Best-looking retro hardware? For me, its picrel, Famicom or 2nd-model Saturn.

the best thing about the duo is that it actually FEELS high quality, the console has weight to it, the lock switch and open button have feedback and are satisfying to press, and the drive noises are extremely quiet even when its reading from the disc
the famicom looks cool on the surface but when you actually have it in your hands it's extremely light and just feels like a cheap plastic toy

While I have fond memories with the US version of the Duo, I think its Japanese counterpart looks slightly better with the aqua and lavender accents.

The European Mega Drive and Mega CD 1 model. It was a cleaner design than the Japanese version and the tower of power was incredibly cool as a kid, making it look like a hi fi system tower that was so popular in that era

i like the all-black, it brings out the shapes well, but those highlights are really nice on JP mega drive. Also i fogrot to mention sega mark iii

Super Famicom, Turbo Duo, original model PC Engine and honestly the Atari 2600

Worst is the Nintendo 64

Tasteful minimalism. The mix of off-center and symmetrical elements - the two side vents next to the Turbo Duo plate, the line tracing from the middle of the power switch, over the hucard lid, across the front to the eject button, the lock and busy indicator within the line. Unfathomnably sexy. Perfect design.

Soulless slop. I want my games and consoles to look like games and consoles.
Turning everything into a smooth black box has been the worst thing to happen to design this generation.

1000 dollars more than the cost of buying a Mega Drive and Mega CD separately, just for some light-up skechers and a motorized CD tray that breaks easily

I love the slim versions of the Playstation and Playstation 2 like you wouldn't believe

The Playstation/PSONE kind of has that "frutiger aero" look to it that all the kids are so hot about ontop of looking cute

and the PS2 Slim is just pure fucking black sexiness. I mean how much more black could it be? And the answer is none, none more black

I find the all-black to be subtle, meant to fade into an entertainment setup. However the highlight colors are a lot more inviting to me to interact with the buttons/switches which is a bit more playful. As for the Wondermega, it really comes alive with its lights. The Mark III is alright, but I do prefer the Master System look. As for the Famicom and Saturn, I prefer the US toploader look and I also prefer the first model Saturn more than the 2nd. However, you did forget the original briefcase set of the PC-Engine being amazing looking.

>>12114056
It is the model with the turbo switches for the controllers, also available in an orangey-red. Someone said the TwinFamicom systems has an improper mix of the audio from the disc system and cartridge audio, but it seems okay to me since I don't have a comparison basis. I still have to research and hope to find someone able to modify it to the proper levels if true.

>INTERFACE UNIT

1980-1990s consumer electronics just had the best font and wording splattered all over. I hate this new minimalism shit.
>>
>>12114858
>non yellowed pc engine combo

>>
>>12114152
I wonder if a discount Saturn unit from an alternate universe where it was successful would look like this.
>>
I prefer the 1st model Saturn over 2nd one. See how the colors just make the looks of the system pop.

>>12114892
It is a design rule to avoid more than 3 fonts on a single object in western design philosophy. In fact most designers would prefer to limit it to 2 since 1 singular font is ideal. If more than 1 font is used, it would be best to relegate to subtle icons away from the focus hidden in the corners. Whereas I see the opposite with non-western design focusing on more of a mandala art style in an overload of information. Just look at Japanese ads or newspapers, it just feels so cramped for space as a design philosophy. Just count the amount of fonts used there, it is almost information overload to give a perception of coolness reminiscent of 80s mecha design.

>>12114897
It is still yellowed. Compare the plastic to the sheet of paper. I had no idea back then exposing it to air and sunlight would yellow my beloved PCE, SNES, ROB, and old computing devices. I'd love to have someone perform the de-yellowing process to my stuff, but it is a lot and I doubt I'd be able to save up enough much less find someone willing to do the work.

It's not a GameCube that plays DVDs. It's a GameCube and DVD player sharing the same case but not all the same cables if doing both with their highest quality output. It also cost more than buying both separately which is why it flopped

Nah, I smell cope. I enjoy using my stuff every week. Its real joy to use and I get great pleasure and happyness from it. Everyone can like doing their own thing though, always allowed. For much of the 90s and 00s up to about 2014 it was not 'consumerism' either. The stuff was basically free if you took it away because people wanted rid of it ands were willing to clean it or liked repairing it for fun.

I mean, back then you were at the cutting edge of technology and everything was so different. Nowadays while it may feel neat to watch Laserdiscs or play the niche consoles or whatever, it's just not the same.
While it would be cool to own, I really just wish I could have experienced those years as an adult too.
