Have you ever heard a rumor that you tested only to discover it was a lie? Did you ever accept failure and move on, or did you incessantly try for AGES?What was your white whale?

>>12113749Did you ever manage it?
>>12113678It is really weird that there is a bespoke truck graphic just out of view, and that you can only get to that little area by sequence breaking getting surf from a trade. Also, the missingno glitch *was* real, after you tried that it felt like anything could have been true.
>>12113678Honestly these were a dime a dozen back in the day and most of them were totally retarded and preposterous in their demands. Almost as retarded as the people who believed them. A few of these were true as well. Noob Saibot and Reptile in Mortal Kombat were rumors before they became reality. And it was a really cool thing when they did that imo. But that's about it and about the extent of my participation in this subject. Most of these dumb things were posted on unofficial sources such as websites. Most gamers who weren't retarded relied strictly on codes posted from official sources and cheat books.
Have you ever made the same thread over and over? Did you ever accept failure and move on, or did you incessantly try for AGES?
Someone in school said Mr Hippo from Punch Out could get up when you knock him down and he would have a whole new move set.
>>12113678you can unlock team ed edd n eddy in sonic heroes
>>12113871>It is really weird that there is a bespoke truck graphic just out of view, and that you can only get to that little area by sequence breaking getting surf from a trade.Yeah, Gen 1 Pokemon had just enough jank and mystery that you could easily believe there was something bigger hiding just under the surface.I always wondered why that truck was there, and assumed there had to be a reason for it being accessible, but given everything I've learned about gamefreak since I was a kid, it's not hard to believe they'd just leave a unique asset hidden out of view unless you break sequence.
>>12113678I always remember hearing you could get to the roof of the castle in Mario 64 without getting all 120 stars to unlock the nearby cannon. It actually WAS possible, but I spent hours and hours trying to wall kick my way up there and couldn't quite manage it. The rumor was that if you DID get up there before collecing all the stars, Yoshi would give you a super secret turbo triple jump or some new power-up hat or Luigi or something. Obviously that part was untrue.
>>12113678Getting all 151 Pokémon (including Mew) makes you "dateable" and the game turns into a hidden eroge where you can romance any of the game's Pokégirls.
Not really a rumor but someone told me the way to get into Gerudo Valley in Ocarina of Time was by using the Gerudo mask that you unlock in the mask selling sidequest. I got stuck in OoT for months at a time back in the day, mostly because I was younger but also because I just didn't have experience with a game like it before and didn't have access to the internet or a guide, so I didn't know any better. I'd put the mask on and talk to every NPC I could access, Id try running around with the chicken thats in the area in an attempt to give it to them while wearing the mask to see if that did anything. Even after figuring out it wouldn't get me in, once I did get in there I still assumed it had to do something with one of the characters in there so I just kept wearing it. I was convinced they wouldn't just put an item in the game that literally didn't do anything.Nowadays I'm not retarded and can finish the game with my eyes closed but I kinda long for those days of truly not knowing how to progress in a game and having no way out other than figuring it out for yourself or trying something you overheard from someone else. Truly haven't experienced that since I was a kid.
>>12114045nobody ever thought that, you're just writing out some weird fantasy of yours and pretending it's on topic
>>12113678My neighbor saw a trick to make Lara Croft naked in the first Tomb Raider in a gaming magazine and we spent like, half an hour trying to make it work. It was something about jumping on water and doing a button combination then pressing start. We thought we didn't do the combination fast enough, or did it too fast.>>12114013>Gen 1 Pokemon had just enough jank and mystery that you could easily believe there was something bigger hiding just under the surface.Fighting games were full of that sort of thing. You didn't have an in-game movelist like today yet you're already used to random arbitrary button combinations giving you fatalities or unlocking secret characters. So when someone tells you that a random combination makes Motaro playable in MK3 or that you can play as the boss version of Bison in Alpha 3 you just believe it.
>>12114045>>12114083My schoolyard version is that it was Misty, and it was Green Version-only which is why it didn't leave Japan.
>>12114079I got filtered for months in OoT because I didn't know the river led to Zoro's domain and never bothered to follow it upstream...
>>12113871>you can only get to that little area by sequence breaking getting surf from a trade. You can just leave at least one trainer around and then lose to them on purpose to respawn in town so the SS Anne doesn't leave. This trick was posted on every pokemon rumor site on angelfire.
>>12114340All it was, was a remnant of the Capsule Monsters period of development. I think they canonized an actual secret under the truck in Yellow or FireRed/LeafGreen, but it was some common item.
>>12113761Unfortunately not, but I saw it.
>>12114079Games lasted me months if not years back then. It took me years to beat zelda 3, and months to beat ocarina. Adventure games took a year or two as well. There was an ethic against guides and stuff back then, and we never felt entitled to complete a game like today.
>>12114018There's a bunch of ways to get up there. The easiest is to just triple jump up the hill to the right of the castle and then do a slide jump from the hill to the roof. My favorite though, is to BLJ off the steep geometry by the lake and use hyper speed to double jump across the map onto the castle.
>>12113968who the fuck said that>>12114018>Anon never got goodthat's a sad story
For me the inverse happened with Mega Man X's hadoken. I thought it was just some bullshit, but I tried it and lo and behold, it worked.
>>12114305Some smug fuck at my school when I was 10 insisted that there was a Playstation game called Nude Raider that was just Lara Croft lying there naked and you could move her about and pose her. I used to think about it and get a little stiffy.
>>12114657>I used to think about it and get a little stiffy.so his plan worked
>>12113678I don't think I was ever given a specific thing that you needed to do to unlock it, but one kid used to swear that Pikachu was in Mario Kart 64, which, was improbable but not completely impossible

