the spectrum was its longevity, it released in 1982 but there were still versions on sale and clones being develped in the 90s and software being written for it for a solid decade.
>>12110472There is no >the sticking point's for AmericansOnly if you are talking about normies. All the US people I knew who were working on writing games and making harwdare knew about it, in fact it was the ZX80/81 that innspired Jack Tramiel to make the ViC 20 when he saw it breaking to the home market on a visit to the UK on the flip side Clive Sinclair was inspired by chips he saw in the US. We all considered people like Bushnell and Decuir, Wozniak, Curry and Gates (yes Gates, he was a gifted coder) Sir Clive as genuises and did not give a fuck where they were from. It was a very international community back in those days, what really mattered was which processor you knew assembly for the Z80 or 6502. The spectrum has a lot of strenght in its hackability the commodore was more a finished product but it cost a LOT more and was a less elegant PCB.
>>12110569based, nintendo bad

>>12110697I dunno if Nintedo is bad or if it was just a troll culture based round it but their fanboys seem fucking awful and pig ignorant about old systems or retro gaming pure braindead tribalist shit packed full of retards all 80s systems and games are massively interconnected and cross linked all over the place just by the chips used people often wrote stuff on one system with the same CPU and then ported the assemply across using hardare tacks onto others and tweaked it. The old school guys started soldering together their own machines, all of them and were always interested is what was going on with other systems. I have a few nintedo bits but they are just one piece inn a massive jigsaw of innovation and creation and pretty irrelevent in the early 80s and a lot of places. That to one aise even in arcades I always thought donkey kong sucked though and put my coins in other machines. The Japanese and UK games industries were massively interconnected in the 80s and 90s and tendie fanboys just don;t seem to have the knowledge or understanding to appreciate that. Zelda bores the shit out of me. It's like someone endelessly posting only about monty mole and that alone. The spectrum really wa sthe home of the platformer for years, there were hundreds of great platfromers written for it and I don't give a shit about mario, it was not original or fresh when it game out and it was never anything that special. The only thing I like is using audio cassetes as data tapes. Especially considering how magnetic tapes had such a long history as backup storage for servers into the 2000s.Also if you didn't have a video camera that recorded on audio cassettes your childhood kinda sucked. Even VHS has extra personality because you can visually see how much is spooled to the left or right, like pages of a book.

did the zx have rpg games? It seems the majority of the library are single screen games
>>12111062Some, but keep in mind that CRPGs weren't an established genre a the time of the spectrum launch, so you get a lot of games with RPG elements (or proto-RPGs) that you wouldn't categorize as full fledged CRPGs.

>>12110814Strange but true I all the cassettes I have acquired still work. I get a kick out of loading them, the proplems are not the tapes, you need to clean the heads on the old tape players with isoproply and a cotton bud as well as the capstains although many people just plug in an SD card reader and have done I like loading them up, its part of the experience

The speccy has some great games, it's very limited but so is the Atari 2600, I just don't get why it makes some people so mad. You can have a lot of fun emulating it with modern conveniences like you can beat Batman with saves and a map and you can give yourself infinite chances on Manic Miner and It's still going to be a steep uphill battle but with a lot of charm in its simplicity. And it has a fuck ton of text adventures that you can play with zero loading time.

>"Most Americans aren't really familiar with it but the Sinclair ZX Spectrum is probably the most underrated microcomputer in history. What is lacked in raw power and graphics it more than made up for in heart and soul. Plus if one was a good enough programmer, you could get performance equal to or better than not only Commodore 64 but also the NES, despite graphical limitations. This opened the foot for some truly special gameplay and unique titles. John Romero used to program on a Spectrum as a kid when his father waa stationed in England and I am told Tim Sweeney somehow got his hands on one as a kid as well."-John Carmack, programmer of Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and Quake, interview 1996

>>12114473I've beaten Manic Miner without cheating. It's easier than it looks, you should try. Very satisfying when you finally get it right. In the end it's just memorisation.
>>12111123It's more of a strategic wargame. It doesn't really have the features you'd normally associate with RPG's like experience points or levels.
>>12115216I've been playing the android version recently and the closest I can compare it too is like a first-person Warlords (Lords of Midnight was one of Fawkner's favorite games too) but there's really nothing quite like it. I love the whole "Gondor calls for aid"/recruiting-allies gameplay in Singleton's games.
>>12115293It's kind of a distant relative of Japanese SRPG games like Shining Force and Fire Emblem. Those even have the 'recruiting allies' part, sort of, but usually in a more scripted way. You could trace the origin of the genre to Lords of Midnight though I'm unsure if the Nip developers ever played it. They're all kinda inspired by tabletop anyway, even D&D started out as more of a war game than adventure game.

>>12122243You can recuit people and swich between characters, you start with four each has personal characteristics and can have riders and men that move with the around the map. They can reciot additional men from keeps and citidels so you can move resources form character to character. The enemy pours down from the North, as inspired from the armies pourig from mordor by Toklien. As the characters move accross the landscape they can enoughter a variety of places and wildlife and search them but also see the enemies armies in the distance (or even right beside them when you can attack them or they attack you!). There are citadels and keeps and in them you can station men and enter and charachers and armies at them to create strong points. You take your turn and move each character and take their actions as they pass accross the landscape and delcare night during night battles are resolved and the witchkings forces movethere is also a solo quest run solution akin to frodo taking the ring to mount doom. The sequel doomdarks revenge ups the complexity, factions and character count along with map size and graphics quality (they change depending on the time of day). Give it a go. The original came with a keyboard overlay, map and mini novel. The game mechanic is outstanding. It would be great if a modern game was made using the mechanics. Mike SIngleton sadly died and his family holds copyright.

Were there any games that actually took advantage of the 128K? I remember some games had extra levels but that seemed to be about as far as it went.
>>12123534Hundreds.Go to spectrumcomputing and search for 128k only. Also pretty much anything using the AY soundchip, since the addon for the 48k wasn't commonplace.
