Does it hold up?
Just looking at that as a layman, no it does not.
>>12120940Does any DOS game from that era?
>>12120940I replayed the original on Amstrad CPC last year. Then I did 2 and 3 on Amiga.Horrendous ports.A good version like the Apple original is perfectly playable today but requires effort unless you use a walkthrough. The remastered Trilogy is the right way to go today.
>>12120942Yes, games that were good back then like Lode Runner are still good. Bard's Tale however was always bad. Video games don't age.
>>12120984>Bard's Tale however was always badHuge sales and good reviews at the time. Why post if you know nothing. Surely there is a Zelda thread you can shit up. I won’t reply to your next seethe by the way because I know you are trolling for it.
>>12121063>Huge sales and good reviews at the time. And what does this have to do with the quality of the game? The answer is of course nothing. Plenty of crap games got good reviews back then the same they do it now. The only way to know how good a game is to play it yourself and I played it to know its shit.
>>12121069It’s a good game. Your opinion is simply wrong.Probably you have never been right about anything.
>>12120940I enjoyed my recent playthrough of the much shortened NES version.
>>12120940OP never start a serious thread with stuff like>does it hold upYou get opinionated junk like >>12120984better to ask about something specific or people’s experiences. Opinion threads here are just flaming. Most people have enjoyed bards tale over the years but it’s not friendly to beginners.
>>12121116The NES/FC versions are basically a different game entirely with the same premise/story and similar mechanics, but it's a great game>>12121141That's because if someone asks if something "held up" or "aged", then you can be sure that the answer for him, is yes. The very fact that someone asks that questions shows that the person thinks modern standards are better and the only games that wouldn't have "aged" would be something similar to modern gaming standards.
>>12120940Just play Dragon Wars, it's basically Bard's Tale IV and where they perfected the formula. Never been able to get into these, not sure why because I enjoy the other ancient blobber franchises.
>>12120940Yeah but as always never play a game on DOS if there are superior versions elsewhere, in this case nearly every fucking computer that isn't an IBM
>>12120940The first game is fine, only play the sequels if you're a masochist, as halfway through the second game all sense of balance goes flying out the window and from then on until the end of the third game you will be facing hoards of dudes with walls of health, best strategy at that point is to pretty much run away from random encounters and only do the mandatory fights. DOS and Amiga versions of Bard's Tale 3 were outsourced to a third party programmer and it's a mess. Unity engine remake is alright, though some of the art is 'looking good' levels of quality.
>>12121437For BT3 I found it wasn't so bad, because the lack of balance could go both ways. I used a spell to capture the big bad of the first world (Brilhasti Ap Tarj, the priest of the mad god)) and make him into a party member, which greatly helped in stomping things afterwards.
>>12120984Awful bait. Take a lap.
>>12120940My lil bro that shit is 40yo is twice as old as you the fuck?
>>12121069>Plenty of crap games got good reviews back then the same they do it now. You're under 30 and have an unnatural hair color, don't you?
If the encounter rate wasn't batshit insane it would have been a decent drpg.
>>12120941Maybe when you get older.
I never got farIt was neat to make a sorcerer and summon massively overpowered elemental party members. I think I've heard it mentioned it was an inspiration for Megami Tensei gameplay.
>>12120941Well I don't think anyone has ever cared what a layman thinks.
Lots of these crunchy RPG/adventure games require the player to keep notes and make maps, but that's a level of investment that some don't care for. So, yes but not if you're a passive player which describes most
>>12121437> as halfway through the second game all sense of balance goes flying out the windowThat's funny, in the FC version of 2 that's also the case but in a different way: it becomes too easy but half the classes become almost useless too.
>>12123459I'll make a pass if you can handle it
>>12120940Speaking of the Bards Tale anyone here ever play Dragon Wars? It was originally developed as Bards Tale 4 before some shenanigans at interplay created a chang of plans. Been thinking of giving it a shot thos weekend
>>12125378It's great. The IIgs version is kino. Use GSplus for your emulator, install System 6.04 and let her rip.
>>12125378I played the NES/FC version which is mostly faithful to the original game (balancing is different and there are a couple of new additions) and it's easily one of the most underrated RPGs on the systempost your face when you killed the guy on the hunting ground
