Generic ass setting, off the top of my head already in Cybernator, Wolf Fang and Contra 3

Outrun did those like a decade before it's not special anymore. Hard corps probaboy got reminded of them by Wolf fang (if not D&D) which follows a similar briefing intro for each mission. Metal Slug 3's branching paths aren't chatty like in those games, they are just background interactions like in Golden Axe RoTA

Sums up what I was about to say. Contra is generic, but plays well. Metal Slug oozes charm and personality, but doesn't play as well.
Tbqh, one of my main problem's with Metal Slug's gameplay is that your default pistol can't be aimed diagonally. Having to mash the fire button hurts my hand and wrist too. Thank fuck for autofire features, like in Anthology.
