What's the longest you've been stumped by a puzzle or a non-obvious solution to something in a retro game?
Took 7 years to get past this guy. The internet certainly helped.
Learning where to go in Silent Cartographer and 343 Guilty Spark. Not joking, both took me years as a kid to figure out (Halo was my only game). The backtracking confused the shit out of me.
Lion Kang (2 levels in particular) on the SNES stumped my 5 year old ass for a long time. Thankfully I only owned, never once rented. Can't think of any one specific puzzle.
>>12130267As a kid this part in the swamp palace had me stumped for a long ass time. There’s a room behind this waterfall you’re supposed to go into, but I had no fucking idea about it till I read a guide
>>12130267Twinrova in Oracles
I've never been stumped by a puzzle before, they're all too easy and unstimulating because I just clear them instantly without any effort which is why I play arena shooters
>>12130267In the Fire Temple, before, and en route to, the mini-boss, there's a room where a wall of fire chases after you as you move across suspended chain platforms. You're supposed to jump to and grab a ledge above one of the platforms, but it looks impossibly high compared to every other ledge you grab on to in the game. Me and my brother were stuck here for ages. We looked all over the temple for some route we were sure we were missing. Finally, out of pure frustration, all options exhausted multiple times, I took a leap at that too-high platform. Sure enough, it looked like I would faceplant against the wall and fall in the lava. But just as I was about to drop, Link magically teleports up about a foot or two and grabs on to the ledge.Man, fuck that bullshit.
>get 3 bars>ok i got the 3 lead bars>no you are supposed to turn them into gold bars90s graphics certainly didn't make this shit clear. This looks silver to me.
About 20 years. At the age of 8, I was hard-stuck in the third level of TMNT because I didn't understand the turtles would lose momentum if they hit their heads on the ceiling when jumping. There's one jump towards the end of the level that requires the player to not hit their head, and it's the only jump in the entire game that demands the player know this. I didn't notice as a child, and never got past it.Then around the time I hit 30 I suddenly remembered getting stuck there, and checked some guides and walkthroughs to see what I did wrong. After that I played through and beat the game without cheats or save states, and finally completed TMNT. On the flip-side, if I had figured it out as a kid, I probably would have gotten stuck in that one hallway in the Technodrome. I never would have figured out that one.
Never really been stumped but on first instinct my friends and I did not play the right song in oot water temple, use the item for the boss, or know to burn the curtains in majoras mask skeleton fight part. Links Awakening stumped me for knowing where something is or a few battles.Skill wise I don't think I've ever beaten the Donkey Kong 64 turtle race with Tiny in the Aztec area. Either I fall off or it gets ahead of me.
>>12130267I can't remember there's been so many times.Being stumped on a puzzle and totally missing the cue is such a weird feeling, like rubbing your brain tissue on rough stone. It's interesting how some puzzles can be obvious to certain people while others have no clue what is expected of them. Most of the time I think its better when I game primes up your pattern recognition skills before throwing a curve ball at youWhen that happens it feels really exciting, if its trial and error or moon logic I usually feel nothing. Some Lufia 2 puzzles feel inspired by Data Stuctures and algorithms I want more like that
>>12130298There's definitely a few Zelda puzzles feel like totally new object interactions like in ALTTP when you need to pull on the sewer grating to access a dungeon but also a lot of the time you just weren't reading enough. Basically skipped all the text as a kid and the game felt mysterious as fuck lol. I wish I could be that easily entertained again
Monkey Island 2. some of the puzzles took me weeks because I refused to look up solutions. I'd think about them in bed and have to get up at 4am to try out my eureka moment
>>12130295>TMNTThe NES one?
YearsDino CrisisFirst, that goddamn preradactyl that throws you into fan. I didn't know I could press all buttons to get out of the grip. Then my ass was scared of new dino's that appeared in underground facility (the retarded looking one) and closest I ever got was reaching Dr. KirkOnly recently did I manage to beat the game with no guides and actually appreciate it. Lovely game, and not for brainlets like Dino Crisis 2 was.
took me twenty years and a walkthrough to get past the cannon in neverhood.
>>12130305Can confirm I didn't read enough. As a group we all had roles, I was mostly regulated to the hard parts or boss battles. Friends liked reading the text with voices so I zoned out. Then I'd do something wrong and they would suggest something and I would try it. As an adult I usually get it all on my own. I wish I could play with my child brain again, games feel a bit too easy now
This is what a good thread looks like, and all it took was a relevant OP image

Usually when I get stumped I quit. It ruins adventure games for me.
>>12130343>someone just copy and pasted my postI don't know what to feel
>>12130282I have this problem with FPS games too, usually if they have a lot of dark corridors as well.

>>12130267Maybe that tree dungeon in Golden Sun, took me way too long to realize that you can drop down from the top through that hole in the center.
