What made Halo special?

Darn good gameplay

Retardation. Same as Marathon for Mac fags.

artstyle and seamless integration of vehicles

Big ass maps for the most part.
>>
It was a really well made fps for console, that felt like an fps made for console. The controls were slow and floaty, and it worked perfectly for a controller. It didn't feel janky, or imprecise, it felt natural. Also, really good multiplayer. That was the main thing.
>>
>>12129510
this >>12129535 and the fact when you looked up in the sky, you saw the fucking HALO loop around. no other game had a skybox like that. mindblowing

The visuals

Is halo actually good or is this a nu-vr meme
>>
>>12129565
It isn't. It has that aggressively generic look to it that you'd think of when picturing a fake game characters pretend to play on a TV show.

>Great console FPS controls
>Large, open levels
>Co-op
>LAN multiplayer
>Vehicles that you can enter, sometimes with multiple people
>Intelligent AI for its time
>No ducking and shooting but flanking
>Rechargeable energy shield
>Military Sci-Fi story and world that felt kinda like the Empire from Star Wars or something
>That Halo loop
>You play a 7ft genetically-modified super soldier with cybernetic augmentations for strength and speed
>Weapons that look cool and feel great
>Epic music
I think there was nothing like it at that point. I don't know why people call it overrated, maybe it was the hype that made people dislike it.
>>
>>12129565
Yes Halo: Combat Evolved *is* that good, but you can't fully enjoy it without at least one other person for Co-Op and three other people for versus.

It also requires you be explicit about what you look for in a game, because obviously Halo isn't like other games. You couldn't build maps or play tag like in Timesplitters; you couldn't be hyper-mobile like in Unreal Championship.
>>
>>12129510
It let poors without a PC experience playing an FPS
>>
>>12129510
It pushed the genre forward with the best AI (still unsurpassed), great weapon design, great enemy variety, awesome levels and massive areas with the best vehicle integration all tied together with an interesting story that got players really invested.

Contrarianism is a powerful drug. I do the same to many games and movies I objectively enjoy. But Halo was my first game so I would never desecrate it like that.

Halo and its consequences have been a disaster for first-person shooters.
>>

>>
>>12130128
My first FPS was Quake 2, followed by Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, UT99, then followed by Quake 4, FEAR, and lastly Halo. I was finishing my secondary school, and Halo was the last game i played at that time. Then when i got my own PC, i played Morrowind and Halo. I miss those days - i have only good memories of playing Halo. I miss my old clan.

This reminds me that i need to pay through MCC thats idling in the backlog.

And yeah, big maps, easy to drive vehicles, and a damn good mil sci-fi story made it feel good, and shotgun made it feel GREAT.
>>
>>12129565
It was rated 10/10 at launch, and it's still fun today. Get the Master Chief Collection the next time it's on sale for $9.99 + tax. The whole franchise is a particularly competent synthesis of 1980s scifi made video game.

Halo, an overrated game, similar to Half Life 2, forced down people's throats through a massive and millionaire marketing and advertising campaign.
All Halo sequels were the same: millions upon millions in marketing. In terms of gameplay and fun: a shallow movie experience with no replayability and a multiplayer experience that quickly becomes boring, similar to a theme park.

https://web.archive.org/web/20101017062000/http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/halo.html
https://gamemarketingcampaigns.com/campaign/halo-2

Counter Strike, meanwhile, was the opposite of all that and organically became a worldwide phenomenon.
>>
>>12129510
Speaking purely from a single player experience
>weird continuation of Marathon/Bungie lore
>unresolved mystery regarding Forerunner/humanity connection
>wow cool power armor cyborg
>unresolved mystery regarding Covenant inner workings, society etc
>cool super structures
>clash between advanced alien races and humanity just scraping the stars
>interesting technology and weapons
>unresolved mystery as to conclusion of the series, open plot lines regarding books and side games
>>
>>12129510
Best contemporary FPS gameplay, fun story that was easy to understand and full of references to good media, the game felt epic with so many massive levels and vehicles - but most importantly, unrestricted local coop where you and a buddy could blast through the entire campaign on the same tv.

Halo 2 induced PTSD

>Max Hoberman
People are always shocked when they think about the impact multiplayer had on the quality of what we put out, and when I tell them all the hurdles that I faced. They think multiplayer must been what the majority of the studio was working on. Right? Uh, far from it.

