You need to figure out what pattern you need to make the lure work. Some you need to jerk around and occasionally reel in for a split second, some you reel in for a second or two, let rest for 3-4 seconds, and reel in again, some want a steady reel in with a side-to-side jerking motion, it varies. Remember, you are trying to make the lure look like something swimming around in the water that the fish might want to eat.
Got a weird issue with the game on my DC, not sure if it's caused by the pirate rip being bad or the fact the battery in the console is dead, but I can never load any save I make. I'll get everything for that aquarium one day.

Is it worth getting a fishing controller for this?

I like Marine Fishing more than Bass Fishing, not that Bass isn't good I just prefer the Ocean. You also get to collect fish for your aquarium, very comfy game desu.
