When I think retro games for people that enjoy literature and french art movies and don't think video games are real art, I think Cosmology of Kyoto, maybe Echo Night, Garage, LSD, Pathologic, Silent Hill 2, and Yume Nikki. JRPGs get pretty artsy sometimes. Funny enough the "walking sim" and the "art game" as concepts really took off in the 2010s but most of that stuff is actually pretty kitschy and stupid. Pretentious but not in an interesting way.
