Why was it such a commercial failure? I like it better than Half Life. Would it have been more successful in Japan?

It was curious back in the days, and anime culture was largely ignored.
A shame there weren't more mecha parts, those are very pleasing, gameplay-wise.

Half-Life. Non-Anime Culture.

"You play a game remotely associated with Anime. Japan. Who we bombed in World War 2. Hmm."

Grounds for Immediate and Appropriate Prejudice, Judgment and Dismissal.

The european cover art sucks so bad.
As for why it sold poorly, it never got subsequent re-releases. Back in the late 90's and early 2000's the vast majority of PC game sales were bargain bin finds or budget re-releases, rather than being expected to make the vast majority of their sales in the first two months many games often saw steady sales for years. Some of the most beloved and best-selling PC games of all time have more than a dozen variants out there for many different prices and several different publishers in varying box shapes.
Meanwhile Shogo had its original print run and then fucking nothing until for some inexplicable reason it received Linux and PPC Amiga ports several years later. Even just a basic Xplosiv re-release would've outsold both of those ports by a wide margin.

It was janky as fuck compared to other shooters at the time. Really floaty. The early incarnation of Monolith's engine just wasn't that good. This and Blood 2 were pretty bad in that regard.

It wasn't until NOLF that they got their shit together.

That mecha design is so fucking good but I don't remember if they looked anything like that in game.

It's that simple.

Lucky for me, I was already into anime long before the unwashed masses so I got it and enjoyed the heck out of it.

You know that silence indie games sometimes have when they break or bug out and then you just walk around hearing only some sound effects? Most of the game is like that but it is working properly. Beyond that it has enemies that 180 no scope you with rng damage that can kill you instantly.

It's a shame I love it, when it came out it felt really immersive. It's buggy, lots of BS deaths, not enough mecha time. It's a shame it is close to being great. I still enjoy it, lot of voice acting too that kinda stood out to me when I was young.
