Just finished up another 101% run of Donkey Kong Country.
These really are the best 16bit platformers bar none. The aesthetics are unmatched and each game has a wildly unique but consistent tone, absolutely fantastic music (even 3), and the momentum-platforming is so tight that I find it hard to click with other games.
The “gimmick stage bad” complaint is very overblown, and I feel like the gimmicky stages are a fun distraction from the traditional levels (of which there are plenty).
DKC1 might not have much in the way of secrets beyond “jump in this pit” or “carry this barrel while weaving through enemies,” but it’s still a fun time and they drastically improved the bonus content in 2/3.
I’d say 3 overall is my favorite. I really liked the overworld and the PNW theme.
My only true complaint is that each game has a very clear definitive “best” character, Diddy in 1 and Dixie in 2/3, to the point where it’s not really worth trying to play as the other because there’s such a stark difference in speed/jump height/Dixie’s hair propeller. Sonic handled different character abilities much better, with all 3 characters offering new ways to get through the levels, whereas DKC is pretty much “use the best Kong or you’re gimping yourself.”
What’s your favorite DKC?
Did you enjoy the DK Land games? Or the GBA ports?
>>
Diddy is actually a better character for advanced players, he moves faster, the cartwheel is tighter and with roll jumps has almost as much air time as dixie just with considerably more agility

That’s good to know
I’ve always defaulted to Dixie since first playing this and it feels wrong to not have her propeller glide
>>
i swear there has been a daily "I 100%ed dkc" thread lately
>>
>>12130101
Better than the daily “castlevania is jank” spam

DK has the ground slap. DKL is good, better than DKC. The baby character in DKC3 can skip on water. Dixie's helicopter is good but it's a bit slow. I'd rather use Diddy's cartwheel off the cliff method to get the distance.

>DKL is good, better than DKC

3 was always my favorite growing up, it really confused me to learn nobody online liked it. I can absolutely understand preferring one of the other two, these days I think the first one is the best, but to think it's a flat out bad game has always baffled me. From what everyone tends to say, it seems like its genuinely as shallow as "I don't like Kiddy Kong" and like idk whatever man. So many people dismiss amazing games because of the character you play as and it's always been a red flag for me to immediately disregard your opinion.

I like stupid ass baby kong anyway, he's funny and based. If you don't like him you're a bigger baby than he is.

The first one is absolutely the best.
I associate DKC3 with the disappointment of Donkey missing a second game in a row.
The game is named after him ffs, and he is the best character.

>donkey kong country
>only one game lets you play donkey kong
>introduce gay new characters
>muh difficult platformer levels
>muh water music is so goood

rare is overrated
>>
>>12130010
DKC is the best overall, DKC2 did good implementing interesting horizontal scrolling levels instead of everything being a hold right to win fest but DKC2 is bogged down by animal friend levels. DKC3 is a mess.
DKC-7.5/10
DKC2-6.5/10
DKC3-5/10

>The “gimmick stage bad” complaint is very overblown
How can you niggers call it a gimmick when it's using the game's main mechanics without interfering with them is beyond me.
Subhuman IQ really

>muh difficult platformer levels
only retros shitty dkcr series has difficult levels, the snes dkc series is easy unless you're moving too fast without being familiar with the levels
>>
>>12130206
>kiddy kong can skip on water
uhm.... WHAT
>>
>>12130432
yeah it's pretty weird and you only have to use it in one or two levels for bonuses too. they should've designed a level in krematoa around it.

you can also throw him at the wall and jump on him like the steel barrels in dkc1. dunno how useful that is but it's definitely interesting.
>>
>>12130432
It's a gimmick you can time jumps to bounce off the water surface. Doesn't feel well thought out.
>>
>>12130410
The SNES trilogy is pretty relaxed compared to contemporary platformers
Finding all the secrets is definitely difficult, but not due to mechanical skill involved
All 3 feature very fair checkpoints, kong barrels, and PLENTY of lives to the point where I regularly finish runs with 70+ lives
The only difficult animals are the elephant and the bird that hovers above you; every other animal is very powerful and has so many movement options, they feel like a treat to play as (especially the fucking spider just casually webbing over any conceivable level design)
>>
>>12130101
I hope it goes up to 3x a day
>>
>>12130017
I disagree, at least in regards to dkc1. Donkey Kong can make all the jumps diddy can without sacrificing his strength
>>
>>12130010
DKC1 is the only one I never completed, I didn't really feel like there was a point to it, since there isn't really a hidden world relates to it or anything like that. Also afaik it doesn't tell you if any level is completed like the other two games do. But I still liked it.
>I’d say 3 overall is my favorite. I really liked the overworld and the PNW theme.
Mah nigga. Depends on how I wake up if I prefer 2 or 3, but both are definitely an improvement over 1. I like the overworld and the bonus world and all that. Gives you a good reason to complete the game.

I do agree with the view that Kiddy should of been Donkey tho. Dunno why they went with Kiddy instead.
>>
>>12130010
>the momentum-platforming is so tight
The DKC games have no momentum, stop holding right while jumping and the character drops on the spot.

>The “gimmick stage bad” complaint is very overblown
It definitely isn't.