>>12114083>>12114315Yeah now that you mention it, I think I did hear rumors like "In the Japanese version you can date Misty" at the height of pokemania. Most of the schoolyard rumors were just obvious pranks though, variations on delete all your items and party members and softlock yourself in a certain location. Anyone with half a brain didn't even try those.

Here's one that turned out to be true:People used to talk about accessing a secret World 9 in Super Mario Bros. Unbeknownst to me, you actually can go to World 9 (and all 256 possible wolds) using a trick that involves hot swapping to and fro a copy of Tennis. Apparently knowledge of this was widely circulated in Japan and SE Asia. So much so that it was referenced in Super Mario Bros. 2 with the addition of a non-glitch secret World 9 that's loosely modeled after the one in SMB1.That this exists at all is pretty crazy when you consider how much had to go right be sheer coincidence. There had to>Be a game that lets you manipulate the memory that controls the continue function without overwriting the memory that affects the cold boot check>Have that game be something very common>Have someone randomly discover the glitch by hot swapping cartridges>Have World 9 actually be something interesting and not just one of the numerous worlds that crashes the game or is a copy of another world
>>12113871the truck was actually placed somewhere visible in an earlier copy of the game world. when they redesigned all the maps they probably still had a few empty tiles left so shoved it in there and placed it down.
>>12114965I'm pretty sure it was the Family BASIC's fault.Speaking of, I remember one cartridge-swap trick tallowed easy access into Sonic 3's absurdly difficult level-select button-combo via Sonic 2.
This thread reminds me of the GameFAQs thread where the Trainer-Fly glitch (glitch that lets you catch Mew) was first disseminated. Crow was eaten that day.https://web.archive.org/web/20111125011704/http://gamefaqsarchive.com/index.php?pg=463Now that I think about it, Trainer-Fly really does sound like some playground tier bullshit.
>>12114373It was FireRed/LeafGreen. You can find an uncommon item, a Lava Cookie.
>>12115061>was first disseminated>The only reason I posted this code is because I've tried it, AND I saw it on 2 other sites.

