"poverty fighters" are fighting games so niche, underplayed, and unsupported, that far from having dedicated setups alongside others in tournament spaces, they'd have to make do with even more grassroots tournaments which they "host" in peoples' hotel rooms or bathrooms at events, because there was nowhere else at the venue to do so and they wanted to play

since they were emulatable sometimes, they could be played off a laptop like that, making it not terribly inconvenient to do so

evo used to be super faggy and only normie capcom fighting games and tekken got support from evo staff.
anything anime was pushed to the side. melty blood in the bathroom 1 year.
ggxxac had the tv turned off during finals.
doa had gravue girls advertising it one year on stream and the guy in charge had a freak out saying it was against evo values.

Playing Melty Blood with a friend was my introduction to Type Moon, only just started recently playing the game (coincidentally when it takes place, have knack for this apparently and the same thing happened the first time I played AIR) but before that, the game made me really like Kohaku and be super attracted to Arc.
Though yeah Shiki just looked like a generic protag-kun to me (Actually on that, a little disappointed EFZ is all girls because I'd fucking love to play as Yukito) and I could probably only remember five characters off the top of my head.
