Let's talk about Third Person Action Adventure games....Just started Shadowman and I'm hooked.
>>12123884Have you ever heard of a little game called Ocarina of Time? It's such an underrated gem.
>>12123884Heretic II is pretty neat
>>12124232>>12124232I was the only one in the world who knew of or played this game before Civvie did his dogshit video on it.
>>12123884Underrated game. Not spoken enough about honestly. The level design, gameplay design, atmosphere, soundtrack, and overall tone is just...*chefs kiss*
>>12123884Is that screencap from the remaster? That looks surprisingly good.
>>12124483no me
>>12124610I hope you're talking like a redditor ironically
>>12123884I actually started Blade of Darkness today but there was some bug so the screenshots I took were fucked. Picture from google. The game's a fair bit jank which is no surprise for a game from 2001. The controls are quite rough, strafing is only available when locked onto an enemy and the camera keeps jittering as you do things. Executing combos with the weapons is also something I haven't yet figured out. The basic direction+attack works most of the time but some moves often miss despite it looking like the animation hit. No clue how to pull off the special moves.Combat can get quite brutal on both sides. I found I had to save often because there were certain enemies that proved a challenge and fighting multiple enemies was also quite hit or miss. The dismemberment system makes up for it. It adds all of these cool situations where you cut off the enemy's arms or sometimes lop off their head. The levels are simple but not entirely linear and there's some light secrets hidden about. I went through the first two on the barbarian and both had a fair bit of complexity. They're not short either. Took me an hour per level with some deaths.Overall I got quite into it and I shall play more. It's a shame that this type of game is quite dead. This would be so much better if the controls had been a bit more modern.
>>12124942I hope you posted a pic of a really shitty game ironically.
>>12123884Kino game
>>12124085What causes this? Honestly wondering, because I'm an idort my entire life and I loved the Zelda games but never felt the need to go into another thread unprompted and display my butthurt so openly.
>>12124610please *chefs kiss* go back
>>12123884this is on the backlog>>12124232beat it. great game>>12125076atmosphere and level design are amazing. don't forget to play each characters unique opening level after you beat the game with whoever you chose. for me, sargon all the way.all the obvious classics are good, Alice, Enclave, Rune etc I recently beat Oni Anniversary Edition, good game.melee combat is fun, reminds of blade of darkness in some ways. finding weapons and ammo is rare but thats the point, makes the levels have a lot of tension as there are only checkpoints. still an easy ish game. lots of fun cheats too like big head mode. feels very much 'of it's time' with the influences, if you grew up in the 90's you'll love it.
>>12123884is the sequel any good? I have it on pcsx2 with a 50fps patch. heard it isn't as good but hoping its worth a 1 time play through
>>12125465Drive by shitposting isn't all that new, but the volume has been increasing over the years. Open just about any thread and you can find the first post is more often than not something antagonistic.I used to assume it was just retards looking for a dopamine hit trolling, but with the frequency it happens I think it's a group of bad actors just seeking to stifle discussion, especially when coupled with low effort engagement threads where the OP doesn't even seem to post anything beyond the original post.
>>12124942Does this game finally have a fan translation?
>>12124610>>12123884Shadow Man has always been fucking amazing. It's a horror Zelda. >12125076I played this, died and it sent me back to the beginning. Can you only save after finishing a level?>>12125940I played 30 minutes of it and it's nothing like the original. It might be a decent game overall but it seemed pretty janky to me.
>>12123884Probably the last genuinely good game Acclaim made before finally kicking the bucket. Also, fittingly Halloween.
>>12125465Probably because there was an 8 year span of time on here, where there was one Zelda autist who had multiple generals up every fucking day about Zelda. >>12126051>especially when coupled with low effort engagement threads where the OP doesn't even seem to post anything beyond the original post. The OP's post is inviting discussion, it's up for others to join in or not, what kind of effort are you implying? Sucking your dick? I fucking hate retarded faggots that make simple OP post, then relentlessly bump their shitty posts with nonsense, keeping it in the catalogue until it eventually dies.At least this thread seems like it has more than just one desperate OP shilling some fucking game.
>>12125076I played this for about an hour, then got frustrated, and sidetracked with other games, and don't really feel like going back to it. The premise of the game and its systems is awesome, but like you said, the controls are rancid dogshit, and it's not even anything to do with being from 2001. They're just bad.
Why are there relatively so few of these types of games?I guess it's easier to develop a first person game?
I'm like 15 chalices into Medievil. It's a fun game, controls/camera can be hell (especially during the Lake level) but it's still solid overall. Love the different weapons and enemy varietyDoes the remake at least fix the controls?
How are Soul Reaver I and II?