>Marty O’Donnell
The famous Halo 2 crunch was so bad. We had to renege on so many promises. And this is such a typical Bungie story, as it happens over and over again. We just couldn’t deliver.

>Marcus Lehto
I think Halo 2 has the darkest memories for me, personally. We struggled the most as a studio at that time, just to figure out what we wanted to make, how we were going to come off of that success of Halo and to ante it up. But we just didn’t have the right leadership at that time.

>Marcus Lehto
We were obsessed with detail and with quality overall, so whatever we were going to ship, we knew it was going to be something that played well. But we all knew what it could’ve been, had we actually had our shit together.

>Joe Staten
We were driven by the strong desire to outdo ourselves, but we didn’t fully understand our limitations. And it was a hard process to admit to ourselves that we couldn’t do everything.

>Paul Bertone
It was basically a death march to the end. Nobody will say anything different, and if they do they’re just trying to sugarcoat it. Just a death march.

>Jaime Griesemer
Some of Halo 2 was great—the Xbox Live component was something nobody had ever done, the multiplayer was excellent. And a lot of really cool tech and story stuff happened. But we had to kill ourselves to get it done.

>Paul Bertone
I honestly thought that nobody was going to buy it, because the stuff we had to do at the end of the project felt so gut wrenching. But luckily, nobody saw how it was before, so for them it’s like all the stuff we took out just doesn’t exist.
>>
>>12130128
this
Coming from a PC background, Halo was just another FPS. From today's perspective, Halo apparently was the bing bing wahoo of the console fps experience.
Real men played Deus Ex,SoF, Wolfenstein .
>>
>>12130128
still causing tears a quarter of a century later. love it.
>>
>>12130673
What a moronic comparison. Halo and Half Life are renowned for their campaign. Counter Strike is purely multiplayer only.

You have brain worms and are a fucking retard.
>>
Never played it. Probably cause fpses are fun and it’s the first one outside of the n64 that didn’t require a mouse and or keyboard to feel like you’re in control of your character correctly
>>
>>12130839

The soundtrack (audio in general) and the atmosphere. Good use of cool (blue, purple, green) colors.

the internal data for volumetric lighting in halo ce and h2 is labeled 'mgs2'! presumably they saw metal gear solid 2's e3 2000 demo and decided to replicate the effect -- halo 2's dev tools make the reference very explicitly
>>
>>12130891
>Good use of cool (blue, purple, green) colors.
Excellent point. This made the environments, weapons, enemies feel truly alien and futuristic. The gorgeous colors of the covenant made a perfect contrast with the humans.

The blood was also a huge deal. Blue, purple, green, orange. Just incredible.

>>12130927
It's sort of iridescent isn't it? I remember it glowing in such a way when light hits it and it being visible in dark spaces, making it feel a little extra gross and other world.
>>
>>12130937
Grunt and Hunter blood definitely glows like crazy. Elite/jackal/flood blood does not to my knowledge.

I also remember Hunter blood can injure and kill you if you're shooting at a corpse and it flies directly at you.

I think people wouldn't call it overrated if it stayed a Mac/PC release like originally intended before the MS takeover. Some modest marketing (no normie hype) and gaming magazines calling it great, people would add it to the list of best PC games of the 2000s like Deus Ex or Half-Life 2.

Although I was skeptical of Halo myself when I got an Xbox that came with it and Midtown Madness 3 back in 2003. I was playing the latter game and only started playing Halo out of curiosity and I got hooked. I initially thought it was just a generic FPS game, I didn't believe the marketing hype.

Atmosphere, music, and a simple, safe, but straight-to-the-point story.
Leading up to launch it morphed into a more serious and edgy product, with a viral grasp into the public zeitgeist at a time when in was cool to be edgy and badass

but it couldn't even mog quake 1

Halo is a classic example of a mass-market product that won over the public. The guy who really thinks Halo is one of the pinnacles of FPS/video games is the same type who shamelessly claims that Back to the Future is his favorite movie, or that Rick and Morty is the best comedy ever made, that sort of thing.
>>
>>12130794
Have you noticed the difference in how Elites deal with their shields going down? Lower ranked blue Elites will rush the player for a melee hit, while red higher ranked ones will retreat to cover and wait for their shields to recharge.
One of my favorite details, great AI.