>>12114682Where can I find this ROMhack?
>>12115061I remember when I first did this using my Super Game Boy and recorded on a VHS then took it to school to show my classmates who all lost their shit and begged me to clone Mews for them using the clone glitch on Silver and Gold. I told them, sure for $20 a Mew. Made quite a bit of money that month to buy up some more vidya and Yugioh cards.
>>12116024Also forgot to add, all of the were too fucking lazy and incompetent to even do the glitches to begin with. Even after being shown exactly what I did. Which is why I made so much money.
>>12114657Nude Raider lmam
>>12114924Most were pranks, I did got impressed when some kids were using a poke doll on Cubone’s mother, I thought it would never work. Most of the fun with these rumors were extending the gameplay by trying new shit. What I would give to know the mew trick as a kid…
>>12114940My cart said FF3 on it, so fuck off nigger.
>>12116024>>12116026forgot to mention that everyone stood up and clapped afterwards and the mayor gave me the key to the city

>>12113678Click the cow in town 1000 times and it will open a portal to the secret cow level
>>12116460I know you're trying to troll my post but you know that actually did fucking happen in my hometown. My mom worked for the mayor and she did give me the key to our city even though it was one they had to get rid of as the original key had our town's named misspelled. I still have it to this day. But to stay on-topic to /vr/ I did also get a free NES from that mayor as well.>>12116467My dad finally came back in 2016 and was a part of my life for a couple of years after my mom died then I got the fuck away from after I couldn't handle his racism towards Asians and realized my life was so much better without him. He was against me being into video games still, thinking my retro game collection was a joke, and hating the fact that I spoke Japanese as well as really into anime.
>>12114940It's fitting for this nostalgic thread at least. He's talking specifically about the version that was released with the title "Final Fantasy III". The reviving General Leo rumors were a thing even before any versions called VI were released in America (technically already in the 90s, as Final Fantasy Anthology changed it back to VI in 1999). So while rumors about the game were a big thing, FFIII was still the common name.
>>12113872My friends made them up for fun back then. I remember one kid telling me an elaborate way to get PokeGods and I just played along acting interested while he told me because I enjoyed the story. Something about taking all the legendary birds to an island and fusing them or something? I can't remember what it was, but he made up elaborate steps to do it. Of course after the story he "revealed" that he was making it all up. He wouldn't believe me telling him I knew he was bullshitting the whole time.
>>12116469Yeah, RPGBrandon will forever be remembered as a Doubting Thomas in this story. But you can't blame him, there were countless fake mew tricks back then. And look at the quality of the original post >>12115494, it looked like every other fake cheat.
>>12114657Nude Raider was a rumored mod for the PC version of TR1 and TR2. it was more of a meme than anything, the joke was that it kept getting delayed and it was always going to release next month. it's kind of funny it circled back to the PSX crowd.>>12116485nobody would even entertain the idea of the cow level if not for the surprisingly high effort "screenshots" lol, they were actually impressive.
>>12114018someone in my class said it's possible to get on the rooftops and find Cream the Rabbit in Station Square in SADX. I spent hours trying to light-speed dash up the different awnings
>>12113678Wasn't the Mew glitch proved true? I swear I watched a video a few years back that showed how to do it. Unless that was fake and I'm just retarded.
>>12117890you can catch mew via a glitch but it has nothing to do with the truck. you abuse the pause-fly glitch to get battle storage and set it to trigger with a pokémon with a special stat of 21
>>12117890The Mew glitch described by >>12117530 and >>12115061 is totally real, I've done it myself.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXbl-hNxnS8You might be thinking of this thoughhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQPWoJe4oSESomeone used arbitrary code execution to change the game so that Mew is actually under the truck.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2x3pIvVnP4What makes it cool is that they made it work like a virus, so you can "infect" other copies of the game through trading. Making Mew actually under the truck in whatever copies of the game you trade with until they delete their save.So I guess the rumor is somewhat true now, there really are at least a few copies of Pokemon out there where you can catch Mew under the truck (until you overwrite those saves).
>>12113678UP+B gives you a greater pokeball success rate
>>12117969while it doesn't directly, any control input *does* advance the rng, so it does affect the catch rate. just not in any way you can actually control.
>>12117974Huh, well I'm glad to have that cleared up.
>>12117935If I had a time machine, I would travel to 1998, buy a couple hundred copies of Pokemon, infect all of them with the Mew truck virus, trade them to stores that sell used games all over the world, and then travel back to 2025 and enjoy a /vr/ thread about cool game rumors that are really true.
>>12118101Imagine being the original kid that made up the Mew truck rumor, snickering to yourself as you tell your friends about it. Then you watch as it somehow actually works.