>>12126051>Open just about any thread and you can find the first post is more often than not something antagonistic.SEEFUCKING SEEIT'S NOT JUST ME, I'M NOT INSANESOMEONE ELSE HAS NOTICED
>>121254654chan has been fully integrated into the normalnigger social media sphere and generally attracts the kind of trash that either mindlessly mash F5 for cheap (you)s or bring their outside resentment at (group/brand) in here.
>>12126295I'm not sure if the recent re-release improved on the controls but I find that they don't bother me as much as they did when I tried playing it years ago. The new version adds some camera options and I went with (2) which is sort of freelook and feels a bit less janky than the other two. Maybe my tolerance of jank controls is higher so I can still enjoy this. I remember a lot of old third person games being sort of janky. I'm struggling to think of one that wasn't.
>>12126434All it takes is scraping threads on an archive to see it, it doesn't match discussion from years ago and is far too regular to be a coincidence. I don't think it's genuine, I think it's literally a tactic to stifle discussion and drive away users. When you realize it's most likely a bot trying to derail the thread and demoralize people, it's easy to ignore it and talk to actual users in the thread.
>>12126639Or, people discovered that being antagonistic gets replies more than genuine discussion does, because a lot of users on this godforsaken website respond more to insults than dialogue.>>12126532>I'm struggling to think of one that wasn't.Plenty. Max Payne, Soul Reaver, Rune, Advent Rising, Tomb Raider, Kill Switch, Ninja Gaiden Black, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, they all controlled good/great.
>>12123884Me and this game, we go way back. I remember using cheats in the demo to explore the parts of the level you can't get to because you needed upgrades from later in the (full) game. Then years later I bought the Steam version and it was borked, wouldn't run from the client. More years passed until I thought to just run the .exe from the installation files lol. Then came the remaster, and it actually did things right and made the game way better. Seriously, how often does a re-release manage to improve controls, restore cut content, add entirely new stuff without disrupting what was already there, and even find previously-unseen concept art for the in-game "museum" secret?Actually, I think it's possible to mod Shadow Man now. Seems like one of the remaster devs released the Blender addons he used to work on it: https://behemothprogrammer.github.io/Shadowman/index.htmlCome think of it, there used to be quite a few games like this back then, where did they go? I remember playing:>Asghan: The Dragon Slayer>Dark Vengeance>Infernal>Outcast>Shade: Wrath of Angels (no one ever knows about this one)>Space Bunnies Must Die!
Better known as "OoT killer".
>>12127212I think one of the original devs, when the game first came out, specifically said "There's a lot more we wanted to do. Look forward to a Definitive Edition 20 years later," or something along those lines.Lo and behold, almost 20 years after it released, it gets a definitive remaster.
>>12123884>>12127212Soundtrack also goes unreasonably fucking hard:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eau2LHhk76Ihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuv0rgvM_fMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgsKAUHQ2bkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcWCiyAi9PQ
>>12127546What's hilarious to me is that the composer, Tim Haywood, made some of the creepiest music I've ever heard for the most macabre video game I've ever played - then went on to do music for Bloons Tower Defense.
>>12126639i don't even think it requires a bot, there are enough anti-social weirdos especially on this website who have no idea how to interact with other people in a non-hostile way
>>12127551>made some of the creepiest music I've ever heard for the most macabre video game I've ever playedDefinitely up there. Only other ones I can think of are Manhunt, The Suffering, and...Condemned, maybe?
>>12127553>>12126639>>12126434>>12126051>>12125465>tendy autism compels them to seethe about a shitpost well after everyone else ignored itEvery time.
>>12127564Defensive
>>12127212This is a formative game for me. I played it way too young and it fucking traumatized me for a week or two. But man, it really is an awesome title. The developers specifically said their inspirations were OoT and Tomb Raider and fucking hell they pulled it off very well. There's nothing else like it out there.
>>12128589I had a similar experience with Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare, although that was intensely horror themed, not just aesthetically.
Anyone mention Die by the Sword and Outcast yet?
>>12128645Yes to both of those, I think.
>>12127760speak for yourself
>>12128641Shadow Man is definitely fucking scary and it's pretty much horror all throughout except for the very beginning swamp area, which eventually also gets spookier. I need to play both the original and the PS1 Alone in the Dark games.
shit needs a fucking remake that doesn't run at rock solid silky smooth 12.5fps
>>12123884COME ON SLOW POKE.
>>12130635It's definitely creepy, and unnerving, and for a kid would be horrifying, but its tone is more cartoonish than Alone In The Dark, thanks to Shadowman's more surrealist art direction. The New Nightmare was going for gritty realism, which I think would have a deeper effect.
