Am I misunderstanding something or do I only get to actually play this game once every 10 minutes while the rest of the time it plays itself?

The first three battles determine the course of the game. If you reach level 8 prior to finishing the third battle, you play for a different faction entirely.
>>
Why have I never even seen this game mentioned before? It looks like it's probably too interesting to go unmentioned for so long.
>>
Giant magical armors or giant mechas?

It's very very very very hard:

1. You can't grind, so you have to CAREFULLY spread experience across the party using only the battles provided during the story. Oh, by the way, characters have a tendency to die permanently during the course of the plot, so if you shared experience with them, you're just fucked sorry.

2. You manually upgrade your characters' stats, and when they hit certain stat thresholds, they unlock abilities. But the game doesn't tell you how to unlock those abilities, so you might go the entire game getting hardly anything because you didn't upgrade the correct stats. The game is too hard to let that happen, so you'll never finish it.

Sounds based as hell, and I'm on a big mech kick right now.
>you'll never finish it
I will, and I'm not gonna look shit up
>>
>>12112097
Wrong, the game has more than two branching paths.
>>12113021
Not the anon you're replying to, but it's not that hard.
Shame about some abilities requiring cryptical stats tresholds, but I'm sure you'll manage.
You should make a thread and lets us know, how it goes, it should be interesting :)

I noticed that in between battles you can "Interview" your party, and they'll occasionally give you a hint on what stats to upgrade for certain abilities - though it seems like you can only receive each message once, so you gotta pay attention to what they say.

Sure, once I'm further in and have more to add to the discussion, I plan to.
Really enjoying it so far, which is nice because I've had choice paralysis on what to play these past few days.

Also, by permanent character death, did he just mean your standard JRPG story-related character deaths? Or do I have to autistically keep everyone alive through each battle?
Because I have been lol.

>in between battles you can "Interview" your party
Right. You can talk up to three times between every missions, and it changes the morale (relationship) between the characters, which leads to different endings (on top of other choices in dialogues/missions).
Some dialogue choices also change morale, as well as some actions taken during battles (e.g. being destroyed will lower the morale of the unit).

Yes.

I bought a strategy guide for this game but it seemed so autistic I actually never bothered to buy it. I should try it out some day.
>>
>>12112451
There's too much tedious Jap dev autism and shit game mechanics for it to be fun. Of course if you're an autist who likes shit game mechanics it's right up your alley, so at least half of anons on this board would recommend it.
>>
>>12112953
did working designs fuck with it, or was it like this to begin with?
>>
>>12112953
I found it really easy, most tactics games don't give you much defensive options when you get attacked but this game gives you 3: dodge, defend and countering. Those Sharking fuckers are annoying though.
>>
>>12114413
>>12114419
It's a fair standard tactical RPG, there's nothing complex. Not even an elemental/class weakness system.
>>
>>12114419
Like what? I'm ~3 hours in and haven't felt this way. Like the other anon said, it's a fairly standard tactical RPG.
My biggest complaint so far has nothing to do with the gameplay, and more so to do with the fact that - so far - the mechs haven't played a role in the story at all. So far it's just your standard JRPG story (Evil kingdom, princess rebels, etc).
Hopefully this changes. If I hit 10 hours and the mechs still haven't even been mentioned, I'll probably drop it.
>>
It gives me Front Mission 3 vibes... It's a heavy text based game?
>>
>>12115903
Quite, but nowhere near as much as Front Mission 3.
