What does /vr/ think of cave story? I don't think I've seen any threads about it here before.
>>
>>12129804
Never played the game but boy do I enjoy Mimigas...
>>
I have seen threads. People here generally seem to like it I think?

Personally I didn't fall in love with it like some do but I thought it was cool and fun enough to play through once. And there was clearly more to the game than I was caring to explore (hidden things and story details and such) so it doesn't seem strange that some people do end up loving it.
>>
>>12129804
The tragedy of Cave Story is that it came out a decade too soon, when the PC indie market was practically dead. If it had been released alongside Fez, Braid, and The Binding of Isaac, it would have been a huge hit.
>>
>>12129804
Great casual core game
One of the worse central /v/ fanbases on this site and beyond
>>
>>12129804
Furry garbage
Just play the Hack9/GHost9 series
>>
it's fun, simple as.
>>
>>12129952
>One of the worse central /v/ fanbases on this site
the complete opposite, actually
>>
Is the 3ds version an acceptable way to play it?
>>
>>12129804
Massively overrated because being an indie freeware that doesn't look like either a flash game or stick figures was a novelty at the time. Still good, controls well, level design is a bit boring, cool weapons, good story, memorable characters.

>>12129946
For sure, but I think it was enough of a hit. On the other hand, had it been released much later it would drown in a sea of indie platformers, without much to make it stand out.

Honorary retro. Deserves to be among the greats, like Castlevania and Metroid.

I dropped it once I realized its misery porn and saving certain characters is locked behind cryptic bullshit you would never do without a guide

Sega genesis for the true /vr/ experience.
>>
Off topic. It’s not even that old. But I liked it. Didn’t finish it but I liked it.
>>
>>12129804
this game almost singlehandedly spawned pixelshit indie steam games. it's crazy to think that soulless really is a defineable art style.
>>
>>12131797
>It’s not even that old.
It's a PC game from 2004
>>
>>12131832
That’s not even that long ago.
>>
>>12129804
I loved it. Game just felt amazing to play. Movement/controls, weapon designs and upgrade system, moment to moment combat, bossfights, OST, artstyle, writing; all just absolutely top notch.

I feel like pigeonholing it as only being good because it was one of the first indies or made by one man is selling it short, it's just a really fucking fun and well-designed game regardless, even if it released today and 100 people worked on it.
>>
I wasn't crazy about it like everyone else, but I liked it. The boss fights were surprisingly good.
>>
>>12129804
It's one of those games that's so good it makes it look effortless, almost like you could make your own game or why did I never think of that.
>>
>>12129804
Movement is great. Very fun to speedrun. I did bloodstained sanctuary speedruns back in the day and had a lot of fun increasing my times.

This game deserves more attention. Not just from people in general but I mean from Nicalis especially. Cave Story + on steam has had broken achievements, doesnt have the new content switch version has.

Daisuke Amaya/Pixel has made some other fun games as well. His games have a specific style and vibe that are really his own.

Good porn.
>>
>>12132076
Cave Story's porn inspired me to become a porn artist. Damn you Noill.
>>
Loved it. Also the game I always forget when trying to name the hardest games ever made. I'll never be able to get the true ending of this. It's just too hard.
>>
>>12129804
Great game that is mislabeled as "metroidvania" for some reason.
>>
>>12132162
it was circlejerked by indies at the same time metroidvanias were getting really popular. the mid-2000s are when all the most tiresome indie cliches took form

>>
>>12129804
For a game that's supposed to be replayable with so many branching paths, it's awfully talky. Bullshit cryptic secrets that make Druaga blush (making the hardest jump in the game as a requirement to take a different path through the game? HUH?)
>>
>>12132289
>making the hardest jump in the game as a requirement
Please refresh my memory anon, I can't remember which one was that.
>>
>>12132162
yeah, its clearly a willyvania
>>
This game gets a pass for being made by one guy. When an indie has more budget and more artists that's when it's not acceptable.

I'd still give some indies a pass if they only have ONE artist even if they have other people in other departments, usually an artist has their hands full enough.

I should know, I'm working in a game with a team right now.
>>
>>12129952
I doubt majority played it.
They just like to masturbate to Mimigas.
>>
>>12129804
I need to go back to it, it’s a fun game to play. I only played the DS version. I got a bit disappointed because it was recommended to me as a metroidvania.
>>
Honestly one of my favorite games. I like how varied different playthroughs can feel because of how much of an impact the different weapon choices you make have on how you play it. The biggest issue is definitely that the alternative choices can be a bit TOO cryptic, but if you look up a guide after your first blind playthrough and learn the options you have it becomes a wonderful experience. Tons of fun to use weapons with variety and the weapon leveling system is unique and gives a cool punishment for getting hit while also playing around with that mechanic itself through the Nemesis getting weaker with levels.

I haven't done a playthrough in years, I used to play this shit on my PSP with the fan port all the time back in the day. I should pick it up again for old times sake. The co-op mode on Switch was extremely fun too.

>>12132330
Think he's talking about the way you get the Booster 2.0, where there's a big gap you have to perfectly jump across that makes the character who gives it to you (Booster) live instead of die for some reason.
>>
>>12132289
I found the story to be fairly restrained, it knew when to focus on action and during slower moments you get some exposition. I usually don't really care about story in action games, but it was charming and well-written, with great characters. Aeon Genesis translation was far better than Nicalis though

Also the game has a mark where you should jump at, you're probably jumping way too late. Took me two tries using the reference mark.
>>
>>12132162
makes some sense, it does have clear metroid inspiration, but yeah it's pretty linear and the only rpg elements are the stars mechanic with your guns.
>>
>>12129804
It's good. That's about all you can say about it. For being that early in the indie scene, it still manages to hold up really well.

That said, for me, the Goat early indie game is Iji
>>
>>12129804
Cave Story and Kero Blaster are both top tier games.

Has Pixel made anything else?

I still prefer this one. The original doujinvania.
>>
Does anyone know why Hack9/Hacker9 and Cave Story appear to be running on the exact same engine? Even down to the same ceiling bonk effect. Was this game made on some sort of japanese template that I don't know of, or maybe shared assets? Or maybe somehow Pixel's engine was shared? I feel like a really stupid baka gaijin right now.
>>
>>12132162
>>12132165
The correct terminology is Willyvania
>>
>>12129804
I will always associate this game with the smell of wood because I was spraying wood scented air freshener around my house when I played it for the first time. Smells sure are magical.
>>
>Old enough to have seen Cave Story be on /v/ as a new game just fan translated, and now being posted on /vr/
kill me
>>
>>12134017
From what I can remember Hack9 is basically a full blown mod of cave story.
>>
>>12134017
They're not, not even close at all. Most of the Hack9 games are on 3d engines even...

The time between Metroid/Castlevania's release in 1986 and Cave Story's was 18 years.
It's been almost 21 years since release.

Today I was fantasizing about Frutiger Aero and playing indie games on Windows 7 in 2015. I was 10.
The years really have slipped by due to the world and drama.
>>
>>12129804
I'm still salty about hard bosses/areas with unskippable cutscenes/text boxes, such a pants on head retarded decision. Every single time you go through Hell you have to click through the text boxes tediously dumping the boss's backstory. I will probably never replay it, if only for this reason.
>>
>>12132076
>Cave Story + on steam has had broken achievements
It was only 1 achievement and they fixed it years ago.
>>
>>12130223
It depends on which one you’re talking about.
The 3d version is really bad but the eShop 3d classics version is pretty good
>>
>>12134790
apparently the holiday cheat code is bugged too, although you can fix that by fiddling with a file. didn't even know that was a thing until just yesterday.
