Best-looking retro hardware? For me, its picrel, Famicom or 2nd-model Saturn.
the best thing about the duo is that it actually FEELS high quality, the console has weight to it, the lock switch and open button have feedback and are satisfying to press, and the drive noises are extremely quiet even when its reading from the disc the famicom looks cool on the surface but when you actually have it in your hands it's extremely light and just feels like a cheap plastic toy
>>12111487While I have fond memories with the US version of the Duo, I think its Japanese counterpart looks slightly better with the aqua and lavender accents.
>>12111521>it's extremely lightput some rocks in it
The European Mega Drive and Mega CD 1 model. It was a cleaner design than the Japanese version and the tower of power was incredibly cool as a kid, making it look like a hi fi system tower that was so popular in that era
>>12111548i like the all-black, it brings out the shapes well, but those highlights are really nice on JP mega drive. Also i fogrot to mention sega mark iii
>>12111487for me, its the psone
>flat black>no detail >no color>literally just a flat black piece of plastic Wow. I fucking hate it.
>>12111869"no detail"? Need to get your eyes checked, anon?
>>12111487Super Famicom, Turbo Duo, original model PC Engine and honestly the Atari 2600Worst is the Nintendo 64
>>12111906and this one
>>12111901>holy shit you can see the line indents from the disc tray and memory card holderwow, so much detail.
>>12111906Japanese toiletpilled
>>12111913Tasteful minimalism. The mix of off-center and symmetrical elements - the two side vents next to the Turbo Duo plate, the line tracing from the middle of the power switch, over the hucard lid, across the front to the eject button, the lock and busy indicator within the line. Unfathomnably sexy. Perfect design.
>>12111487The correct answer is the Net Yaroze edition of the original PlayStation.
>>12111947>minimalism Soulless slop. I want my games and consoles to look like games and consoles. Turning everything into a smooth black box has been the worst thing to happen to design this generation.
>>12111487Still the 2600 for me. The wood grain, the ribs, the fat catridge port, it's perfection.
>>12112013The Channel F feels more raw to me.
>>121119061000 dollars more than the cost of buying a Mega Drive and Mega CD separately, just for some light-up skechers and a motorized CD tray that breaks easily
>>12112024I've never heard of this console before in my life. But it looks rad, you make a solid argument.
>>12111997"this generation?" this is /vr/, you can talk about that stuff elsewhere>>12112024Yeah, these 1st and 2nd gen consoles were really out to sea before things grew towards the standard box shape. I love the integrated controllers of picrel and the Intellivision
>>12112028Youre poor, got it.
I love the slim versions of the Playstation and Playstation 2 like you wouldn't believeThe Playstation/PSONE kind of has that "frutiger aero" look to it that all the kids are so hot about ontop of looking cuteand the PS2 Slim is just pure fucking black sexiness. I mean how much more black could it be? And the answer is none, none more black
Zork, Adventure (Colossal Cave), MUD, Dungeon
>>12112202Have fun paying $5000 to play Virtual Bart
>>12111487Japanese Mega Drive "Model 2"."Wondermega" Mega Drive >>12111906"Net Yaroze" PlayStation >>12111970
>>12114043Also the Dreamcast and the japanese white Saturn.
>>12112028We're discussing aesthetics here, not economy.
>>12111548First time I see that black Famicom. Curious.
>>12111487Nobody told me this bitch filters out most of the bass from its own audio
Love the Sega CDX/Multi-Mega. Nice and compact.
coolest looking HMD ever
>>12114056That's a Sharp Twin Famicom. It also came in red.
Easy.
>>12111487
I've always liked the look of this old Sony MSX2.
this thread seemed to be deleted, and now it's back, including my own post?or was that just a dream while i was sleeping and farting yesterday?
