What went wrong?
I think it was due to financial problems with their pin-ball machines despite being good quality, they also apparently had a lawsuit with capcom as Capcom argued that Data East's arcade game Fighter's History unlawfully copied from their own fighting game Street Fighter II. There was apparently another lawsuit with the company that made money puzzle exchange/ money puzzle exchanger as the game was extremely similar to magical drop which was made by data east.

Data East was the best bad developer. I can't think of anyone else who made such endearing junk as Trio the Punch and Tattoo Assassins.
