If the video game crash didn't happen this would be as popular as Dig Dug, and it's a better game and it's also better than Pac-Man. Probably the second best game of the Golden Age after Joust.
>>
>>12122223
The video game crash didn't affect arcades, OP.
But yes, Mappy is great.
>>
A few years ago, we had a challenge thread for Mappy and I had the highest score. : )
But they said it didn't count cuz I was playing the NES version. : (
I fucking love Mappy
>>
Mappy is mediocre. It feels like they wanted to make yet another variation Pac-Man, but the results are disappointing (not to mention all the actual Pac-Man sequels by Namco Japan are mediocre too). I never got into it. Not having a jump button after the world had seen Donkey Kong just doesn't feel right.
>>
>>12122260
Not every game needs to be the same
Fuck standardization, fuck homogenization, fuck genres
>>
>>12122223
I love both Dig Dug and Mappy, but I do wish the latter game is more popular too.
I just wish that some of Namco’s other retro franchises got as much love as Pac-Man. I love Pac-Man, but is it too much to ask for a new Mappy, Dig Dug, or Galaga game?
>>
>>12122236
It doesn't count. You didn't get the high score.
>>
>>12122236
Yet none of them beat your score did they?

Based Mappy lover
>>12122260
Mappy is much better than Pac-Man
>>
>>12122360
If this thread is still alive I will try tomorrow anon :^)
>>
>>12122314
Pretty cool and obscure game. I wish it had more levels.
>>
It's a good and fun, but the controls don't feel as satisfying to use as its contemporaries.
>>
>>12123443
It's contemporaries are shit like Mario Bros., this is 1983. Mario Bros is also fun as fuck but it has a really stiff fixed-arc jump that feels kind of bad to use. Mappy has no jump but in this case simple is better.

My personal favorite arcade game. I discovered it through one of those cheap TV plug-and-play devices that everyone had in ~2005.
>>12122360
Very nice anon. I haven't played in years but you've inspired me to download and boot it up today.
>>12122678
Good luck!
>>
>>12123785
That's the 1st time I played it. it also had dig dug, galaga, Ms pac man and pole position where you could rotate the stick left and right to steer the car. Really cool. I had played those other games before but never mappy

> THE video game crash ©®™

shit that only happened in Burgerland. Meanwhile the rest of planet earth did not care and nothing ever happened.

Yank zoomers think it was way bigger than it actually was while shit just went on in the rest of the world as if nothing ever happened. Atari simply sucked.
>>
>>12122231
The video game crash absolutely wrecked arcades and changed the face of the business to where the only American developers left standing were Atari and Midway.
>>
>>12123814
It didn't even matter here.
>>
>>12122472
Nigga, what fucking youtube videos are there about Mappy? Because I've never seen a single one. My opinions are simply my own conclusions from playing games. Stop projecting cunt.
>>
Fun fact, Mappy was Aaron Giles first MAME driver: https://aarongiles.com/old/mamemem/part1.html
>>
>>12122260
>Not having a jump button
Why do you need a jump button when it's a tunnel-based game? This is like saying Dig-Dug needs a jump button lol.
>>
>>12123941
Didn't say there was a youtube video about Mappy, all those fags don't care about anything that isn't Nintendo or modern consoles.

"Jump must be a button" is an incredibly retarded take that is parroted by those kind of people and the morons that watch them. I'm sorry to hear you came up with it on your own, I don't mean to mock your developmental disability.

Game Romans...
>>
>>12122223
He jus a mouse tho. Him cant even jump
>>
>>12122301
lol
No, they didn't. Not even close. The OP conceded that I would probably win if it was on MAME and I conceded that I only got that high because I could pause the game and rest my cramping hands something I wouldn't be able to do on MAME without using ::ptoo!:: sAvEsTaTeS so the OP would probably win if we were playing head to head.
>>12122289
Yeah, probably not but I just like playing. Couldn't give a toss about the score, it's just that the game rewards you with one for continuing to play.
>>
>>12122223
Dude looks like you could beat off a real pent up load from him
>>
The modern Mappy port to the 2600 is an impressive feat
>>
>>12122223
sex with mappy
>>
>>12123785
>Good luck!
Ok I didn't get a chance to play today(tomorrow I have way more free time)but I did find my PB score from earlier this year. Round 10 78,050k which makes me really impressed with this anons score >>12122360.
>>
>>12124908
There's a hundred other mouse characters, why mappy and not mickey or gadget etc
>>
>>12122223
Mappy was popular was fugg, mofugga.
Really I played that in many an arcade and pizza parlor.
>>
>>12124616
Wow, that looks old. It must be a ruin that the Game Roaming Game Romans used.
>>
>>12122223
>better than dig dug
its really not
>also better than pac man
laughably bad take
>second best game of golden age after joust
donkey kong is easily the best golden age game
>>
flicky>>>>>mappy.
>>
>>12122360
This anon again, tried a few times to crack 100k but man I'm super inconsistent at Mappy. The game's completely deterministic though (I'm pretty sure) so I just gotta memorize the patterns better, especially remembering what items Goro goes behind. Later levels especially, chaining becomes far riskier and I usually end up not doing it for the most part so getting the 1000 points from Goro is very valuable.
>>
>>12125927
>laughably bad take
In Pac-Man you literally spend hours doing the same patterns over and over
Mappy at least has some more variance to it
>>
>>12125704
Mickey is a windbag mascot loser, literally the face of a super-corpo and has no real personality past his 20th century stuff.
Gadget is a sexy woman and deserves a different kind of lust.
>>
>>12122223
Athena and Son-Son tried to expand it's idea but ended in failure
>>
>>12127087
Does Son-Son have item chaining? It doesn't really look similar to me.
>>
bumping so when i beat my score i can post it
>>
>>12126161
Keep it up anon, I believe in you. I'm nowhere near your score yet, but I've been having a lot of fun learning the game. I didn't even know you could chain items at first.
