>Looking at picking up a SNES>Game prices are retarded>Look at SFC games out of curiosity>Basically every game is cheaper, including ones that have zero language barrier or are even 100% identical across regions>Even the console itself is cheaperGuess I'm getting a Super Famicom. What are the best games for the system, Japan-exclusive or otherwise? I've never really dived into the SNES/SFC library beyond the major first party Nintendo games. I don't speak or read Japanese, but I am interested in learning, so feel free to recommend text-heavy RPGs and games with a decent language barrier.
Idk all I can advise is that tales of phantasia kind of fucking sucked a little bit
>>12118503>I don't want to emulate!>I want to play on original hardware!!!>...but I don't want to spend money, so I'd prefer to play poorly optimized versions or versions in foreign languagesLiterally the dumbest possible stance to take

>>12118503This applies to other consoles besides the SFC as wellSega Mega Drive has a lot of multi-region games where you have some combination of Japan, US and Europe on the same cart and the version is determined by your console. There's certain games where the US version is super expensive but European or Japanese variant is really cheap and the added price increase is literally just the sticker label on the cart.Nintendo rarely does multi-region carts but there's some. Super Metroid is a well known one with Japan and US on the same cart, double the price just for an US label. 1080 Snowboarding on N64 is also Japan/US multi-region.With disc-based consoles there's region locking to worry about, but with an import friendly console there's savings to be had. Silent Hill 3 has english language on the Japanese release and costs a third of what US copies are going for. Redump usually lists the languages included in each release so it's a decent place to verify disc-based games for import friendliness.
>>12118924They're the exact same games, anon. There's nothing "poorly optimized" about any of them and Super Mario World or DKC being in Japanese instead of English isn't going to alter the experience in any meaningful way
>>12118939I'm probably gonna do that too
>>12118924>I overpaid for a cartridge label and I'm PROUD OF IT!Very cool
>>12118503is there even a bad non obscure jrpg on the snes? you could pick any of them
>>12119260Depends who you believe, I guess
>>12118983So why isn't buying JP copies of retro games more popular? This seems like a no-brainer.
>>12118924>poorly optimized versionsWhat are you talking about? In what way are Japanese versions of SNES games "poorly optimized"? Is the hardware not the same?

>>12119376for US/jap model yes.
>>12118924He didn't ask for your opinion, retard. He asked for sfc games.
>>12119352Sfc is 60 hz, you fool
>>12118503All the rockman games are cheap from Japan, Rockman & Forte is a little pricier but you need to replace the battery in it. Also beware of import tariffs, they add another $25 or so to shipping, so buy a lot to make it worth it. Sailor Moon R is also good, the first one is boring.
>>12119401>never heard of europe
>>12119416Ever japanese version would be an upgrade to the pal version. What's the point?
>>12119308Because a significant amount of retro game sales are collectors and resellers, not people who just want to play the gameThere are some specific games where the value propositions between different variants get truly ridiculous, with an American or a first print label going for 10x the price of a later reprint or japanese variant with literally the exact same data on the cart or discIt's even more absurd when you realize that there's loads of people and resources out there specializing in shit like N64 box plastic seals so they can more reliably detect counterfeits, but there's basically nobody cataloguing the various different ROM chip manufacturers used in N64 carts despite that actually making a difference (in arguably some truly niche use cases)
>>12119357Mystic Quest isn't strictly bad, it's just uninteresting if you already have experience with other JRPGs.It intentionally wants to be an approachable and easygoing JRPG as an introductory to the genre for noobs, and I think it actually does that ok (the nice cartoon graphics and catchy soundtrack dressing it up helps a lot), but Pokémon came out a few years later and simply did a MUCH better job at being that, with infinitely better marketing. If you treat Mystic Quest as Babby's First Jarpig, and I mean that in an earnest manner, like it's a game you provide a very young son or nephew if they're interested in RPG games, it should do an acceptable job.Again though, Pokémon would still do a much better job.
>>12118503>SFCits snes. calling it super famicom doesnt make you special or cool
>>12121672It says Super Famicom.
The Go! Go! Ackman games were alright
>>12121672I'm not trying to be special or cool. I'm asking specifically about Japanese versions of games, given that it doesn't make sense to call them SNES games.