>>12111806I find the all-black to be subtle, meant to fade into an entertainment setup. However the highlight colors are a lot more inviting to me to interact with the buttons/switches which is a bit more playful. As for the Wondermega, it really comes alive with its lights. The Mark III is alright, but I do prefer the Master System look. As for the Famicom and Saturn, I prefer the US toploader look and I also prefer the first model Saturn more than the 2nd. However, you did forget the original briefcase set of the PC-Engine being amazing looking.>>12114056It is the model with the turbo switches for the controllers, also available in an orangey-red. Someone said the TwinFamicom systems has an improper mix of the audio from the disc system and cartridge audio, but it seems okay to me since I don't have a comparison basis. I still have to research and hope to find someone able to modify it to the proper levels if true.
>>12114858>INTERFACE UNIT1980-1990s consumer electronics just had the best font and wording splattered all over. I hate this new minimalism shit.
>>12114858>non yellowed pc engine combonoice
>>12114152I wonder if a discount Saturn unit from an alternate universe where it was successful would look like this.
I prefer the 1st model Saturn over 2nd one. See how the colors just make the looks of the system pop.>>12114892It is a design rule to avoid more than 3 fonts on a single object in western design philosophy. In fact most designers would prefer to limit it to 2 since 1 singular font is ideal. If more than 1 font is used, it would be best to relegate to subtle icons away from the focus hidden in the corners. Whereas I see the opposite with non-western design focusing on more of a mandala art style in an overload of information. Just look at Japanese ads or newspapers, it just feels so cramped for space as a design philosophy. Just count the amount of fonts used there, it is almost information overload to give a perception of coolness reminiscent of 80s mecha design.>>12114897It is still yellowed. Compare the plastic to the sheet of paper. I had no idea back then exposing it to air and sunlight would yellow my beloved PCE, SNES, ROB, and old computing devices. I'd love to have someone perform the de-yellowing process to my stuff, but it is a lot and I doubt I'd be able to save up enough much less find someone willing to do the work.
For me, it's the fz-10.
>>12114043>>12114152I also kind of like the Majesco "Model 3", really compact and cute
>>12114640would.
>>12116291wtf
>>12114605LameCube if the world was epic
>>12114605It's not a GameCube that plays DVDs. It's a GameCube and DVD player sharing the same case but not all the same cables if doing both with their highest quality output. It also cost more than buying both separately which is why it flopped
>>12111906If I weren't poor, I'd say that looks cool as fuck, but I am, in fact, poor, so I'll just call it gay and a waste of money.
>>12116338sticky keys
It's crazy how much cool stuff you could buy if you were wealthy in the 90s
>>12111558Gay as fucking fuck
atari with the wood grain~!
>>12118608yeahsometimes I start thinking about all the cool stuff I could buy today that I will appreciate having in the future, but then I remembereverything is available digitally, machines are all featureless black boxes and slabsit's good, though. keeps my consumerism in check
>>12111487I just bought picrel, CIB and recapped :D
>>12111487>Best-looking retro hardware?Honestly? The original rubber keyed spectrum is a design classic. Everything is perfect from the font down to contour. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Dickinson
>>12111558Josh?
>>12122125>>12111558Fun fact"Dickinson met Apple founder Steve Jobs numerous times as they shared ideas for the MacBook in 1994."
>>12121324Nah, I smell cope. I enjoy using my stuff every week. Its real joy to use and I get great pleasure and happyness from it. Everyone can like doing their own thing though, always allowed. For much of the 90s and 00s up to about 2014 it was not 'consumerism' either. The stuff was basically free if you took it away because people wanted rid of it ands were willing to clean it or liked repairing it for fun.
>>12118687>>12118687>>12122131I only posted that for the invevitable "mac le bad >:((" (You)sHow do y'all feel about the Power Mac G4 and Power Macintosh G3?
>>12111592Jesuschrist. What's the third floor? O_O
>>12111910I don't know much about the X68000 but I can say without a doubt that everything shown in your picture is probably the most expensive original setup of any console posted here.
>>12121324I mean, back then you were at the cutting edge of technology and everything was so different. Nowadays while it may feel neat to watch Laserdiscs or play the niche consoles or whatever, it's just not the same. While it would be cool to own, I really just wish I could have experienced those years as an adult too.
>>12122552That should about answer it.
>>12122663What's a few thousand dollars for a handful of arcade perfect ports?
>>12122663spoiler alert: that isn't his setup. gorgeous nevertheless
